Conversational IQ test in Austin?

So, who wants to meetup to watch that show about that thing next week? If you don't want to click, that's Dec 12th.

Also: Where, exactly?

sorry if that conflicts with your ron paul meetup.

This meetup will never take off.

probably not.

I'm lazy and don't want to see this die just yet, so instead of looking it up for myself I'll ask, when on Dec. 12 is the show on?
posted by tepidmonkey at 8:59 PM on December 6, 2007

So it looks like it's at 8PM.
posted by Pants! at 9:10 PM on December 6, 2007

If you can get the venue changed to somewhere in Kabul I'm totally there.

You used my jokey little comment in your phrasing, so I'm obligated to be there in spirit.

Last time I agreed to come to one of these I got slammed for work the day before it was scheduled. Wound up missing half of Maker Faire to do some silly spinal surgeon show. So instead of saying I am available, I will make others aware of my interest in an Austin meetup.
posted by Faux Real at 12:32 AM on December 7, 2007

At the Maker Faire meetup, I was the only Austinite; the two other people there were from out of town. Those two were awesome, but I was disappointed at the lack of Austin representation. Leave your houses, people! It's not even cold out!

I'm game for a Mythbusters-watching meetup, but I don't know what sort of place has a TV and is willing to let us watch the Discovery Channel. How does the etiquette work wrt what gets watched at bars? Are we going to piss off some sports fans? Will they beat us up? Tune in at 9 / 8 central!

Seriously, I have no idea where we'd do this. Anyone have ideas?

How does the etiquette work wrt what gets watched at bars?

It goes something like this:

You: There is a documentary on the Discovery Channel network this evening on the question of whether a plane can take off from a giant conveyor belt and the scientific principles thereby demonstrated. Now this starts at 8:00 and goes on for approximately three-quarters of an hour.
Barkeep: I'm sorry, are you talking to me?
You: Indeed I am. Yes, now, is it possible for me to reserve the Discovery Channel for the duration of this televisual feast?
Barkeep: Why don't you talk properly?

While I can't make this, I'm interested in Austin meetups.

What he said.

You mean you can.. leave the internet? There's another world out there with something more than porn and conspiracy theories? I find the implication of such a "meetup" rather hard to acknowledge.

Shame this title wasn't more descriptive. We could have gotten into the argument again. I missed the last one because I was on vacation, and I haven't had my fill this month of being called a Barcalounger pilot. :)

I'm REALLY looking forward to this show; watching that plane fly will be highly entertaining. :)

I have to leave for a bit, but I bet the Jackalope would play this. More speculation later.
posted by fiercecupcake at 9:15 AM on December 8, 2007

So as I was saying -- the Jackalope plays a lot of Discovery and History channel stuff on one TV, and they keep the closed captioning on. If our group does not consist of a high percentage of douchebags, and we drink well and tip well, this could be a good location.

[Disclaimer: We are regular 'Lopers.]

Do you know them well enough to confirm, or shall I give them a ring?

Y'all got room for a vacationing Okie at this shindig?
posted by ormondsacker at 1:07 PM on December 8, 2007

Sounds like fun! I'll come out.
posted by donajo at 1:31 PM on December 8, 2007

Yes - the more the merrier. Once we nail down a location I'll mefimail everyone and update the thread.
posted by Pants! at 6:56 PM on December 8, 2007

I'll show up if I can get to it by bus, so anywhere around campus or downtown preferred.
posted by lychee at 11:14 PM on December 9, 2007

Okay, it seems like they don't answer the phone at Jackalope, so let's assume, based on our Jackalope regular's expertise, that we can use a TV.
posted by Pants! at 5:06 PM on December 11, 2007

I had figured this meetup to be a bust, so now I can't stay too long, but I can still go. What time should we meet there? 7:30? The show starts at 8, right?
posted by bluishorange at 9:05 PM on December 11, 2007

Cool - I'll try to make it!
posted by freshwater_pr0n at 9:43 PM on December 11, 2007

Ooh, also, it's buy-one-get-one-free burger night at Jackalope, and they have awesome burgers. So come hungry, if you're so inclined. (But order as soon as you get there, 'cause they're slow.) And the waffle fries are gooood.
posted by fiercecupcake at 9:52 AM on December 12, 2007

Now I am getting really nervous about the TV situation. They aren't a place where "the game" is always on or anything, but there's nothing big going on tonight, is there?
posted by fiercecupcake at 9:52 AM on December 12, 2007

They do have a lot of TVs, though. And now I will stop all this ridiculous posting nonsense.
posted by fiercecupcake at 9:59 AM on December 12, 2007

If you tip most any Bartender 20 bucks they will let you watch whatever you want.

I asked my bartender and he said "20 bucks"

Please let this happen.
posted by Faux Real at 11:42 AM on December 12, 2007

Can't go. Bummerfuckerola.

I suppose this is going to count as an Austin meetup, and so there won't be another one for another 20 years, hey?
posted by dirtdirt at 12:43 PM on December 12, 2007

I was planning to organize one in January.

Damn you asavage. WHERE WAS THE CONVEYER BELT?
posted by Pants! at 9:12 PM on December 12, 2007

It is official; there is no cabal in Austin.

But at least I have my fists.

Fun time all, hope to repeat soon.

Thanks, bluishorange!

I had so much fun. :] Maybe too much, from the way my head hurts this morning. So... tired...

It looks like it is now supposed to air on Jan 30. I feel like Lucy pulled the football away.
posted by Pants! at 4:14 PM on December 13, 2007

You know what that means...
