For the Mac users among us, I have found Colloquy to be a lovely client. I used to use Chatzilla, but hated that I couldn't command+tab to a Firefox browser window. Colloquy is free, and applescriptable. Plus, if you are running iTunes while chatting type /music or /itunes.

While I can appreciate cellphone's offer to bring back #mefi, I don't know if it would be able to garner much interest due to the bad rap it got in the days of feeling like it was #mefi vs mefi, hence the establishment of #tapes, imo. Of course, this was before there were over 50k mefites, so, maybe there will be more interest than I would expect.
