Mefi movie night in SF. Anybody interested?

Not that we could ever agree on a movie, but I hear the sparkling drinks are just dandy. So what the Hell.

Might be an excellent use of my place. Anyone have a projector?

Ooh, The Lumiere is showing Blade Runner: The Final Cut!

This could be preceded by drinks at Lush Lounge and or dinner at Cordon Bleu.

I guess what we have to decide first is a date.
posted by miss lynnster at 10:18 PM on January 7, 2008

miss lynnster, maybe you should pick 2 or 3 movies, and people could vote on those few.

Totally the wrong town I'm sure, but Paris Blues with a Duke Ellington score, Louis Armstrong , Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier is playing February 6 at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!!

What kind of movie?

I vote for "There Will Be Blood" wait I can't even go. *sigh* I live in the sticks.

There's also the noir film festival at the Castro:

THU JAN 31 San Francisco Noir!
7:10P D.O.A.
d. Rudolph Mate, United Artists, 1950, 83 min.

Is it the greatest noir premise of all-time? Edmond O’Brien plays a man given a slow-acting poison who has only hours to figure out who has killed him, and why. Ernest Laszlo’s inventive camerawork gives viewers a breathless tour of noir-era San Francisco before zooming to Los Angeles for the nail-biting climax. A terrific supporting cast brings to life an insanely inspired script by Russell Rouse and Clarence Greene.

Yeah, I'd come. And/or I'd go to PFA, oneirodynia - I'm in the East Bay.

Oh right, a date! Can I vote against the 12th and against the 3-day weekend? In fact, how about a nice Monday night?
posted by salvia at 10:43 PM on January 7, 2008

OMG! January 17th, rifftrax (mst3k guys Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy) will be doing Plan 9 from Outer Space live at the Castro as part of SketchFest!!!

If that's not a perfect MeFilm I don't know what is!!!
posted by jasper411 at 10:46 PM on January 7, 2008

And I'd second either of vacapinta's movie suggestions. Here's the entire schedule for the Noir Film Festival.
posted by salvia at 10:46 PM on January 7, 2008

I've been to double features at that festival before at another theater. I love film noir! Yeah, that sounds fun to me.

But so does the Berkeley thing so maybe we need TWO movie nights. :)

Ooo! Nthing San Francisco Noir and Blade Runner!

They all sound like fun. There's no way I can reliably make it anywhere on a weeknight before 8 or so, but I could meet up afterwards if anyone's still game.
posted by tangerine at 2:13 AM on January 8, 2008

I like late nights any night. If people can handle the randomness here I can hook up 5.1 surround and really large speakers. I also can reserve a projector for about $20 or so.

I'm less inclined to going to theaters 'cause I usually hate the sound at theaters (too loud, over-driven, blown out) and the outside world irritates me a lot.

I could provide room for about 20-30 folk.

Awwwww pooopy. Of all the times I wished I lived in SF!

Maybe this will drag us out of our inability to go to movies. I don't know why we can't seem to get our asses to movies, but we can't. We did manage to see Charlie Willson's War over the holidays, and I swear, that was the first movie we'd been to in months and months. Stupid. Not the movie - it was great.

Anyway, yeah, we'd likely be up for it, depending somewhat on the film. I'll say yes to Blade Runner or the Noir fest, though.

(hey - don't y'all forget about the Jan 26 birding/nature photography meetup at Crissy Field!)

The Kabuki now serves alcohol, by the way.

Rifftrax sounds fun, too, though I think those have sold out in advance.
posted by Pronoiac at 9:14 AM on January 8, 2008

There still seem to be tickets available now for the Rifftrax/MST3K show but anyone who's going should probably buy sooner rather than later.
posted by jasper411 at 9:38 AM on January 8, 2008

You all could always slum over to the east bay and we could hit up one of the speakeasies over here and combine food/beer with movies.

Failing that all of the above ideas sound good, maybe we'll see you guys.

I'm in. Already saw the revamped Blade Runner, but the Film Noir Fest is always a blast. (Although it was kind of cooler when it was out in the outer Richmond, because you'd walk outside afterwards and everything would be all foggy and full of shadowy figures - the Castro's a great theater but Castro and Market just isn't as gritty.) We could go for drinks afterwards to accommodate latecomers and facilitate conversation.

Or, I am a big fan of loquacious's batcave, though it's a bit harder to get to sans car. I'm totally willing to put something in the kitty towards a projector rental.
posted by whir at 11:23 AM on January 8, 2008

Okay, this makes me happy. Because when I lived in LA I used to go to 1-2 movies a week and always had people who wanted to go. But none of my friends here like movies or tv, so I haven't been to the theater in about 6 months 'cuz I got tired of going by myself. BUT I totally miss movie nights! So I'm actually open for a LOT of these ideas because they sound right up my alley.

And as for the talking thing, that's what drinks after the movies are for. :)
posted by miss lynnster at 11:43 AM on January 8, 2008

I'd love to hit the movies, but the only time that's likely to work for me would be the weekend.

That said, conditionally, I'm in. I've got a hankerin' for a movie nite.

Hooray for drinks after movies!

I work weeknights and Sunday night (matinee anyone?) but I'll check back to see if MeFilm night ends up being on a Saturday. Thanks for the tips about the film noir festival!
posted by PY at 1:03 PM on January 8, 2008

I have access to a projector, if you decide to go that route. I've been itching to see the Blade Runner final cut, but it's playing at the Parkway in Oakland this month, and that's my favorite theater, so I'll probably go see it there, with or without y'all.
posted by team lowkey at 1:23 PM on January 8, 2008

Okay, so far we have a January 17th suggestion, a January 31st suggestion, late nights and Saturdays seemingly preferred otherwise. And an option of movies at loquacious' loft with team lowkey bringing a projector (and someone else getting film?).

Today's January 8. To appease the Bladerunner crowd, anybody want to see that on Saturday?
posted by miss lynnster at 1:33 PM on January 8, 2008

Can't do 17th or 31st, but I'd be interested in seeing Blade Runner this Saturday. 9pm at the Parkway (Oakland), or 6:45 pm at the Opera Plaza (San Francisco)?

I could be in for BladeRunner this weekend, and thw 17th was riffttrax, which looks to be a tough get, right? Also, it's a thursday. Friday that 18th? contraption and I are looking for a fun weekend that weekend for our 6th anniversary. I was thinking skiing, but we like the city, too.

Somebody mentioned the PFA -- well, see you there on the 19th for "Stolen Kisses"!!
posted by Rash at 3:48 PM on January 8, 2008

Tickets for the rifftrax thing are available online at $30 each (including TicketMaster usury). That might be a little rich for my blood, personally. I can't do Saturday the 12th myself but most other days will work for me.
posted by whir at 4:12 PM on January 8, 2008

Expialidocious: I'd love to see Bladerunner this saturday. The Opera Plaza is close to my house, but I like the Parkway too, so either one's good by me.

But that doesn't mean I don't want to see another movie later!
posted by aubilenon at 7:32 PM on January 8, 2008

I'm possibly up for a weekend, except the 26th (got a date with some birds then. I'll check back in later to see what plans are firming up.

Miss L, I have the same problem. No one wants to go to the movies with me, and I got really tired of always going alone. I'm in, especially if it's anything from Noir City and/or the PFA.
posted by doubtful_guest at 9:45 AM on January 9, 2008

I was able to buy 2 tickets to the MST3K thing for $25, not $30 each. I went through the RiffTrax site. Anyways, I'll be there. And possibly Blade Runner in Oakland. Woot, movie fun!
posted by iamkimiam at 10:34 AM on January 9, 2008

Okay, how's this idea... anyone who wants to be on the "movie list," MeMail me your e-mail address. I'll put together a list. Then I'll figure out the calendar of all of the options here and maybe we can do an evite thing to keep track of who wants to go instead of having it all be back & forth in MeTa.

Does that sound like a good idea?
posted by miss lynnster at 10:59 AM on January 9, 2008

I also got tickets to the MST3K thing, so I'll be there with Mrs Jasper411 and our daughter (Ms Jasper411?). Maybe any of us who go to that can do a mini meet-up, or at least stand in line to pick up the will call tickets together!
posted by jasper411 at 12:03 PM on January 9, 2008

Evite nitpick: The address is for Opera Plaza, where Blade Runner is playing Saturday. Not the Lumiere.

I shall be coming to Blade Runner.

I'll be there! How are all of you not going absolutely nuts to see a LIVE version of MST3K doing Plan 9 From Outer Space?!?!?! I know I'm not going to sleep tonight.
posted by iamkimiam at 6:55 PM on January 16, 2008

I have a prior commitment on Thursday (to see a documentary about voting machines, evidently in an attempt to out-nerd even the rifftrax crowd). I think we still need to decide on a movie for the Noir Fest, too.

By the way, I had a really nice time hanging out and getting to know you guys better last weekend at Blade Runner and thereafter. Just thinkin' aboutcha.
posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 10:05 AM on January 17, 2008

I don't know what y'all were thinkin'. You should've been there!

MST3K guys doing Plan 9 at the Castro Theater last night was AWESSSSOME!!! I haven't laughed that hard, nonstop, in ages.

jasper411 was there with his lovely family, and was able to snag us seats while we waited in The Line That Would Not Move (thanks again and again for saving those seats)! Eventually we met up and all very much enjoyed being in the perfect place to witness two hours of utter hilarity.

Since this was a Mini Metafilter Meetup, I snapped the bare minimum of pictures, which can be seen here.
