PAX Meetup? August 18, 2008 5:21 PM Subscribe
Is anyone going to PAX? If so, we should convene, converse, and imbibe. Interested?
August 29th - 31st
It is a gaming / nerd event.
For those who were wondering what the hell it is.

Mefight Club will have a contingent there, it seems. I'm not following the current thread in our forum, but there's been talk of it. Our tada! second Mefight Meetup!

I'll be there - we could do a meetup somewhere in the Convention Center or nearby. . . PAX needs a beer garden.

I'm not going to PAX but I wouldn't mind joining you folks for a meetup.

This has fallen off the front page, and the detailed schedule for PAX is now online, so it might be good to start proposing details. Don't ask me, I just moved here.

To get this on the meetup sidebar, how about this suggestion (and to get people thinking about this).
There appears to be a lull between 6 and 8pm, on Saturday (unless you want to see the far cry / prince of persia demo).
I suggest we meet a Stumbling Monk, a belgian beer bar (beer/wine only, no hard liquor, no food. but the beer is good). It is a 5-15 minute walk up olive from the convention center, but it is a lot better than the bars that will be in the immediate vicinity of PAX that will be stuffed to the gills with people.
Also, there are plenty of places to eat around here that are cheap (Pho, Thai, Dick's Burgers) for folks who want to do that.

Stumbling Monk is cozy and fun. I'm down, but I probably can't get there until 7.30 or so.

A Mefi meetup at the Stumbling Monk? Dear lord, that's my universe collapsing into a singularity. I'll be there.
BTW, for anyone who'll be wanting food, it's completely acceptable to bring take-out pizza and other noshables into the Monk.

The Stranger page that mrzarquon linked has a Google map that erroneously (I think) places the Stumbling Monk downtown near Pacific Place. I believe that there map pin is set at 635 E Olive rather than 1635, the Monk's actual address. The Yelp page map has a more accurate pin:

... unless I'm completely out of the loop and the place moved recently, which is possible, because I cannot remember the last time I was in any loop whatsoever. I could go walk down the street to verify that the Monk is still there, but this would lead to excessive beer-drinking on a Tuesday.

Google is all sorts of broken for it, but this pin is correct (they are not in fact the stumbling goat bistro)
Cross streets of Belmont and East Olive Way, near B&O Espresso and Glorias.

Wow. At last, a meetup I can actually make! I'll be at PAX Friday through Sunday with my shiny new press badge. Looking forward to meeting you all.
How will we recognize our fellow mefites? Plates of beans, anyone?

I usually ask random likely-looking people if they're "friends of Matthew Haughey." Last time, instead, I asked if they were here for Jessamyn's party.

I am barely a mefite, but I will be at PAX for the full weekend and might be able to make it to the meetup. Also note that there is a pre-PAX dinner on Thursday night; I'm going, but I think tickets may be sold out.

I've always imagined strolling into a bar and shouting 'I LIKE PANCAKES! WHO HERE LIKES PANCAKES?', but there's never been a meetup in Korea, so the opportunity continues to elude me.

I live 4 blocks from the monk, it opens at 6pm (so don't worry about getting there early to get a table, 6pm is early).
I'll be there sporting the mefi sign. There is a big table in the middle of the room, can't miss it, i'll be camping there.
I'll probably end up at PAX just on sunday, as I have a lot of other things to get done, but I have been meaning to check it out since I've moved to seattle 3 years ago.

I want to say I'll be at this one, but my brother is in town (for PAX, natch--what, you thought I was the only geek in my family?) and crashing on my sofa this weekend. I don't know whether he's going to feel like stumbling out to the Monk, particularly since he's not a drinker. Since I hardly ever see the guy I may not be able to bring myself to abandon him to his own devices on said sofa.
I'll try to avoid a repeat performance of this if I do show up. (I don't remember who took this shot--for reasons that I think are self-evident--but I'd like to thank him or her for preserving this fine moment.)

I actually don't drink beer* and right now probably couldn't take the wine 'cause of the pills issue, so feel free to bring him along and mingle, he won't be alone!
*No, I am not some uppity snot, I grew up about a mile away from a brewery and could smell the hops all the time as a child.

I'm going to skip PAX, I decided -- too much to do around the house, and I'm already going to Bumbershoot tomorrow -- but I will be there. Just look for the fat guy that could be a pyro.

Ah, ok. I'll change it from "Blurry picture of Random German friend of Artw" to "Blurry picture of Peter." I'll get those up is a bit.
Pretty much all of the pictures are blurry. I need some kind of DaShiv photo seminar meetup. And perhaps to pull out the camera before the third beer. Whichever.

YoBananaBoy- I think it is standard practice to make a set (Metafilter Pax Meetup, 8.30.08, etc.) and then have one of those linked above, instead of going to each photo.
Thanks again for taking pics though, I would have brought my camera, but my arms were dead, and I would have looked like a trex failing at holding a camera.
Anytime folks want to meetup at the Monk, I am game.
