It's probably about time to start planning the 10th anniversary for metafilter. It goes without saying that there should be a meet-up involved somehow. But where should it be?

May I suggest either simultaneous meet ups in many locals, or cascading meetups in different timezones with the goal of having an entire day where someone, somewhere is meeting up.

Let's see if the world survives through 1/20/09 first.

Otherwise we'd have wasted all that planning time when we could have been drinking instead.

So, yeah. Cairo.

This was going to my suggestion.

And it's not too early, we need at least one nominally dry run to work out the bugs. And to give time for all of us in remote areas to get at least one local member signed up.

No. Not at all. After all, 22-years in advance ("Hello") Newman booked his millennium party.
"Cancel! (jumps to feet) Think again, longshanks! I started planning this in 1978. I put a deposit down on that revolving restaurant that overlooks Times Square, and I booked Christopher Cross....starting in the year 2000. For me, the next millennium must be, Jerry-free!"

Based on the current listing on the MeFi sidebar, I suspect that somebody wishes us to redirect ourorganization efforts to July 14th of THIS YEAR, and I enthusiastically concur. The round-numbered anniversaries often turn out in real life to NOT be the best times for celebrating. From my own real life experience, they have more often been the worst.

So let's put together something multi-site and fully-networked for this July 14th, which will be a Saturday, the day of the 7th leg of the Tour de France and the Alice Springs Camel Cup, so only professional bicycle and camel racers will be excused from attending.

And if you absolutely must, we can always call it METAFILTER'S 10 ANNIVERSARY: BASE 8.

I think we should piggyback on the Sturgis rally. Just think how great those meetup photos will be! DaShiv's lens will fog over from all the bare biker-babe bosoms. Matt can ride in on a recumbent Harley.

I've always wanted to go to the Black Hills, anyway.

We can get a big mobile kitchen and have a MeFi chili cookoff while we're there. We can eat fried mountain oysters and do body shots of tequila under the blue blue sky.

Plus we're bound to recruit some tougher dudes for Metafilter. Trust me, as the MeFi demographic ages, and when we're all buying our mid-life crisis Harleys, we'll be glad we've got a few Hell's Angels reading AskMe.

Some of you think I am joking. You, sirs, are sadly mistaken.
