Austin Meetup! October 18, 2007 5:58 AM Subscribe
Hey, Austin, I wasn't kidding. I'll be in town for the weekend, we should do a thing. Say, Saturday night?
I'm in. The Gingerman is fine with me (and it'll be good if you're looking for a bit of the Downtown Austin Experience), or we could try the Dog & Duck if anyone objects to the Gingerman.

Okay, so I can't look at their website right now, but I bet it has information!

Gingerman, dog and duck, Fados, are pub like bars downtown.
Most everyone moves about a lot when they come out in Austin. There are basically three areas downtown to go bar hopping:
1) Six street - college crowd 21-25
2) Warehouse district - 25 & up
3) West six - slightly younger than warehouse district
all are within walking distance of each other
These have been some popular destinations lately:
Qua - warehouse district, opened a couple of weeks ago.
you should heck this out just to see the shark-tank dance floor. Lots of money went into this bar.
Belmont - (warehouse) large indoor/outdoor bar
J Blacks - (West 6th)
Union park - (west 6th) late night 25-35 crowd ends up here
Cedar street - older crowd, but usually has a very popular 80s cover band on Saturday nights.
Lucky Lounge - picks up late night.

Yeah, 8 or 9 sounds good to me. Do we have a decision on a place? It's probably been 15 years since I've been to Austin, so I have no idea what any of these places are like.

I'll be there during the day, but I'm still checking to see if I'll be able to stay overnight. The idea of driving back to Houston after drinks does not appeal.

How about we meet at 8:30 at the Gingerman? If we decide we'd rather watch people dance on top of sharks or what-have-you, we can always go somewhere else.

Okay, can anyone familiar with the area point me towards a hotel near the Gingerman?

I've never been to a meetup before. Do we all just walk around yelling "Metafilter? Metafilter?" until we find each other?

Or casually saunter up to people with a mushroom and ask them to identify it?

The few meetups I've been to, it's been very obvious who the MeFites are. Considering the Sox eked out a win last night, in the unlikely case that there's a television in The Ginger Man showing game 6, I and a non-MeFite co-worker may be in front of it, watching.

Okay then- 8:30, look for the obvious MeFite watching the game?

Sounds good. I'll very likely be wearing a black shirt and jeans, but no guarantee. Also, If you're going to the Maker Faire, I'll be at a table at one end of the Maker Store with naught but a laptop and an iPhone.
