Chapel Hill/ Durham meet-up? January 25, 2008 5:51 AM   Subscribe

Chapel Hill//Durham meetup?

I'm aware that several of us (myself included) missed the last one of these. Anyone interested in giving it another go? Though I'm on the Chapel Hill side of things, I'd be willing to locate this in Durham, if that would be more convenient for people.

I just moved to Durham a couple of weeks ago. I'd be interested.

I'd enjoy one in Chapel Hill!

I was sorry I missed the last one; if anyone wants to carpool from Raleigh, I'm down.
posted by mediareport at 8:03 AM on January 25, 2008

Depending on date/time I could make the trip down from Hampton Roads to be pointed and laughed at.

All sounds good so far. Regardless of what point of the Triangle this occurs, this should probably happen at a time and place where we will not be overshadowed by a basketball game. It is that time of the season, after all. Any of you guys have a bar preference? Some of my favorites tend to get kinda smoky.
posted by thivaia at 9:03 AM on January 25, 2008

I'm not too up on the current bar scene, which is either admirable or sad, depending on how you look at it. That said, I love beer. Mmmmm. Beer.

Tyler's? (Either location)

I live in Durham, work in Raleigh, and would not at all mind going to CH.

I keep meaning to actually make it to a meet-up. Durham Tyler's is really superior to Carrboro Tyler's (just as our Elmo's is better than their Elmo's). Dane's Place on 9th St is non-smoking and quite awesome.

Dain's is an EXCELLENT suggestion. I can walk there. :-)
posted by Stewriffic at 11:05 AM on January 25, 2008

I'm in Raleigh, and would go to this if possible.

So true, so sad. :( ... Dain's then? When? I'm game.

Also, we should totally make them a new website. The current one is hideous.

In Raleigh, but Durham or Chapel Hill aren't a problem. When/Where?
posted by alikins at 1:42 PM on January 25, 2008

Depending on dates, I could be up for this and for giving rides from Raleigh. I really don't have many dates available, so I'd rather see what you folks decide and see if I can make it work.

Next week/weekend-ish? I can pretty much be free any night but Thursday.
posted by thivaia at 6:25 PM on January 25, 2008

Fuse is in Chapel Hill and there is food/beer/wine/liquor as well as late-evening smoking. Seeing as how this is the tobacco state and I like to smoke from time to time, how about an 8 o'clock meeting there? Still early enough to eat, late enough to drink, and the stragglers can smoke when it turns 10:00. It's on Rosemary St. Walking distance to many other locations if we need a scene change. I think this is where the last meet-up was, although I had to miss it because I was out of town. I'd really prefer Chapel Hill. Anyone else?
posted by greta simone at 6:28 PM on January 25, 2008

I'd be in, depending on the night.
posted by EarBucket at 9:42 AM on January 26, 2008

I am so there. Wherever it is, but of course, I would prefer it to be CH or Carrboro. Why is Tyler's in Durham so much better? Greta Simone, I like your idea. Any day of the week. Please just tell me, I will be there.

How's this Wednesday (Jan. 30th) at Fuse? 8ish?
posted by thivaia at 3:21 PM on January 26, 2008

I am SO THERE.
posted by msali at 3:25 PM on January 26, 2008

I could be at Fuse about 10PM on the 30th, willing to give a rides from Raleigh. I'm usually booked up Mon to Thurs until about 9 PM.

Wednesday? We're shooting for a Wednesday? Seems kind of mid-week for this sort of thing, doesn't it?

(I'm busy Wednesday nights, is what I'm saying.)
posted by mediareport at 8:20 PM on January 26, 2008

Friday or Saturday better for me, I could get there earlier.

ditto what mediareport said

Call me crazy, but weekends are better, earlier is better.

Hell, I'll do Wednesday and a weekend meetup as well. Just tell me where to go and when. I'll probably be the first one there.
posted by msali at 7:05 AM on January 27, 2008

Okay, then, how about Friday, either the 1st or the 8th of February at Fuse? If eight o'clock is too late, we would do it earlier.
posted by thivaia at 9:35 AM on January 27, 2008

Tyler's in Durham is better because Durham is better. Also it has 100 different beers on tap and the one in Carrboro only has 20 something. And weekends are better because grad students are still at work on weekday nights.
posted by hydropsyche at 10:19 AM on January 27, 2008

hydropsyche - you have twice said that Durham is better. The Chamber of Commerce's check is in the mail to you, okay?
posted by pinky at 11:49 AM on January 27, 2008

Heh. Ms. Pinky? I have to say I agree with hydropsyche. :-) Hope you still love me!

I'm free either the 1st or the 8th and I'd *much* prefer a weekend.
posted by Stewriffic at 11:52 AM on January 27, 2008

I'm in Chapel Hill, but I'd happily go to Durham. I won't be able to make it the weekend of the 1st. If ya'll aren't in a rush, can we do the 8th?
posted by solipsophistocracy at 12:07 PM on January 27, 2008

yeah, all you Durham boosters work overtime, but I love living where I live, so there :-)
posted by pinky at 12:48 PM on January 27, 2008

I'm good with the 1st or the 8th. And I have a slight preference for Durham, but having lived in actual big cities before, I don't consider a 30 minute drive to an event any kind of a problem. (100 different beers sounds good, too, although my strictly enforced personal limit is 15 at one setting.)
posted by Pater Aletheias at 1:31 PM on January 27, 2008

I vote for the 8th. Wherever. I'm new to the area, so try not to make it in such a cool place that I can't find it.
posted by rachelpapers at 3:06 PM on January 27, 2008

I'll be at Fuse, in Chapel Hill, on the 8th of February, at about eight, if anyone else is up for it. Obviously, a topic of conversation could be Durham vs. Chapel Hill ( I have stronger opinions on the whole Carrboro vs. Hillsborough issue, as it happens), and I'll stay out of the Tyler's debate (I'm not a big fan of Tyler's in general. Though I do--slightly--prefer the Carrboro location of Elmo's. Judge me heathen as you will. )

If people would like to schedule a secondary Durham meet-up (either before or after), this would also be cool. I don't want anyone to feel left out or overburdened with getting somewhere. I just wanted to get together for drinks.

Until then, I eagerly await the outspoken Raleigh residents to start weighing in.

I'll see you at Fuse, thivaia. Hope to see you Durhamites there.

BTW, is Fuse what used to be Henry's, back in the day?
posted by Stewriffic at 3:44 PM on January 27, 2008

8th is good with me. I'll try to make CH, unless someone plans a Durham one and if I don't chicken out first.

I'm from Cary, so I'm willing to drive if there are others from that area interested in carpooling.
posted by artifarce at 3:58 PM on January 27, 2008

I'll try to get there. For other folks from Durham who might be transportation limited, the Robertson bus will get us there.
posted by hydropsyche at 6:38 AM on January 28, 2008

Friday the 8th works for me, and Fuse sounds great, too. I work until 8 that night, but if anyone from Raleigh wants to leave then, let me know.

I'll be there, too, unless I have to go out of town for work. And I've never been to Fuse, even though I've ridden my bike past it a gazillion times, so it'll be a whole new adventure!

Damn, I can't make that night. F*ckity, f*ck, f*ck. I had fun at the one meetup I went to, and would love to go to another. Keep me posted if you try a Durham or Carrboro one. Poop.

I'll be there. I think I might have agreed to pick up a shift that night, so if that's the case, I probably can't make it until 10:30 or so. Will folks still be around at that hour?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'll still be there.

(I have a haircut appointment tomorrow morning, early, though, so I'm not going to be too wild and crazy. Also, I invited a couple of friends.)

Jenny (and your friends), Ali, John, Will (and your old roommate who skipped out early)-- GREAT MEETUP! It was so great to meet you all and I hope we can get together again soon! I'm looking forward to the pictures!

OK, here we go with the photos! Too bad the batteries ran out so quickly.

Did any of the non CH-Carrboro peeps make out after I left? I was sad to be the only Durham representative. And nobody from Raleigh!

Argh!

Oh well, that just means more for later.

Thanks for the pictures, Stewriffic. It was really great to meet y'all, and we have to do it all again soon. Stewriffic, you make a compelling case for a Durham meetup. I think we should do it there next time. Maybe then we can finish our conversation about whether or not Galego constitutes a distinct language or a Portuguese dialect! I'm still leaning towards dialect, but I would love to have your insight and superior learning on the subject. I was sad you left so early. Thanks for bringing Garrett and Jinsook, they were really cool people.
Greta Simone and Thivaia, I will probably stroll up your street later on today, I will be on the lookout for you two.

Y'all are beautiful. I'm sorry I couldn't make it this time but glad you had fun!
posted by mediareport at 8:16 PM on February 10, 2008

Sorry I missed it, ya'll look like a damn fine bunch. I stayed home that night and asked my girlfriend to marry me (she said yes!). I guess it could have been interesting (even historic?) to propose at a meetup, but things seemed to have worked out fine with the simple "on my knee at the couch" approach.
