let's meet up January 5, 2008 10:43 AM   Subscribe

We've so much to discuss! [Minneapolis/Twin Cities]

We haven't really gotten to talk (at least since the last meetup in november 2006). With the bridge, the upcoming RNC, and the weather I'd think we could find something cool to talk about....

So, fellow Minneapolitans, or Twin Citians, lets get together. Perhaps sometime in late January, with a location and date to be debated?

Oh, and I understand if Astro Zombie AND Astro Zombie 2 can't both show up at the same time. I know they don't mix well...
posted by localhuman at 10:48 AM on January 5, 2008

Dude. The "users nearest me" is something that exists for logged in users only. Putting it outside the login wall is sort of uncool. It's possible you didn't know this. Now you do. I edited your post to take out the huge dump of usernames and to give people an idea where on earth you were talking about. Hope that's okay!
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 10:56 AM on January 5, 2008

Thanks a bunch Jessamyn and languagehat. Not that I have a choice, but I'm definitely cool with the edits.
posted by localhuman at 11:01 AM on January 5, 2008

If I show up, and I may, I will probably also do some impromptu editing.
posted by Astro Zombie at 11:21 AM on January 5, 2008 [1 favorite]

Well, if we're going to have an editing meetup, I'll have to fly out. We can hand out printouts of the givewell thread and see who can catch more typos!
posted by languagehat at 12:37 PM on January 5, 2008

I'm really more of a content editor than a line editor. I'm a big picture man, Languagehat.
posted by Astro Zombie at 12:45 PM on January 5, 2008

We can put together a non-profit fund to pay for your flight, LH. There is a lot of editing that is needed here. And though Astro Zombie cleans up each day, there's always work left un-done.

I'm not sure if it will pass GiveWell's rigorous standards, but I'm sure a few un-assuming mefites might fall for it.

If you had just had this criticism-fest over New Year's, I would've joined you. Booo.

I live in Mankato and might be game for the weekend, though I know next to nothing about the TC...and I might need someplace to crash as the idea of driving 1.5 hours intoxicated on 169 does not appeal to the inner sanity.
posted by jmd82 at 1:09 PM on January 5, 2008

I think it's a great idea. I'm not too far from "The Cities" (far enough, though, to be able to get away with calling M/SP "The Cities".)
posted by wafaa at 1:22 PM on January 5, 2008

Any editor should read the silly but enjoyable Poe squib "X-ing a Paragrab":
The leading article, I must admit, was brilliant -- not to say severe. It was especially bitter about things in general -- and as for the editor of 'The Gazette,' he was torn all to pieces in particular. Some of Bullethead's remarks were really so fiery that I have always, since that time, been forced to look upon John Smith, who is still alive, in the light of a salamander. I cannot pretend to give all the 'Tea-Pot's' paragraphs verbatim, but one of them runs thus:

'Oh, yes! -- Oh, we perceive! Oh, no doubt! The editor over the way is a genius -- O, my! Oh, goodness, gracious! -- what is this world coming to? Oh, tempora! Oh, Moses!'
I love "Oh, tempora! Oh, Moses!"

driving 1.5 hours intoxicated on 169

"169" could be a new street name for crank, you know.

Count me in!

Where would we be meeting up?

does anyone feel the Kitty Cat Klub on January 25th? I like couches and beer, but any other suggestions would be cool.

posted by wafaa at 2:15 PM on January 5, 2008

Heck yeah. We might consider MeFi mailing the other Minnesotans to let them know in case they don't read MetaTalk. Or would that be bad form?
posted by Demogorgon at 2:44 PM on January 5, 2008

Seriously, Dinkytown would be perfect for me--close enough to mooch off my children.
posted by wafaa at 2:45 PM on January 5, 2008

I was going to suggest y'all MeFi mail me but I forgot. Maybe that's a good thing?
posted by wafaa at 2:47 PM on January 5, 2008

Dinkytown = really annoying parking. If it didn't have such a tendency to get noisy, the Gasthof would be great.
posted by gimonca at 3:15 PM on January 5, 2008

I'm game as always. KKC in Dinkytown sounds all right to me. I'll bring my aide Melinda with.
posted by wheelieman at 3:44 PM on January 5, 2008

If Dinkytown is out, how about the ol standby Britts Pub?
posted by wheelieman at 3:47 PM on January 5, 2008

I'd be interested in attending, and in being notified via mefimail of final plans. Kitty Kat Club and Brits both sound like good ideas to me.
posted by gauchodaspampas at 5:05 PM on January 5, 2008

something out of parking.... Could we get together at 26th and Nicollet at Azia, or Bad Waitress? Parking should be okay there. Perhaps 8pm on the 25th, 26th, 27th ?
posted by localhuman at 5:14 PM on January 5, 2008

I'll only go if Astro Zombie goes.

I vote Kitty Cat Klub!
posted by Zosia Blue at 5:19 PM on January 5, 2008

Well, I'm only going if Zosia is there.
posted by Astro Zombie at 6:13 PM on January 5, 2008

If you're thinking 26th and Nicollet, there's also Jasmine 26. One of the nice things about that area is there are a lot of options. The other nice thing is it's very close to me.

Grumpy's Downtown is another thought, but it might be kind of packed on a weekend.
posted by louche mustachio at 6:40 PM on January 5, 2008

I love 26th and Nicollet, but I'd really down for a Kitty Cat Klub meetup- It's so comfortable there! but that's just my opinion...
posted by localhuman at 8:07 PM on January 5, 2008

Let me toss my vote in for Kitty as well.

Sweet. I'll be there, I think. Not that I know any of you, or the KKC (I live under a rock in St. Paul most of the time). Closer to the date you'll have to let us know how to find the group.

Holy crap I live close enough to other MeFites to go to a meetup now?

I might be able to make it if my wife doesn't think it would make me too much of a geek.

Might even wear my Metafilter shirt. (Of course it's kind of an aqua teal color and would CLEARLY mark me as a geek, so maybe not.)

Ok, i think I deciphered what the mighty One has spoken. My computer (called a Mercury, made by these guys.) Its part communication device, part PC with Windows XP, CD DVD Drive, awesome speakers, a touchscreen (currently broken because I used windex on it) and voice output (also broken at the moment.) It mounts right onto my wheelchair and it works well with everything I do. I have to send it in to Massachusetts *bleah* to get it fixed and insurance is a bitch. Nuff said.

Enough said? No, sir Wheelieman. You forgot the part where your chauffeur is extremely hot.

posted by wheelieman at 2:12 PM on January 26, 2008

Mathowie's comment earlier probably made it obvious, but for those who missed it, you can see the photos that I took last night here.

A great time as always, I really enjoyed the conversations that I had. I apologize to the lovely young lady who made the mistake of asking a drunken rez about cameras, I'm sure that I went on and on way beyond any point of interest to anyone other than myself (and perhaps neckro, who only encourages my inebriated rantings).

I may need some help identifying individuals. Anyone who could send me a mail with names linking to images, I'd be eternally grateful!
posted by rez at 8:24 PM on January 28, 2008

I'm sorry I FAIL. Really. I can't wait to make it to the next (hopefully soon!) meetup.

I was there for 45 minutes (I came 30 mins early for some reason), and didn't see anyone with a sign. I was supposed to make a sign, but after a really stressful week it kind of slipped my mind.

I do have some deals with social anxiety and such, and being alone at a bar waiting for people to show up and say to me "hey, you from metafilter?" was stressful. I definitely wasn't going to ask anyone that myself - despite the fact that I had ORGANIZED the damn thing!!

By the time 8:15 arrived I was so flustered that I probably walked right past the mefi table upon my exit. I also neglected to remember that I had left my check-card at the bar (I just picked that up this evening!)

I really do regret being there and yet missing it, I was looking forward to the meet-up so much. But I'm also really glad that so many people seemed to have a great time. Thanks for the cool pictures- perhaps that means twin cities should meet up more often!

Hopefullly, by then I'll have grown a bit-
posted by localhuman at 9:16 PM on January 28, 2008

Hey dont feel bad, I did the exact same thing at a meetup I organized (and where you only showed up ironically enough) So we both did the same thing. Dont feel bad. If anybody needs to grow up, its me.
