Server upgrade is complete, but there were certainly bumps along the way. If you spot any weirdness after the fact, drop it here.

I had a metatalk page that bombed during the outage and then when I refreshed it was an old MeFi page from 2002. I am assuming the switch occurred during the outage, but I wasn't really watching the navigation bar.

So what improvements come with this server upgrade?

Wow. Did everyone feel that. I'm noticing that the hate level has been reduced. Is that a feature of the new server?

I don't like it.

There was a period where I was getting no response at all. No 'massaged' page. Is that what was supposed to happen?

Google Reader appeared to have sucked in comments from this thread into this feed.

I just checked the feed now, though, and it's fine. Appears that Google caught the hiccup at just the wrong moment. But I wanted to note this in case anyone else sees this later.

While trying to go to the "Sent Mail" tab of my MeFi Mailbox, I got the following error:

The error occurred on line 48.

I had to shift-refresh the browser to get Mefi back. Matt, did the placeholder include an 'expires' value? I didn't think to check at the time.

I had a metatalk page that bombed during the outage and then when I refreshed it was an old MeFi page from 2002. I am assuming the switch occurred during the outage, but I wasn't really watching the navigation bar.

That's because the subsites were redirecting to the equivalently numbered thread on MeFi.

I think this might have messed up some people's RSS subscriptions, as it was using the permanent redirect code, and some RSS readers treat such a code as license to change the URL it subscribes to.
posted by cillit bang at 12:13 PM on April 18, 2008

Yep, I see the same error on the Sent Mail tab and Contact is borked somehow. Similar problem with the FAQ.

So thanks for fixing my monitor, Matt! (or maybe it's the drugs, but thanks anyway)

I'm playing Doom3 on my laptop lately.

Sometimes the game makes me run out on the Martian surface, oxygen running low, red dust rising with every step I take as the Hell-born monsters block my way to the air-lock.

MeFi down-time has a similar effect on me.

The sidebar meetups and profile photos page are back on the air. The "no recent meetups" message wasn't related to the server changes. There were in fact no recent meetups! (Within the last 14 days, anyway.) So now we're showing meetups within the last 20 days in the sidebar.
posted by pb (staff) at 8:09 AM on April 19, 2008

PB - Thanks. I conflated ( my dictionary says that's not a word, but I like it) the fact that the meetup thread stays open for 6 months with the longevity of the sidebar info. Now the thread is all bookmarked so I can reminisce anytime I want. Lovely.

No problems, just a big "thank you"!
I use Firefox and it used to be that every time I posted something, Firefox would hang and I'd get an error message, although my posts themselves would go through (after a spate of double posts, I finally wised up to this quirk). No error messages or issues with MeFi timing out today.
Thanks Matt!

posted by !Jim at 9:18 PM on April 19, 2008

!Jim, we recently updated the YT player code, and everything is being handled by JavaScript now. So if you have JavaScript disabled (or a JavaScript blocking Firefox extension installed), you'll likely get that message.
posted by pb (staff) at 9:52 PM on April 19, 2008

Just wanted to pass along that, from my perspective, this was very smoothly handled. Great job... this kind of thing is so easy to get wrong.
posted by Malor at 11:53 PM on April 19, 2008

Oh, I see what it is. It used to be that I could middle-click on the player link to watch the youtube video in a new tab by itself. I like doing that because it can load while I read, and sometimes I just let it play in the background. All without the horror that is youtube comments (and their UI). Any chance we can get that back?

I'm still getting the massage message (Tuesday p.m.) if I go straight to MeFi home page. Like no_moniker, all other pages work fine and, oddly, I'm able to get to MeFi posts if I come at them through back door links (i.e., via MeFiTalk, AskMeFi, etc....).

By the way, whatever problem that required reloading to get a response - mtu settings? - seems to have evaporated. Pages are reliably coming through on the first (not the second) time.
posted by Pronoiac at 6:29 PM on April 22, 2008

As of today, I'm still getting the "massage" message if I come in via the MeFi front door OR the MeFi link at the top of any MeFi page, including this one. Links to specific MeFi posts coming in from other MeFi sites work just fine, as does any MeFi link once I sneak in to MeFi.

As you're not being bombarded with these messages, I'm sure it's not on your end, but what/where should I be looking to fix this? I am not having any other ISP/connectivity or probs accessing any other URL. I'm stumped.
posted by webhund at 10:47 AM on April 24, 2008

If anyone's still having the "massage" problem, here are a couple things to try. First, load the MeFi front page in your browser and hold down the Shift key while you click the page reload button. This will force your browser to get the latest version of the page, which should be the current front page. If that doesn't work, try clearing your browser cache and reloading the site. Here are some helpful links: Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, and Opera.
