It's not a bug, though, caddis. Just a situation.

It's more about the video than the dead kids. I understand the 4oo+ comments there. It actually helps assuage the pain to discuss it. Yet, right after that is one of the best posts in weeks, if not months, which appears to be just ignored. That's a bug, at least to me. It's not Matt's bug though.

What we need, obviously, is dead French kids.

The introduction of Favorite has led even more people to think they deserve a pat on the head for posting good stuff: expectation of reward is an ignoble and unimpressive thing to be motivated by, even if it is effective.

Let say it yet again, together: comment count is not correlated with post quality.

(In fact a negative correlation is closer to true.)

Different kinds of posts will generate different numbers of comments, with considerable case-by-case variation. There is no hmmmmm.

I watched the animation before I read heard about the VT killings, and I didn't think it was that great, frankly.

I don't get video on my internet; what's this all about?
posted by breezeway at 8:56 PM on April 16, 2007

Actually, yes. On planet Earth, 474 more people want to talk about 32 Murdered Human Beings at the Peak of their Lives (or 'dead kids' if you prefer) than the clever French-language movie.

HTH.

Hell, there would've been even more comments if there had been cats involved. Or dancing horses.

cortex, for your next mission into the soft underbelly of the Mefi beast you should compile a list of posts that have more favourites than comments. I imagine it would make a nice rainy day trawl.
posted by peacay at 9:29 PM on April 16, 2007

Heh. That might be interesting indeed.

And then I could reappropriate them all as one big amazing how-does-he-find-these-things post on my personal blog. With a little ebaums watermark and everything!

posts that have more favourites than comments

There's lots of those. Many of the best posts don't necessarily, um, need comments, or demand comments. That doesn't mean they're not good posts.

Anyway, that's what I want to believe...

I watched the video and really liked it. Didn't comment because there wasn't much for me to say 'cept, "I really liked it."

But perhaps that is enough.

I am magically sprinking a pixie dusting of extra letters 's' over this thread, for myself and anyone else who needs them.
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 10:43 PM on April 16, 2007 [1 favorite]

French video: 13 favorites.
Dead kids: 6 favorites.

...
Unless we count the MeTa thread as well, which pushes the dead kids up to 7. But what about this thread, which two people favorited? Better distribute them evenly. Therefore:

French video: 14 favorites.
Dead kids: 8 favorites.

Thanks caddis for making me aware of this - I spent too much time today reading comments about the shooting and concurrent debate about gun controls laws in the US, and missed this gem.

And on that subject - I agree with the idea of the US Constitution (something NZ lacks) - but disagree that the right to carry a firearm should be enshrined there.

(I mention it here as both metaf and metat threads are disjointed and hard to follow, let alone respond to).

You keep that progammer's filth in your head around here, Mister! I don't know nor care nor care to know how you do things in your house, but out here in the real. nonmetasyntactic world we practice rigorous mental hygiene and cleanliness! Yessir! You bet your sweet byte-bitten bippy! No intercaps, no contractomathics, no weirded verbing, no interfooferometry, no pole charts or Pascal's underpants or Sir Penske floams, no sir! Mental hygiene and cleanliness!

I think we could fix this with a big graphic on the front page of a finger pointing accusatorily at the user, with a list underneath of the posts that don't have enough comments. The finger goes away once you comment on them.

loquacious don't bring a TCP/IP-compatible stabbing machine to a gun fight, my friend.

Gosh, did I feel like a heel posting "hey, look at this little trifle!" right after the Virginia Tech thread. It was posted while I was messing around with the formatting of mine. I almost asked for it to be deleted - it suddenly just didn't seem like the right time & place.

I would like to complain that, at this time, 8 users have already marked the thread relating to the Virginia Tech tragedy "as a favorite".

It is simply disgusting that the slaughter of innocent people is considered by some MeFites as one of their "favourite" things.

I would like to call on Matt, or Matt's plenipotentiary extraordinaire jessamyn, or Matt and jessamyn's Chargé d'affaires cortex, to examine his/her/their computerised information management systems and the archived paper records concomitant thereto in order to uncover the usernames of these sick perverts and ban them from metafilter immediately.

I am sending you a "brown" paper package wrapped up in "string" as we speak, Mr Quidnuckle.

Wolof, you are the whiskers on my kittens, the raindrops on my roses, the apple in my crisp strudel.

When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad, I simply start a new metatalk thread - and then I don't feel so bad.

Or the people of Darfur.

I wish someone like Anna Nichole Smith would die, or Britney would shave her head again, so that we could get past this shooting. Where's Don Imus and his precious racist remarks to distract us from reality?
posted by Dave Faris at 9:37 AM on April 17, 2007

You know, if everyone were allowed to carry guns, the VT thing would never have gotten that bad, so it wouldn't have been big news, so fewer people would have commented in the thread, or it wouldn't have been a thread at all, and more people would have paid more attention to the French videos.

An armed society is a society more attuned to recent developments in experimental French cinema.
posted by googly at 9:49 AM on April 17, 2007

The VT shooting is no longer reality, it's Sensation, Spectacle and Tragedy. Sit back and watch the posturing, if you must pay attention; that thread made my eyes water and glaze over so fast I hit the [End] key, left this (which in hindsight might've been better placed here), and exited relieved.

I'll note here that in my very rapid and superficial perusal of that thread I noticed few usernames of Mefites I recognize and fewer that I have any respect for. Spectacle threads are great for bringing out stupid people.
posted by davy at 11:34 AM on April 17, 2007

Thanks davy, your dignified mien is an inspiration to us all. Feel free to exit relieved more often.

y2karl: Unless they are Iraqi nationals, that is.

True, true. But, to be fair, a lot of threads around here spontaneously turn into discussions about Iraq.

Yeah, because the name davy is synonymous with rationality, stability, and levelheadedness here on the Blue, Green, and Grey. How many e-mails have you gotten from admins this week?

Don't you have some tragedy to bemoan?

I actually didn't comment at all in that thread because I felt that anything I said would be trite and water-brained; you know, like most of your comments.
Way to belittle everyone who did participate, though.
posted by Alvy Ampersand at 4:49 AM on April 18, 2007

Well, I wanted to highlight that wonderful post, and despite the noise I think it worked. However, I have used my postings here for a week and there is an obvious troll post in AskMe and I can not call it out. What a shame. (no one is stupid enough to believe that 33 is too old to have kids, and if they are then it is)

I'm just chiming in to say I favourited Alvy's comment not because s/he got all up in Davy's grill, but simply because "Feel free to exit relieved more often" is one of my most favouritest turns of phrase of this whole week, and should be lauded as such. Carry on.
