Meetup in Victoria, BC? August 15, 2007 2:29 PM   Subscribe

I'm traveling to Victoria, BC (thanks to this thread). Are there enough MeFites in Victoria for a meetup? August 29 or 30, held somewhere a clueless tourist could find.

(partial hijack) I'm getting married on one of the Southern Gulf Islands in late October. Anyone going to be in Victoria around then? I might be able to sneak off for a few drinks.

I live right in downtown Victoria, close (nay, within!) the touristy area. Even if there is no meetup, I'm free in the evening on Wednesday or Thursday (29 or 30). This would be really, really cool.

ODiV, where are you getting married?

Corpse, are you coming with kids (I checked out your Flickr photos)?

I'm in Victoria (also right in downtown) but sadly, will be out of town that week. Perhaps another time for the locals....

My spouse and I are up for a meetup. Enthusiastic, even. KokuRyu, where do you suggest? We're just out of Victoria, so something downtown would be great unless everyone wants to come out to Sooke.

Sooke, eh? Perhaps we should do a Sooke meetup as well. Whiffen Spit, anyone?

I'm going to defer to corpse and others in terms of what kind of place to meet. It would be cool if it was someplace child friendly (that does not smell of french fries and piss), but I'm up for a meeting, period!

I was at the 17 Mile House this evening. It was a bit chilly out back on the deck.

er...that was in reference to the Sooke comments. Have a great meet-up (and visit to Victoria Corpse) and if post again if anybody wants to do it again in the fall.

I'm around the Victoria area (Langford representing!) and available any of these times, including later in the fall.

KokuRyu -- nope, I'm kid-free this trip. Wahoo!

KokuRyu -- nope, I'm kid-free this trip (wahoo!). Will you have kids with you at the meetup?

Two wahoos' worth, that's how excited I am.

We like to have the little guy around, but we shall see what kind of place this meetup will take place in.

So, what kind of place shall it be? Big Bad John's is kind of a fun watering hole. Swan's has nice beer and nice artwork. The Canoe Club is also pretty sweet. Guru is a neat Korean food place. The Irish Times pub is also popular. The James Bay Inn pub is pretty low-key....

Those all sound good, and look like they're all easy to get to from my hotel. Little guys are fine with me. I like beer, I'm curious about Korean food, I don't mind the smell of french fries but don't like the smell of piss. I'd like a place where we don't have to shout to be heard, but other than that... alltomorrowsparties? dness2?

I'm open minded but usually drift towards quieter more talk-friendly establishments. Some of those places will be crazy this time of year. I have no problem with kid-friendly.

Being a rustic, I have very little knowledge of Victoria's restaurant scene and no real input on location, but would definitely prefer somewhere where conversation was easily accomplished without shouting. Oh, and yes piss smells are definitely not cool, but kids are fine.

Okay, baby KokuRyu (he turns five soon) will be coming. Being a parent, I don't really know restaurant all that well (besides the obvious ones I listed above).

Corpse, you shall be a guest in this town. What do you want to do?
posted by KokuRyu at 1:56 PM on August 17, 2007

Just to complicate things: have any of you been to Red Fish Blue Fish? It sounds like they have some tasty food, and perhaps baby KokuRyu would enjoy the french fries (if he's like my almost-five-year-old). I can't figure out if there's anywhere to sit, though.

Just an fyi - Red Fish Blue Fish is a fish n' chips place that just opened. It's run out of a shipping container (and it looks pretty cool). It's really on a wharf - unless they set up a few tables outside, I doubt they have seating.

(And, if I wasn't out of town, I'd push for the Bent Mast (512 Simcoe St), which has okay food and a cool atmosphere, is within about a 15 minute walk of the Inner Harbour, has good beer, great fries, and isn't too noisy).

That sounds great, Staggering Jack. I propose this: the Bent Mask, Thursday, August 30. What time's good?
posted by The corpse in the library at 7:37 AM on August 18, 2007

Sometime after 6 so I can find parking
posted by dness2 at 7:43 AM on August 18, 2007

I propose the Bent Mast, Thursday, August 30, at 6:30, for a beer or two. Is that late enough to find parking and early enough for KokuRyu, Jr?
posted by The corpse in the library at 10:17 AM on August 18, 2007

Sounds fine!

This sounds great. I recently moved to James Bay and have always wanted to check this place out.

Great! It's sidebarred.

Please don't come here. We hate tourists.
posted by carfilhiot at 5:37 PM on August 23, 2007

True, but with this meetup you are now a Metafiltourist and that makes it ok. The cabal said so.

I've lived in touristy spots all my life. Free-floating hatred of tourists will make me feel right at home.
posted by The corpse in the library at 9:55 AM on August 24, 2007

OK, the semi-official meetup sign has been printed. I'll bring it along and try to look obvious.
posted by The corpse in the library at 2:51 PM on August 26, 2007

Cool. I'll try to make it, also not looking too obvious.
