DC meet-up May 4, 2007 12:58 PM   Subscribe

DC Meetup? Thinking last week of May, perhaps the Thursday night (May 24) before Memorial Day weekend? Also, how do people feel about meeting in the Capitol Hill area?

I'm new to DC, so socializing with strangers is definitely of interest to me.

Also ... not a King Diamond fan, but am willing to learn. King Missle and/or Crimson I could do certainly.

king diamond fanship not a requirement (at least for me)

anyway- i'll post a meetup on the DC meetup site and see where it goes...

I'd love to come, but as has been true of the last couple, I'm not sure the 24th will work. Although it also may work in a weird way. I'll follow the postings.

I'm pretty much always up for meetups, as long as they aren't on Wednesdays. Is there any interest in doing it on a weekend, and making it family-friendly?

Yeah, that's what I thought the AskMe question was leading to...
posted by grateful at 1:46 PM on May 4, 2007

Just so's you all know, I'm in my 30's, be-kidded, DC resident and I have a constant ringing in my ears from "music" played at quality venues such as the Franklin County (Tennessee) Skate-park. I'll also be lurking in this thread for further details.
posted by Pollomacho at 1:53 PM on May 4, 2007

OK, so family friendly. Hmmm. Too bad Eastern Market burned, we could have all gone there. But... how about Tortilla Coast at 400 1st St SE (between D St & North Carolina Ave)? We could do this early on Thursday, like 6, which would be dinner for the kids (they have an good kids menu and a very good menu for us older kids.
posted by parmanparman at 2:08 PM on May 4, 2007

In case anyone is confused, this MeTa post is connected in some way with this AskMe question.
Anyway I might make to a meetup, especially if it's in Capitol Hill since that substantially narrows my number of excuses.

And then we can go listen to my show on the radio!

How about a picnic? Saturday, May 19, Lincoln Park? Or down near the Tidal Basin, maybe at the paddle boat parking lot?
posted by MrMoonPie at 2:13 PM on May 4, 2007

I really like the idea of a weekend, family-friendly picnic-type meet-up; I also like the idea of a weeknight happy hour-type meet-up. Can we do both? The young, single, childless, DC-transplant-with-limited-opportunity-to-meet-similar-people in me isn't really digging the idea of a family-friendly weeknight happy hour meet-up.
posted by necessitas at 2:38 PM on May 4, 2007

Oooh, how about a potluck picnic? That would be fun.

Can we find babysitters for the people with kids for Thursday night?

I love the idea of a picnic, and the weekend of the 19th would be great for me.

I'd love to go, but can't do a school night in the city.
posted by cerebus19 at 4:38 PM on May 4, 2007

A Lincoln Park picnic on the 19th sounds fun to me, though I can't stay very late. I'm away on the 20th.

I won't be in town May 15-25, but would love to hear if there is a meetup planned for a time I'll be around. I looked at metafilter.meetup.com and didn't see anything posted. Is this thread where decisions are being made, or is there something elsewhere that I should know about?
posted by selfmedicating at 9:48 AM on May 5, 2007

This is the place to make the decision, selfmedicating, as far as I know. Does anyone use meetup.com anymore?

I'll all for Lincoln Park, of course, but I just realized that the complete lack of bathroom facilities may be a problem for some folks. My house is 1/3 mile away, so we could always traipse up there, I suppose. Thoughts from those with kids (or others with active bladders)?

Or down near the Tidal Basin

Go see The Awakening one last time before it is removed.

Have fun DC peeps!

BTW, I'll be in town in July and will be holding court at Atomic Billiards on Friday, July 20. Stay tuned for details, and get your tickets early.

MrMoonPie can kiss my ass and he won't get a shoutout if he doesn't make it ;)

They're removing The Awakening?! What? Please tell me more.

Here you go. There's a playground there--we'll set up amongst the trees behind it. Bring your kids, bring your dogs, bring something to share, bring something discrete to put your booze in.
posted by MrMoonPie at 7:01 AM on May 7, 2007

Cool, I'll be there.
LobsterMitten: here's an article on the move of The Awakening.

The temporary permit for The Awakening has been expired for over 20 years. But I agree I hope it can find a home in the new plans for the area.
posted by terrapin at 12:59 PM on May 7, 2007

permit shmermit. It's one of the best things in DC - such an unexpected but well-done oddment in a usually pretty staid town. It's a good reason to go down to Hain's Point; it's evidence that the park service has a sense of humor; it's something they should keep. And they're going to replace it with another monument? Oy.
posted by LobsterMitten at 1:33 PM on May 7, 2007

booze and metro, please?

:)
posted by whitneykitty at 7:17 PM on May 7, 2007

WTF?!!! The Awakening is going?!! -cry- -wail- -whimper-

:/

But yeah. I'd like a meetup--I'm only 22 (no kids) but it feels plenty old sometimes. Weekend, metro accessible, and mild preference for no booze... otherwise I'm not picky.
posted by anaelith at 9:01 PM on May 7, 2007

Lincoln Park is a 1/2 mile, pleasant walk from the Eastern Market metro. Though it is officially a non-booze venue, there's pretty much no supervision of any sort, so as long as we use opaque cups, no one will be the wiser. I plan to bring multiple bottles of various homebrewed wines. There's a corner store at the west end of the park with a well-stocked beer and wine selection, as well as snack foods and sometimes even decent bread.

parmanparman, I see you favorited the suggestion for the picnic on the 19th. Care to make it official on the sidebar?

Anyone have a croquet or bocce set? That could be fun--the first annual MeFiDC invitational croquet tournament!

I also took the liberty of submitting the meetup to the sidebar.

As a follow-up, if there are people who want to go out drinking after the picnic, there are two great places on H Street NE and 12th and the Rock and Roll Hotel further down H.

We will talk after the picnic and see if a follow-up is a potential opportunity.

How about we find some place to lock up our children where they can form their own quasi-Lord of the Flies type society for a couple hours while we get hammered?
posted by Pollomacho at 10:38 AM on May 9, 2007

Agreed!
posted by and hosted from Uranus at 10:42 AM on May 9, 2007

I fully intend to get (at least a little) hammered at the picnic. I'll have the LittleMissMoonPie in tow, but we'll be within walking distance of Chez MoonPie.

There is a Nationals game at RFK that night. Be aware that you can't park to the east of 13th street (which runs along the eastern side of the park) after 7pm. This shouldn't be a problem, of course, but I thought I'd mention it.

I was thinking of pimping a snack. But I also have a hernia in my tummy, so I will bring my own lunch.
posted by parmanparman at 12:45 PM on May 10, 2007

I've always wanted to try deep-fried pickles, but I prefer my processed cucumbers to . . . well, not taste like fruity drinks.

I will be bringing something, though not sure what just yet.
posted by necessitas at 3:23 PM on May 10, 2007

So is the plan for everybody to bring their own lunch and optionally a dish for sharing, or is it more of a full-scale pot luck? If the latter, how many people should we prep for? (I'd kind of assumed the former.)

posted by anotherpanacea at 7:29 PM on May 12, 2007

I think and hosted from Uranus has it--bring your own, and something maybe to share. We'll have pickles, damnit, we'll freakin' have the pickles, and you are all expected to try some.
posted by MrMoonPie at 9:08 PM on May 12, 2007

So what flavor koolaid did you use?
posted by necessitas at 9:26 PM on May 12, 2007

I may come for the pickles.
posted by phrontist at 10:20 PM on May 13, 2007

I am also going to try to bring some people with a frisbee. I am thinking of going to the new farmer's market on H street NE and getting some bread and cheese and some cold cuts for people.

But who is going to bring the shout-out boards?
posted by parmanparman at 5:26 AM on May 14, 2007

I'd like to be clear that I have no kids and will bring no kids and I have no partner and will bring no partner, but I'm happy to play with other's. In case, y'know, it's supposed to just be family friendly.
posted by OmieWise at 6:23 AM on May 14, 2007

I used fruit punch koolaid, necessitas. It seemd to be the best match for the "Red" flavor prescribed in the recipes. The pickles are getting really nasty looking. Yum.

My plan is to bring sidewalk chalk for shoutouts. Seems to be appropriate.
posted by MrMoonPie at 7:26 AM on May 14, 2007

Sidewalk chalk is a fantastic idea.

Fruit punch pickles . . . just seems so wrong. I think my contribution will be some pickle flavored sports drink, just to restore the balance.
posted by necessitas at 7:53 PM on May 14, 2007

This seems like a good idea. I have no idea what I'll bring, but I have some time to figure it out, assuming I actually remember there's a meetup this time :p ... (22, m, no kids, no partner)

I want very badly to join you all. The wife and I have another commitment that begins at 12, however - that commitment doesn't really have an end time, so we might be able to hang out for an hour or so. I would really like to make a DC meetup, and this one sounds particularly enjoyable.

The wife has given this plan her initial approval, so it might work out - it depends on the schedule of the other picnic we're going to.

I'm in the red shirt, parmanparman in the dark blue, anotherpanacea with the necktie (with partner and friend, not sure if they have accounts here). OmieWise is in one shot but happens to be facing away from the camera. There were also some kids who must have been away frolicking somewhere. And I just realized I forgot to bring the bocce set - doh!

necktie?

I think there were some pickle-action photos taken... maybe by parmanparman?

This was a pretty low-key event... it was really very nice to realize that mefites are cool in real life, too. Still, I think we should go bar hopping and start a brawl with some Hill staffers. "No! You're an antisemite!"
posted by anotherpanacea at 11:23 AM on May 22, 2007

No necktie? My bad, it looked that way in the photos. Goes to show I would think nothing of wearing a tie to a picnic, I guess.
