I don't own it. It's 569 bytes in size. At worst it would cost 'em a few megs of bandwidth. (My attempt to defend an action I didn't give too much thought)

And if that wasn't enough, you can make your own.

or, better yet, how about asking the webmaster before directly linking an image from the site?

Done what exactly? I've never posted an image to the front page. Any that I've posted to comments I've hosted on my site. I'll admit that the Eyeball Kid in my profile was lifted from Eddie Campbell's site, but it's a promotional pic that has fair use behind it. The link is to his site, but the image is hosted on my server. There's a huge difference between directing someone towards a site and using an image stored on someone's web server on your page. It's bad enough that when a site gets /.'ed and goes down, but at least the traffic is expected. You build a website and expect visitors.
To put it in another light: what if Amazon started placing images from your site on their front page? Before you answer that with "MeTa isn't Amazon", remember that MeFi gets 1,000,000+ page loads a month. I don't know about you, but an embedded image on a FPP would drive my site right into extra fees.
As for coming down on someone without having the facts about the situation, you're right, I may have been a bit rash. It's just one of my little peeves.

I get bandwidth copped from me from LiveJournal users [who have no server space] all the damned time. not that it costs me anything, but I know it costs some folks. I have developed a technique for dealing with these folks if they don't respond well to a polite requent to unlink. [and self-links are often finein MeTa and in comments, btw].
that said, I found the blogstickers cute but not compelling. anyone else?

Has anyone else noticed what the sticker at the top of this thread now says? Cute. :)

Bandwidth stealing is evil. Don't link it unless you own it. And if you own it, then it's a self-link, which is evil on MeFi.
