chrismear in New York! Monday, October 8th. Head inside to plan!

Posting on behalf of Chris, since he beat me to the Boston/Waltham post.

My guess is that unless Chris specifies a neighborhood that is not union square or proposes a place, the meetup will be at Revival.

We are creatures of habit. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing.

I just came here to see the head inside. Where's the head? Where?

I suggested Hi-Fi over on Mecha.I don't think it will be that crowded, given that it will be a Monday night.

There is nothing wrong with Revival in and of itself, but I am getting bored with it.

A place with a piano that allows their guests to play would be good too, but I can't think of anything offhand.

I spoke to chrismear last night about this; I think Sunday the 7th might be a little better for a meetup. I know gaspode is only available Sunday, and Sunday is better for me, too.

I agree with brujita; let's have a change of venue. And then let's have a pre-designated backup/after-hours alternative that is not Manitoba's.

Can we have dinner first and then go to a lounge?
posted by spec80 at 2:34 PM on September 30, 2007

Thanks for posting this, Eideteker!

Confusingly, when I spoke to gaspode she expressed a preference for Monday rather than Sunday. CONFUSIONLOL. There is also the possibility of the MeFi Documentary Film Crew™ dropping in if we do it on the 8th.

I am easy about venues, what with being NYC-clueless and all.

Discuss amongst yourselves. I am honoured.

Oh really? I thought gaspode wanted Sunday, for some reason. My mistake!

I'd suggested the Gingerman in one of the DaShiv threads; the three bars in the Ulysses group also serve food---I've been to Puck Fair and Swift, but not Ulysses. Swift will be too small, but Puck Fair and from what I've heard of Ulysses won't be.

Spec80, I'd first thought about a teatime meetup at the Hudson Jacques Torres, but it closes at 7.

What sorts of things were you looking forward to eating in NYC, chrismear? We can plan a meetup around that.
posted by brujita at 3:38 PM on September 30, 2007

IT won't be.

So many meetups in New York. Just open a MetaFilter bar already. You can charge $5 for a cover.
posted by baphomet at 5:23 PM on September 30, 2007

Now that's an idea!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 5:33 PM on September 30, 2007 [1 favorite]

If someone opened up a MetaBar, there would be a thread on MetaTalk toute suite about the crappiness of the location. :)

I think I used toute suite wrong.
posted by spec80 at 5:35 PM on September 30, 2007

Also: How about we go to Joe's Shanghai in Chinatown for soup dumplings and then Chinatown Ice Cream Factory and then a lounge? Ah, you can tell at which part of the evening I will be retiring to my apartment. Heh.
posted by spec80 at 5:37 PM on September 30, 2007

I think it would not be hard to get a bar in NY to set-aside a weekly night for metafilter meetups where you can control the music, drink specials, etc.
posted by empath at 5:54 PM on September 30, 2007

I think we should go naked. I of course will be there from tomorrow in the event of anyone getting the date wrong.
posted by oxford blue at 6:32 PM on September 30, 2007

I think I'll be there.
posted by jewishbuddha at 8:25 PM on September 30, 2007

That's a good idea, spec80, but I'd like chrismear's input on food (he's a Sino-Brit)--this is something which might also be available in London.
posted by brujita at 10:48 PM on September 30, 2007

I hope to be there.

Spec80, it's Toute de suite; you used it correctly, though.
posted by breezeway at 8:34 AM on October 1, 2007

Oopsie, I mean tout, no "e."
posted by breezeway at 8:36 AM on October 1, 2007

Sunday or Monday? Which is it now?
Sadly, chances I won't make it only go from 100% to 97% if it's on Monday instead of Sunday.
posted by safetyfork at 10:57 AM on October 1, 2007

Thinking of showing up for the lounge part. Is there a decision on where its going to be?

On a side note, is there a reason not to have more meetups on weekdays? I'm usually doing stuff on the weekends, but not weekdays, so I'm free to hang for a couple of hours after work.

I think some people probably have a similar schedule. Your thoughts New Yorkers?

What sorts of things were you looking forward to eating in NYC, chrismear?

I hadn't given that too much thought, to be honest! spec80's Chinatown extravaganza sounds like it would make a fun meetup, though. Where shall we lounge?

Let's stick with Monday 8th for the sake of simplicity.

How about Happy Ending (former massage parlor)?
posted by brujita at 5:41 AM on October 2, 2007

why isn't this in the meetup list?

ok I'm going to call it.

Whoppe! Not sure if I can make it, but I'll see what I can do....

In the excitement of planning and seeing that no one was making anything definite, I forgot that I have class on Monday nights. So I won't be attending. I'm a doof. Have fun, guys!

That itinerary is pure genius, notwithstanding its obvious flaw for spec80.
posted by jewishbuddha at 4:15 PM on October 2, 2007

Sounds wonderful. I will try my damndest to be there.
posted by piratebowling at 5:52 PM on October 2, 2007

Yeaaaaaah. Hi. I forgot that at my last class my teacher told me that the school would be closed for Columbus Day. And I rescheduled the class for Tuesday. So I can make it. That makes me a double doof.

Don't judge me based on this thread. In fact, nobody mentions this again.

spec, you're my faaaaavorite.
posted by piratebowling at 7:51 PM on October 2, 2007

Don't feel bad, spec80- I thought Columbus Day was the 15th. I almost came in this thread to tell you as much.

On the upside, I think this ups my chances of attending.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 7:58 PM on October 2, 2007 [1 favorite]

Man...you students with you fancy classes, and schools and your Columbus Days off...and...and your youth =(

One caveat about Happy Ending: the host is snotty about outside food--so no doggie bags.
posted by brujita at 10:19 PM on October 2, 2007

spec80: My father thought I was two years older then I actually am today... I can't believe i'm going to have to put him in a home already...

As per what chrismear said before, the MeFi Documentary Film Crew™ will be there to film all the naughty bits. Details to follow.

Aww thanks guys. I'm gonna miss the memory of you when the Alzheimer's kicks in.

brujita: I plan eating any leftover soup dumplings and everyone else's unfinished ice cream.

I've got to get off kkokkodalk's lawn now.

I forgot the word "alzheimer's". I had to google it. Nice.

i could make the last stage of this meetup, as i will be working in the area that night. Room for a noob? Is there a password or something ?
posted by vrakatar at 7:54 PM on October 3, 2007

Plenty of room.....you'll recognize us from past meetup pics.
posted by brujita at 11:02 PM on October 3, 2007

No password, but you have to pay a $50 meetup fee. Payable by cash, Paypal, or a check made out to "ThePinkSuperhero".

I have a class scheduled from 8-10 on Monday night. No-one has mentioned any Columbus day cancellation.

I will try to drop by the Happy Ending later on that night.
posted by jason's_planet at 8:26 AM on October 4, 2007

I'll be coming back from a long weekend away and will probably be too tired or too late, but that Happy Ending place looks intriguing as hell.

Fifty bucks??!!?? Do you realize how much overpriced vodka i could buy with that? jeezlouise.

Believe me, I do realize.

Pinky, I could promise to drink $50 worth of booze, I do hope that would suffice. This would be the first meetup I had foreknowledge of, and I look forward to it.
posted by Busithoth at 10:54 PM on October 4, 2007

I suppose that will have to do.

I came to this late, thinking "chrismear" was some sort of underground/back-alley portmanteau holiday between xmas (clearly indicated by "chri(s)") and some other holiday suggested by "(s)mear" but left unstated. This is good too. I've never seen a mefite in person.

i'll try for Happy Ending too--that was where my first meetup ever was, ages ago.

As I'm a leftcoaster and nowhere near NYC, can someone tell chrismear that he's just damn hot, in person.

uh-oh, the yankees managed to win a game last night...this dilutes my odds of beig there.

Asherah, he gets that all the time from his London harem!
Can someone tell my sweetie since his phone is not receiving there, that one of his business clients is trying to contact him?

Oh and show him a great time guys, he's actually very shy in person. ;)

I'm so sorry guys! I forgot to add in the itinerary:

10:06PM Jell-O Fight for Chrismear's attention while Chrismear sits on a throne - middle of NYC Chinatown

I'm bringing the the inflatable swimming pool, TPS is bringing the Jell-O and can someone bring an air mattress pump? Thx.

What? Jello wrestling? Weak. Dude, for maximum internet guys appeal I have a modest proposal: girls bikinis and cat ears vying for chrismear's attention by Halo tournament whilst riding an iRide. Place all bets/sign ups with me, thank you very much.

Yowza! You don't want him to stroke out now, do you?

(Actually forget I said that, the pictorial value of that last image will be burned on the Mefite retinas forEVAR!)

Go for it NYC! The London Mefites are watching you, do us proud!

Man, I'm glad I checked up on this thread. Spec80, I got you covered for the pump, no worries. (It's permanently in my purse now, after that embarrassing mix up at the last meetup!)

Yeah, I was amazed they believed us when we said the meetup was over, and all started yawning in unison. Suckers.

Guys, I'm not going to be able to make it after all (after the debate about which day I could make it -- gah!)

Have a great time. chrismear is supercool.

In case anyone can check this IRT, he got the message about the business contact and has just finished the job. He's coming down from W 94th now so it will take him X??amount of time to get to Canal.

Thanks for showing me a good time, NYC MeFites! The dumplings and the ice cream were delicious. As were the women. And my Guinness Foam-Party-in-a-Glass was challenging. Just like the men.

Sorry I couldn't make it. I had an audition to portray a transvestite playing chess with a midget in a short film.

God I wish I was making that up. It might be time once again to rethink my priorities.
