Central Vermont Meetup to Welcome ThePinkSuperhero and Stynxno April 27, 2008 4:23 PM   Subscribe

ThePinkSuperhero and stynxno will be in the area over the Memorial Day weekend, and naturally we central Vermont folks must welcome them with a meetup on Saturday, May 24.

There has been some discussion about this offsite, and one of the ideas floating about is meeting at Peavine's pub in Bethel for drinks and river/scenery peeping. Depending on what is playing at the drive-in that night we could migrate there, or to Onion Flats cremee stand for ice cream.

If we go with Peavine's the start time would probably be between 4 and 5 p.m. in order to make sure they can accommodate a large group.

Any other ideas are welcome!

Everyone would gather
on the 24th of May
Sitting in the stands
to watch the fireworks display

Dancing fires on the beach
Singing songs together
Though it's just a memory
Some mem'ries last forever

At some point, face north and yell 'Ciao!' to my grandparents up the road apiece. (They're from the Old Country)

jonmc: still in Barre? Give me their number and I'll invite them.

Ha! That'd be a frightening encounter on both sides, I think.

How so? Your mom already loves hanging out with me. What a tiger. Psst, yr dad, too. But don't tell either of them. They each think we're exclusive. It's complicated.

Oh, well, I'll tell my mom to stop telling you to go back to school and make something of yourself if you leave Dad alone about the Nancy Sinatra thing. he can't help it, he's a man of his time.

I know I labeled this a central Vermont meetup, but we'd LOVE to see other northern New Englanders who are interested in a visit.

Saturday, huh?

Hell with it, I've got nothing else going on that weekend.

Anyone who wants to carpool 2+ hours from the Boston area in an old red Saturn 2-door coupe that drives way too fast is hereby offered a ride. Limit of 3 people.

Massachusetts is technically not in Northern New England. I'll be going to this meetup, but getting back from Wisconsin just a little bit beforehand so won't be too helpful with the planning.

We'll be in New Mexico that day as part of a cross country trip. Well be traveling through southern Vermont (via Bennington) on the 29th. Too bad about the timing-- we'd love to see you guys again!

Alas, I'll be moving that weekend. Perhaps someone can give me my first ever shoutout.

Sounds fabulous. We'll try to make this this one of our Rochester weekends and make the trek over the mountain.

googly: yeah, Bethel Mountain Road is fine this time of year, so hopefully you can make it over!

People are still welcome to offer up alternate plan ideas, but I wanted to let everyone know that I spoke with a manager at Peavine's and they said they shouldn't have any problem accommodating us that night at the time suggested.

Ah, too bad for me — especially since it's always been a dream of mine to meet a pink superhero — but I gotta start tour guiding again along the Maine coast on the 19th, so I'll be far from Windsor County on the 24th. (I'm sure a great time will be had by all...)

Hrm. The last time I knew TPS was in town, I bailed while on the way. I still owe her a beer, so maybe I'll actually make this one!

Would anyone familiar with the area care to comment on this planned route to the meetup? Strangely, I am already in VT for the weekend and would be cycling to the meetup. Also, can anyone suggest an inexpensive hotel for Saturday night on my proposed route or in the area of the meetup?

That ride will be lovely, the route along the river [107 along the river] is a little hairy because the rode is narrow with almost no shoulder. If you're okay with that, then it should be fine, otherwise, lmk and I can fetch you someplace. I have two guestrooms and you are welcome to one of them.

comment on this planned route...

That area in Rutland where U.S. 4 and 7 come together is many many cars and much congestion; if I were you coming north — especially on a bike — I would bail out to the east before then (right turn on N. Shrewsbury Rd., Curtis Ave., or even Allen Street) and go over to Cold River/Stratton Road, then north to meet U.S. 4.

And who can give me crash space?
posted by Eideteker at 4:41 AM on May 21, 2008

Eideteker, you can stay at my place. You'll have to fight sequential for the good guest room. I think the plan is meet at Peavine at 5 or thereabouts? Doesn't look like the drive-in will be open by this weekend. Anyone wanna MeMail other local MeFites and let them know what's up?

Peavine at 5 works for meeeee!

jessamyn, would you message the others please?
posted by terrapin at 6:54 PM on May 21, 2008

Sorry, I'm in Wisconsin until late Friday night or early Saturday morning. I'm a bad point person for this particular event.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 7:01 PM on May 21, 2008

Eideteker, you are welcome at ours as well, but jessamyn is closer to the pub. Plus our road is rutty and not very motorcycle friendly. I'll look for the air mattress just in case.
posted by terrapin at 7:01 PM on May 21, 2008

We'll be there too.
posted by googly at 12:21 PM on May 22, 2008

You seem not to remember what kind of motorcycle I have. Plus, my driveway is rutty; I've gotten very good at ruts. (No comments about my life, thanks.)

Alas, work is right now threatening to cause me to explode into thousands of tiny little bits. Maybe some of those bits will land in VT; probably not. I just spent a long weekend in NH; as much as I love Vermont and y'all, I'm going to have to disappoint for the sake of my sanity. I'll send invites when I'm finally ready for my housewarming, though.
posted by Eideteker at 12:21 PM on May 22, 2008

I've never met you, but hey, if it will entice you up to VT, we can offer you: your own guestroom, bathroom, BBQ dinner, and a rut-free but excitingly steep driveway to play around on. And good music. And cats.
