Frankenstein Night, anyone? October 14, 2008 10:13 AM   Subscribe

Sci Fi Screening Room event meet-up in NYC?

I've been asked to present a clip at Frankenstein Night in the East Village on Monday the 27th, and I thought it would be a good opportunity for mefites to mingle under Halloween-esque pretenses. In addition to old clips there will also be a radio-play performance of Mary Shelley's original story. Admission is $7.

The venue, Under St. Marks, has a bar, and it would be a blast to go out foraging after the curtain has fallen.

Oh, this sounds like fun! I'll definitely try to make it.

Jesus, meetups two weeks in a row. We rock.

I'll try to make this too.

Yeah, I figured it was just far enough out from the one this friday to make it worth mentioning. Plus, who doesn't want more Halloween plans to pick from?

I'll be in costume, and I think there will be a special admission deal for costumed audience members, still TBA.

I wish I could make it, but I have class until 10:00. Going out afterwards, I could do!

I'll be there.

I'm in, unless Gossip Girl looks really good.

Sounds fabulous, but I can't stay too late because I have to teach the next day.

Yeah, what miss-lapin said.

I am wearing the same dress today that I wore to this weekend's meet-up and am therefore banning myself from this gathering until I learn how to do my laundry in a timely fashion. Have fun in my absentia!

I'll see if I can make this, though I probably won't be in costume. This year will be the first time I actually have a Halloween costume since...college, so don't want to blow my costume wad before the actual day since I'm planning on doing the whole parade thing.

Here's the update: admission to the event is $7; wearing a costume knocks it down to $5. I don't know how many people will really dress up, but unlike kkokkodalk, I can't wait to blow my costume wad, so I'll be dressed up.

There will be a couple of intermissions for those of you who want to cruise through but don't want to make a night of it, and I'm hoping those who stay for the whole shebang will join me afterward for a drink at BUA, just down the street.

If you really want to come but the admission fee is a serious impediment, message me privately.

Meh -- I don't think I can make this after all. Life stuff needs a bit more careful tending-to, alas.

I'm interested in going to this, but I've never been to a meetup. How do I spot the mefis?

Just look for the most attractive people in the place. We'll be the group they're trying to avoid.

Oftentimes there will be a snappy little sign (handwritten on a napkin or a folded sheet of wrinkled, beer-stained copy paper) identifying us.

ok excellent. count me in!

I typed before I thought, Plz. This event's probably going to be much different than typical bar/restaurant meetups, so there may not be a sign to let you know where mefis are.

Paging [NOT]...

If [NOT] or anyone else is wearing a costume, it should be easier to gather all the Mefites together. Maybe someone will share, unless they want it to be a surprise. I'm going as Inga from "Young Frankenstein" if I can get it together.

At the beginning of the night I'll be running around helping to set up or greet people. If you are a lurker or n00b and need to be pointed toward the other mefites, approach me and I'll point you to them.

I'll be easy to spot; my costume has so many googly-eyes glued to it that I rattle when I move.

Ah, this is tonight?! For some reason I had this scheduled on Tuesday in my head...hrm....hopefully I can still make it...

I might have to work late tonight and not be able to make this after all. Hopefully I will, but if not, I will be at the next one.

A heads up that the place locks its doors after the show starts might have been nice....Also would have helped if there was:
A) a sign with the name of the place
#2 a poster for the frankenstein movie night thing
III. really just any indication that the place exists at all would have been nice

Ah well, at least I only live a 30 second walk away... Hope you all had fun!

On a second pass (walking the dog before bed), ok, there is a sign. But it says St Mark's Theater. With a barely legible "under" somewhere in wood above it. So I'm blind. Either way, the door was locked. Oh well...hopefully next time!
posted by Grither at 7:16 PM on October 27, 2008

Yeah sorry, it looks like the sign has been busted out since the last time I was there, I didn't know.

Evangeline, I looked for you at 132 after, but the radio play went a little long and you two were outta there by then.

I'm impressed that so many of you did come, however. Wish I got to talk to you more...

That was fun and I wasn't too scared!
Nice work on your costume, [NOT].
(now you have to guess if I am being sardonic or just naming you)

Either way, the door was locked.
Really? Because I left and came back in without a problem.

I'm sorry I didn't catch up with you guys. One of our Mefites was late from work and texted me that she was down the street, so we left to go meet her.

But the clips I did see were pretty great!

Well, I walked down a couple steps into a skeezy little doorway thing with two doors, one on the left with a punch pad key lock thing, and one on the right with a padlock on it. Both were (obviously) locked, and the guys standing next outside the tattoo place next door confirmed that is was Under St Mark's and they also mentioned that sometimes they lock the door when a show is under way. Did you leave during an intermission in the show or something? What time did it end?
posted by Grither at 7:51 AM on October 28, 2008

We were there until almost 11; you must have been at the wrong door, because I know they didn't lock it-- my friend Billy arrived late and just wandered on in. By then the woman selling admission was standing in the back of the house snagging the stragglers.

Aw, man. Sounds like you guys had fun. Sadly, I had to bow out because I was out doing work-related liver destruction.

Hahaha ok, well, apparently I'm an idiot.

No, I think you can shrug that title off onto the tattoo guys :)

Aww man...but it was a step up from my previous title of buffoon!

Sorry about the delay.
