Tokyo meetup soonish? February 5, 2008 5:15 AM   Subscribe

Time for another Tokyo meetup?

I was thinking it might be a good idea to suggest one before I become too large to move around.

Last time it was discussed briefly about maybe doing something during the day instead of at night, although it may be a bit early for picnics there are lots of other things to do.

Ideas? Dates? Yays? Nays?

Ueee~ T0T I wanna hang out with gomi tooooo T-T. I say "yay," but I'm in New York...-_-;

Yays! Next weekend would be awesome!

Something that doesn't run till late-at-night is preferable because my train turns into a pumpkin earlier than everyone else's (11ish. I'm not going to repeat the $100 cab ride I did Sunday...)

Yay from me, too! But only soft drinks for you, gomichild!(^_^)/

I can't do this weekend, though, because I'll be in Osaka. But I could probably do any other weekend after that. I'm pretty flexible location-wise.

Hiya gomichild, and all other Tokyo Mefipeople! I'm way down for another meetup, but alas, I am touring our fair island this month, thumping the tubs in the esteemed company of bassists Mike Watt (!) and Kramer. Tour is over 'round the 20th, so I could make something after that, in late February, if y'all can wait. Of course, I understand your interest in doing this one sooner than later, gomichild, with the little one on the way and all! BTW, if'n any of you Eastern Capitol MetaFiltrites wanna come see the aforementioned trio, there's 2 gigs in Tokyo (first one is this coming Friday at Super Deluxe). There's a schedule for the whole shebang here.

I have a couple months of cooking left to go so it can be at the end of Feb no worries. I'm in pretty good condition apart from the extension on the front.

I was even thinking about going to an aquarium or something because I'm a little bit obsessed with them (^_^).
posted by gomichild at 5:11 PM on February 5, 2008

Well, then, for obviously selfish reasons, I vote for a later February meetup, but I'm only one of (hopefully) many, so what sez you other Tokyoites?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 5:35 PM on February 5, 2008

Also that should give kkokkodalk enough time to get her plane ticket....

Hope springs eternal..

I'm cool on Feb 17th, and then for Feb 23/24, it's kinda iffy: my friends are planning to do something on one of those two days, but they haven't decided which yet. So I've got a 50% chance of being available.
posted by Bugbread at 3:53 AM on February 6, 2008

Hmm... the Tokyoites aren't exactly jumping on this. Everybody too busy, maybe... Hopefully a few more folks will speak up today!
posted by flapjax at midnite at 2:57 PM on February 6, 2008

Yes I'm not feeling the love here peoples.....
posted by gomichild at 7:48 PM on February 6, 2008

Bet you're feeling that little human genome project you've got underway there kicking, though, right?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 9:59 PM on February 6, 2008

Hehehehe... yeah been kicking out a lot actually.....

How about a small lunch time get together then?
posted by gomichild at 12:28 AM on February 7, 2008

Although I have no objections to a lunchtime get-together, it really depends on the date. Since flapjax can't make it next weekend, we're currently aiming for the weekend after that, right? I can't show up for lunch on the 23rd, but could probably manage to come to an evening thing. The 24th I could probably manage either way. Do you have a particular place in mind, gomichild? I've been feeling kind of hazy from a cold these past few days and can't seem to come up with any bright ideas.
posted by misozaki at 3:09 AM on February 7, 2008

Weekend is preferable. I'm flexible. I will do my best to be there and not let this be 'yet another Tokyo MeFi meetup that gen missed.'
posted by gen at 5:35 AM on February 7, 2008

Yay gen!

Hopefully we can pull this together!
posted by flapjax at midnite at 7:35 AM on February 7, 2008

Wait isn't gen a sock puppet? (~_^)

Ok how about this for a cunning plan?

Sunday, February 24.

We meet downstairs from the North Exit of Shimokitazawa Station at 11am.

We can then choose whether to have waffles or french toast at another cafe in the backstreets I know, where they also serve their cafe latte in soup bowls.

If its a nice day I will probably waddle around Shimo Kita afterwards taking photos so anyone else is welcome if that sounds like fun.

What do we think?
posted by gomichild at 6:19 PM on February 7, 2008

Put me down for yes on that total plan, gomichild. I'll be bringing my daughter along (she's 7). And I'm sure she'd be delighted to find other youngsters there: bugbread, misozaki, I'm looking at YOU!

(And hey, if we all bring our kids, gomichild can get a little inkling of the miseries joys of parenthood that await her!)
posted by flapjax at midnite at 7:20 PM on February 7, 2008

I haven't been to Shimokita in ages! Sounds great. I'll be there.
posted by misozaki at 7:28 PM on February 7, 2008

Wheeeeee!

Yeah bring the kids - but no scaring the already terrified preggo lady ok?
posted by gomichild at 7:31 PM on February 7, 2008

Drat, should have previewed. I was actually wondering if I should bring my son along or not. If your little one's coming along, I'm sure he'd like to meet her! I'll ask him when he gets back from school and post again.
posted by misozaki at 7:33 PM on February 7, 2008

Ooh, the 24th is doable, I think. If the waffle place is the one I'm thinking of, it should be pretty good. Hope it won't be too crowded! I have no kids, but I'll do my best to cope ;-)
posted by armage at 3:36 PM on February 8, 2008

Yay!

Well bringing a child is not compulsory of course but you could always steal one on the way fairly easily.
posted by gomichild at 4:22 PM on February 8, 2008

Still not sure if I can go (comes down to whether my friends are planning for the 24th or the 23rd). Since my wife has expressed zero interest in coming, and my kid is at exactly the age where one can either wrangle the kid or socialize, not both, little bugbread won't be attending, unfortunately. (I'm thinking "under 6 months" is wrangleable, and "over 4" is wrangleable, but he's at the super ADD age, where nothing will hold his attention for more than 5 minutes, so I'd be chasing him down constantly the whole time, and not get to say much besides "hi").
posted by Bugbread at 6:58 PM on February 8, 2008

My son says he wouldn't mind coming along if there are waffles and/or frech toast involved. He speaks zero English except for what little he learns in school, so I can guarantee he'll be pretty quiet!
posted by misozaki at 7:03 PM on February 9, 2008

Well, it's nice to see there's a possibility of a proper meetup, or something approaching it! And yeah, bugbread, I understand about not wanting to spend the whole time chasing down the young'un. Hope you can make it, though, sans offspring. It's be great to see you again, misozaki, and everyone else who can make it over to Shimokita. So far we have potential attendees:

misozaki
gomichild
armage
whatzit
bugbread
and yours truly...

Some of you other Tokyo MeFiers, though, whre you at? Where's the love, y'all?

I'm in Sendai at the moment, listening to an INCREDIBLY loud band do their soundcheck. (Yay Japan, where even grimy basement rock clubs have wireless internet!) I gotta get outta here and into the dressing room, though, or maybe I'll take a stroll around snowy-covered Sendai.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 11:17 PM on February 9, 2008

Hrm...Looks like I'm going to be unavoidably busy for the whole of February, so I'm not going to be able to go. Damn.
posted by Bugbread at 5:51 PM on February 10, 2008

(T_T)

Don't worry too much about your son misozaki - most of us speak Japanese right? I'm sure we can coax a chat out of him.

*wonders where in the country flapjax is now*

*wonders where in the country flapjax is now*

Hi gomichild, right now I'm in the dressing of the place I'm playing tonight in beautiful downtown Niigata. But we play Tokyo tomorrow night (Shibuya O-Nest), then it's out of town again the next day...

Hey bugbread, what a drag you can't make it. :(

Seconding what gomichild said about misozaki's son. At any rate, with or without offspring, hope you can make it, misozaki!

Any of you others who've shown up in this thread? Y'all coming?

while you guys worked out the details I was in Okinawa. *grin*
I'm planning to come unless my tentative one-day-ski-jaunt-in-Fukushima magically turns into a two-day-ski-adventure-in-Fukushima. So... I'll probably be in Tokyo.

phaedrus441, recently of Chiba and without internet, should be there, for whoever's still counting.

Hope you guys have fun.

so... as long as it is not snowing, I'll be coming on my bike and would prefer to meet people at the restaurant. I'll contact gomichild and give her my phone number so don't wait for me at Shimokita station.
posted by gen at 7:02 PM on February 20, 2008

Looking forward to meeting you, gen! Actually, gomichild, do you happen to have a link, with a map, for the restaurant you have in mind? That might be good.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 8:35 PM on February 20, 2008

I can guide gen - but unfortunately there isn't a map I can find to the place. It's not very far from the station though.

To make things safe though if you would like my keitai number drop me a message at gomichild@gmail.com (or alternatively text me with any questions on gomichild@t.vodafone.ne.jp)

That was my second option actually armage. The place we are going though is not so far from it.

So, anyway, we meet downstairs from the North Exit of Shimokitazawa Station at 11am. I'll be the one in the electric lime green fedora, holding a flaming umbrella and reciting the Bhagavad Gita.

Oh flapjax - it's Shimo Kitazawa - we'll never spot you dressed up like that....

Yeah, this wind is insane! However you're coming, looking forward to seeing you. I'm outta the house right now.

I'm home! French toast with berries and whipped cream was had, café au lait in a soup bowl was had, and fun was had! MeFites are always a great bunch. Myself included. (^_^)/

Does anyone mind if I upload the wobbly photos of everyone my kid took while sitting bored at the corner of the table? flapjax, please let me know if you don't want pics of little pink flapjax floating around the internet. Actually, though, the couple of shots my son took of your daughter were pretty darn cute.

It was really nice meeting everyone! Hope we can manage to get together again sometime during 2008...
posted by misozaki at 12:19 AM on February 24, 2008

Hey, misozaki, sure, go on ahead, post those photos of daughter flapjax. I'm sure she'll be thrilled. And it was great to see/meet y'all!

misozaki- I don't mind. Nice to meet you & son and flapjax & daughter and armage.

Late to the party as usual...

It was great meeting all of you and just chatting about various things. It's rare that I get to spend a Sunday so lazily anymore...

Looking forward to the next meetup -- hopefully more folks can make it.

I'll be sure to look at the pictures once I get home from work.
posted by armage at 9:30 PM on February 24, 2008

I think we win for "cutest MeFi meetup attendees" with little flapjax and little misozaki hitting home runs out of the park for us.
