NYC Meetup May 17, 2007 3:50 AM   Subscribe

NYC meetup? I'll be in New York between 5 and 12 June, so let's have a meetup. Best days for me are 5, 6 and 7th. I'm staying at the Gershwin Hotel on E.27th Street. One of those dates will be a theatre night, but I don't know yet which one.

You should totally have the meet-up on the roof terrace of the Gershwin, essexjan, assuming they let non-guests use it.

You know I'll be there, eeeej.

Wow, I have meetup fatigue. For a while it seemed they were few and far between, but now I feel like I'm dancing and dancing as fast as I can, popping dolls and stumbling to keep up. Whose hand is that? I'm thirsty. Am I on next? AM I STILL PRETTY??

Oh wait, that's like over 3 weeks away. Yeah, I'm in.

ThePinkSuperhero has the market cornered on ideal venue selection, I've heard.

we could always use Manitoba's again. worked out swimmingly last time.
posted by jonmc at 7:05 AM on May 17, 2007

I think we should start the night somewhere quiet where we can all sit down, and perhaps move to Manitoba's at a later point; it's a little too loud to be a good first-stop. I think we should do Tuesday the 6th at Revival.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 7:18 AM on May 17, 2007 [1 favorite]

Sure, Afroblanco, I'll just bring the one I use for... Oops. I've said too much already.

Despite an excellent jukebox, I thought Manitoba's was pretty loud for civilized conversation, honestly. Some usernames don't lend themselves to being pronounced out loud, let alone shouted.

I just want to go somewhere where I don't have to scream (or be screamed at). I realize the latter might require some behavior modification on my part.
posted by hermitosis at 7:21 AM on May 17, 2007

Much as I want to go (and feel like a total loser for missing the last one), I can't do it if it's not on a Friday or Saturday. I'll keep tabs on the thread and see where you all end up.

I'll leave it up to the Noo Yawkers to tell me where and when to show up, being it's my first time in the city.

I would love to meet ej and finally make it to an NYC meetup, but I very much doubt that I'll be able to make it on a weeknight. Boo.

I loved Manitoba's but PinkSuperhero is probably right about the volume.

I also vote for a Friday or Saturday. And I'm so trying to get my husband to some (in which case I would vote for Saturday night, as he has to work Saturdays).

I can't make the weekend, but I'm going to be seeing essexjan earlier in the week no matter because WHAT because I loooooove her, so it's your call, essexjan.

By the sounds of it, essexjan prefers Tues/Wed/Thurs, so we should probably go with that.

Any night is good for me.
posted by gaspode at 9:25 AM on May 17, 2007

I have plans for Friday and Saturday so Tues/Wed/Thurs are best. If you can pick a day that suits most people, then I'll know when not to get the theatre tickets.

And yes, food is good, brujita. Food is always good. And I'm told NYC food is especially good.

CRAP! The other one was too early. This one's too late.

If anyone else will be in NYC for Book Expo America (MeFibrarians, I'm looking in your general direction), can we have a mini-meetup? Maybe, like, breakfast?
posted by Alt F4 at 12:50 PM on May 17, 2007

I just looked at Katz's menu. Yes! I've wanted to try an 'egg cream' since reading about one in an Ed McBain story 30 years ago.
posted by essexjan at 1:13 PM on May 17, 2007

Ok... how about we meet up at Revival on Tuesday the 5th around 7 p.m., and then after an hour or two head over to Katz's? Tuesday night is a work night for most of us, so we probably won't/shouldn't party too late....

This city has a lot of places to hang out besides Manitoba's and Katz's. Tens of thousands, in fact.

There, I said it.

I may make it out there, but that day is my graduation (yay!) and while the ceremony will most definitely be done by then, I'm not sure what my parents will want to do afterwards.

I always end up going to chain places when going out with New Yorkers. It's depressing, because I don't have to go to NY to go to Outback.

It would actually be nice if we found a place that was generally agreed on to be good for us and made it Our place for a while. Then we could negotiate a little with the management and maybe get some regular drink specials or other favorable treatment out of it, and they'd be glad for the business, as opposed to always having to gamble whether an establishment will be happy to see us (showing up unannounced with two dozen of our closed friends trickling in and out over the span of a few hours doesn't win a lot of friends in the hospitality profession, and it sure didn't curry us any favor at Temple!)

Revival, for example, seems to have worked well on its non-packed nights and is a pretty easy place to get to from almost anywhere. There's a lot to be said for taking MetaFilter on the road and meeting up in different neighborhoods all the time, but it's also sort of a pain in the ass. And if we establish a regular venue, people will stop waiting for us to come to them and will finally have to just decide we're worth the trip (WE ARE!).

I dunno, just an idea; most of us live here and are perfectly capable of broadening our own horizons bar-wise in our free time, we don't come to meetups expecting new delights and attractions like tourists, we just want a beer and a cocktail and a great gab with some witty internet weirdos, and maybe a sandwich after.

Along those lines, my recommendation for that is the Cutting Room on 24th between Sixth and Broadway. It's pretty centrally located, they serve decent enough bar food, is not terribly loud, it has a serviceable jukebox, and if you get there early enough (6pm during the week), it's pretty easy to stake out one of the four corners of the bar where they have couches and tables set up for groups.
posted by psmealey at 7:33 AM on May 21, 2007

Yea, hermitosis is right- it's not about where we go, it's about US, because we rock. This is a meetup for one of the sweetest, greatest Mefites to ever grace us with her presence, and she's coming over the fucking ocean, so I'd rather go with an old reliable that we know will be good then risk it with a new place. We can try new places when it's just us regulars.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 7:40 AM on May 21, 2007 [1 favorite]

Maybe a few more places should be auditioned before settling on one. I'd still like to get everybody's read on Dakota Roadhouse, jason's_planet and grouse where there recently and agreed it had real potential.

My concern with Cutting Room is that often people are really there to see the shows, once the tables facing the stage are commandeered people may be clustered here and there blocking other peoples sight-lines, or in the waiting areas with people lined up actively waiting for a show.

Definately some thought should be put into avoiding places that are unlikey to work out, like Temple Bar.
posted by StickyCarpet at 2:17 PM on May 21, 2007

I really liked the Water Taxi Beach when I went there--but I think it will be nicer for essexjan to experience Katz's with fellow mefites rather than on her own.

At the London meetup I attended, sueinnyc called the pub beforehand to set aside a few tables.
posted by brujita at 3:15 PM on May 21, 2007

I went and saw a cool burlesque show at the Cutting Room with some friends; it's a cool place, but if there's a show there, it might be even less conducive to a meetup than that dark expensive place over by Bleecker we started at when the Reverend was in town. But, like I said, I'm'a be late anyway, gotta go home to LIC after work and get outta my monkey suit, so anywhere's fine.

I liked that place we went for the CD party. And they gave us that extra room. Although maybe that was because one of us worked there, or something.
posted by bingo at 8:14 PM on May 21, 2007

Yea, I think we had the room because of the CD party. Without that, there's nowhere to sit.

I vote for revival - it's easy to get to and, above all, easy for essexjan to get to. plus the odds of it being busy on a tuesday night after work are low and all of us can cram ourselves up there.
posted by Stynxno at 8:26 AM on May 22, 2007

Not pushing for anything this time around, but for easy-to-get-to have a closer look at that DK I linked above. It's pretty much on all subways, express stop. Not just the eastside ones. (One more or less express stop than Revival on the 4-5-6.) Also close to Path train.

posted by milarepa at 8:47 PM on May 23, 2007

There are places like Dakota Roadhouse all over the US--I'm sure there's one near where essexjan's friends in Ohio live. Katz's is unique to New York.

And yes, there are Jewish-style delis all over North America..this place is a law unto itself.

Katz's is unique to New York.

I'd love to go to Katz's, but if the meetup isn't there, I'll go there another day, I have several days to explore NYC. So tell me where to go for the meetup, and what time to be there, and I'll show up bearing Cadbury's Flakes.

Actually, the Magician would be closer to Katz's....but like Revival, it doesn't serve food. I think it would be best this time to just go to a place that did.

There was a meetup at Veselka several years ago.
posted by brujita at 2:32 PM on May 24, 2007

Restaurants are inferior to bars for meetups in that there's no come and go. That's why it's best to start at a bar for awhile while people congregate, and then go to a restaurant when everyone who wants to eat is ready.

So Magicican, then Katz's?

Sadly I have band practice Tuesday night and I probably shouldn't skip it because it's the last one before our shows on Thursday and Friday. Sorry to have missed you, essexjan. Enjoy the visit!
posted by safetyfork at 2:02 PM on June 3, 2007

For what it's worth, I think it would make a lot more sense to just start at Katz's. 7:00 is dinner time. Drinking at dinnertime and then going out to eat at 9:30 on a weeknight is wacky. We should go somewhere that has both food and drink, and stay there.
posted by bingo at 5:28 PM on June 3, 2007

I have kung fu class till 9, so I'll see you guys at Katz around 9:30 or so.
posted by hermitosis at 10:01 PM on June 3, 2007

Bingo, that's what I said a few weeks ago...Katz's is partly self-service and serves beer, so people can come and go as they please. I'm going to be a bit late, as I have another engagement....though I am looking forward to meeting essexjan (given that we share a birthday).
posted by brujita at 10:49 PM on June 3, 2007

Actually, it makes sense to me. People like coming to meetups whether they only have 20 minutes or 2 hours to kill, which makes bars ideal. Restaurants hate hate hate big nebulous parties that spontaneously double or halve in size, with folks lingering for hours. That was the primary problem at Temple last time; we don't know how many we'll be or for how long, and we want to belly-laugh and take pictures. Meeting at a bar guarantees a good visit for those at all commitment-levels, and then for those who are clearly there to make a night of it, the venue-shift functions as a sort of bonus round for the die-hards.

Besides, while I'm looking forward to eating at Katz, it's not at all the kind of place I would ever want to sit and hang out indefinitely for a whole meetup. It's a deli, by definition it's bustling, smells like cabbage, and has harsh overhead lighting. I'm looking forward to a good nosh, but I won't be inclined to camp out or anything.

In other words, I doubt I'd want to spend that amount of time in practically any eating establishment that would actually tolerate our presence.
posted by hermitosis at 5:50 AM on June 4, 2007

I've always thought moving from place to place is fun, which is probably why we do it at almost every meetup, it seems. I imagine if we went to Katz's first, after most people were done eating, they'd want to go somewhere else. At least this way people know where everyone will be.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 6:05 AM on June 4, 2007 [1 favorite]

Beyond the coming and going problems, restuarants are bad because you are inevitably going to be making someone unhappy. If it were at Katz's I wouldn't come because I think Eastern European food is one of the most repulsive cuisines known to humanity, and I am not going to show up and watch people eat. But everyone can find a drink they want at the bar, and not go to the restaurant after. Also, if you are going to be hungry at 7, eat before.
posted by dame at 6:39 AM on June 4, 2007

I'm only mentioning this for the serendipity of it all, but I note that another large website has a meetup at the same time, on the same date, a few blocks away. I suspect treachery.
