Login problems during debate? September 26, 2008 9:05 PM Subscribe
Strange occurrence...earlier I was on my Asus EEE, and every time I tried to log in to Metafilter it would flash the login page quickly and then jump me back to where I was before that. No other sites had any issues, and restarting the browser didn't help. Did anyone else experience this?
Now that I'm back on my regular computer I'm still logged in, no problem. I'm a little wary of logging out and trying to get back in.

Hey! We just had a full 24+ hours without a MetaTalk thread!

Three individual "days" without a metatalk in a week (23rd and 19th in PDT as well). It's been a good week.

Sounds like possibly a corrupted cookie? Try deleting your metafilter login cookie, restart the browser, and going to the page again?

Wow - original Linux? That's incredible!
How do you keep Firefox running under 64mb? Did you port in the X windows system yourself?
And, uh... how the hell did you manage to jam an old 386 processor and an AT-harddisk into an EEE? Seems like that'd be a real task.

Hah. I'm guessing kickstart just meant the original Linux Asus EEE (Xandros flavor) rather than the new XP version. My friend has one of each and I'm insanely jealous, even though my clunky fingers can't handle hacking at the tiny keys.
Also, an entire day without a metatalk thread during this part of the American election cycle and current economic problems is kind of nice. Good job, people.

Making annoying jokes like I just did is the only way I can hide my own jealousy, actually. I want one of those little things so bad. I think that if my wife has to say 'what do you need a tiny computer for?' one more time, she's probably going to go nuts.
And, yeah: good on, people. No meta is good meta. 'Specially right now.

Open the terminal, type gsynaptics. Make sure that, under the scrolling tab, "enable two finger horizontal scrolling" is unchecked, or if checked, the value on the slider is the second to lowest. Note that the slider value is NOT retained after a reboot, so you'll have to do this each time you boot.
See if that fixes the problem.

koeselitz and I are kindred spirits. May your Eee never allow you to login to MeFi, you lucky bastards.

Works fine on my Eee. Running the eee Xanadros with the kernel patched for 2gb memory and Fluxbox for a window manager.
Ahhh, fluxbox. How do I love thee? Allow me to count the ways.
One one-thousand!
Two one-thousand!
Handscripted-menus three one-thousand!
Desktop Icons are for pansies four one-thousand!
I tihnk my favorite part is that it fits into the smaller outside pocket of my already small camelback backpack.

Fluxbox is wonderful. It really is.
Openbox is better.
Handscripted menus? Pfft. Try handscripted dynamically generated menus. In Python!

empyrean: yes.
koeselitz: You doubt my geek cred? I was using Slackware while it was still in version 1.x, and this was a few years after I started working in the IT field. I learned Perl on Slackware not long after, then played with PHP not long after Lendorf (hope I remember that name right) released it. I've ran (a guess) about 30 different distros, and some of those on roughly the hardware you are laughing about. Heck, a 486 (with no CPU fan) was my home file and print server up until last year. It used Linux and Samba, and was named Gollum before the movies were a twinkle in Peter Jackson's eye. I think I'll leave Linux on my eee.

I am but a mere mortal, Kickstart, and bow to your mighty cred, which is far better than mine.
As I said, I joke out of jealousy.

Since my official price for servicing an EEE is free, I see you must work for the Federal Reserve to be able to apply that kind of new math.
