Top of the Blue looking strange. October 18, 2007 9:12 PM   Subscribe

Is the header on the blue looking strange to anyone else? On mine, the "New Post," "My Profile," "Preferences," "Recent Activity" and "Favorites" links are all smooshed together underneath the search box (not the tabbed links, just the text links). I'm viewing the site in IE, WinXP, and I just noticed the smooshed links within the last hour.

Pretty sure this is last minute CSS-adjusting for some new features mathowie and pb are working on (the MeFiMail thing mentioned a few threads down). Does it look broken or just a little off? And are you using the simple stylesheet or the old bluegreen one?

No, not "broken," just "a little off" (the links I mentioned are all smooshed together, but the rest of the page looks normal)...

And are you using the simple stylesheet or the old bluegreen one?

I don't know. *feels like a dummy* I'm using whatever is the default way to view the site.

oh sorry, don't feel dumb. I guess an easier way to ask is "is the main page blue for you, or white?"

There is a simple stylesheet you can choose to use on your profile page that makes all the parts of the site a more basic dark grey text on a white background instead of the different colors for the different sections [green for askme, blue for mefi, etc] sometimes something is fixed in one version and not another.

Can you post a screenshot of win/IE's view of the main mefi page?

My main page is the basic blue.

And, just wanted to say, this isn't anything that's driving me insane or hindering my Metafilter enjoyment. I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing it.

Can you post a screenshot of win/IE's view of the main mefi page?

Will do. Hang on...

Here's my screenshot.

I think that just happens when your window isn't wide enough. That's how it looks on my work machine (Windows, IE) when I have the window smaller than normal. Can you en-widen it? (Yes, that's a word. I said so.)

Heh, that was my first reaction - so I played around with my own window size. the squished together looks decidedly different from amyms' screenshot, The Deej.

I just tried this out in IE6 on XP and I only get that squished layout when I pull the window down to less than 850px wide or so. At wider values, it looks fine for me.

Hmmm... My screen width is the same as it's always been and I haven't tinkered with any settings. I'll do a restart in the morning and see if it straightens itself out. Thanks for the responses.

P.S. It's not smooshing on the green or the grey, just the blue, so I don't think it's my screen width, but I will try a restart in the morning just in case.

I'm getting it too, also just on the blue. I'm using XP and IE6. I view Metafilter at maximum width but my screen resolution is 800 x 600 (don't laugh). Problem goes away at higher resolution. I don't visit the Blue everyday but it certainly wasn't like that before now.

in cold fusion when you change the email handling, your header links squish. i thought everyone knew.

A restart didn't help, so I decided to try changing my screen resolution to 1024 x 768. That cleared up the problem, but the thing is, it never was a problem before last night. Like boudicca, I also normally view Metafilter at a screen resolution of 800 x 600, and the link-smooshing never happened until last night. Like I said before, I'm not exceptionally bothered by it, but I am curious as to why it suddenly happened.

I changed one or two things in the stylesheet, namely I made the search box 10px wider. I guess at 800x600, that's enough to break the layout. I'll change it back.

I think it's fixed now.

Actually, the blue is looking funny in FF now.

Thanks mathowie. In the midst of all this, I've discovered that I really like the 1024 x 768 screen resolution, so I'm not going back to 800 x 600, but hopefully your tweaks will help others who had the same problem :)
