Missoula Meetup September 6, 2008 11:07 AM   Subscribe

I'll be in Missoula Montana in the next few days, and I'm interested in organizing a Metafilter Meetup. So far, we appear to have TWO, count 'em TWO participants, so the plan so far is to meet at the Butterfly Herb at 8:00 AM Monday September 8. Yes, that's anti meridian...

Well, good luck! Not many MeFites here in Big Sky Country. My daughter is there at college, but I'm a good 5 hour drive away in Billings. Bummer! I wish I could make it.

And why are you so against meridian?!

I'm jealous. What a cool town.

Indeed. Missoula really is a nearly ideal place if you like small city living. Plus it has the advantage of being a cool enough place, and having a big enough college population that lots of bands, comedians, and other acts perform there. Plus a pretty active local arts scene. I'm actually jealous of my kid getting to live there!

Please, not Anti Meridian. We prefer the title Pro Parallel.

Damn. If I didn't have to work today, it would be worth the drive over from Great Falls. Have fun, MeFiers!

Well, I guess I'll have to host a Billings Meetup next time anyone is passing this way. I'm just a few hours from Yellowstone Park, and 90 minutes from Cody, Wyoming, home of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.

We had a great conversation that included the history of the Wilma theater, document theft and preservation, harsh winters, Chris and Rudy Autio, David Rorvik, and Missoula's 1983 car bomb.

ikahime was most helpful in directing me to the microfilmed collection of Missoulian back issue newspapers at the public library. I spent a good part of an afternoon searching through microfilm, all the while silently damning the antiquated technology then finally, success! I literally got up out of my chair and did a victory dance when I found what I was looking for. Thankfully this was a semi-private room, so no ruckus ensued... I'm planning on uploading my find to my website at a later date.
