For me it means I had great intentions of posting a wonderful photo set with captions and comments, and then got distracted by life moving on at its usual rapid pace.

I do love meetup photos and hope they make a return when things settle down a bit in the New Year. It's been an election year and, speaking only for myself, a lot of my energy went in different directions than usual. Maybe that's true for others. Let's hope that in this new era of change and optimism, we can soon return to our usual level of communal narcissism!

I think it's because meetups are happening more and more frequently. Would someone smarter than me please graph the frequency of the meetup tag? I checked the infodump, like I would know what to do with it, but didn't find a category for tagdata for metatalk.

Also, I thought nola was going to bring the camera.

Also also, Billy-no-mates in the US is known as George-no-pals, which doesn't sound nearly as good.

I enjoy correcting people when they say "have their cake and eat it too".

But there's nothing to correct - that's the expression as most commonly transmitted in the culture, apparently ten times as frequently, and a far more familiar usage than "eat your cake and have it too (Googlefight: 363,000 for the standard construction vs 16,700 for the reversed version). Of course it means "you can't consume your cake and also keep it," but the meaning is understood despite the construction.

The phrase is confusing, but so are others like "pretty is as pretty does," and we don't correct those to simpler forms ("a pretty appearance comes from cultivating prettiness?").

actually, as someone who has been to a lot of meetups, and has taken a lot of photos at them, i find the urge to document the event wanes the more frequently people are meeting up. Or if it is the same group of folks. We just want to chat and hang out, the urge to document what has just become a group of friends talking over beers gets old in that situation.

Unless of course, we are off doing something neat and interesting, and want to take photos for our own group memories. In part it goes from "hey lets get together with a group of metafilter people and talk about stuff" to "lets get together with some friends who I met through metafilter."

Some meetups just have a more casual hangout vibe, whether that's because we're familiar with one another already or just doing something that doesn't jibe with portraits and snapshots.

Eideteker : It means there were no survivors.

This is why I stopped throwing parties; the old rallying cry of "Last one needing hospitalization is the loser!" really forced some of us to take a hard look at the lifestyle after a couple of years.

Still, every once in a while it's still fun to see how assorted illicit substances, alcohol, firearms, gas operated power-tools, explosives, venomous reptiles, heavy machinery, a couple of clergy members, a donkey, a frozen lake, 250 pounds of Skittles, and a willingness to travel into international waters will work together.

*sigh*

Good times.

The more I think about this not updating meet-up posts, the more I like it. Every time anyone asks Mathowie what he thinks is neat about Metafilter he is all like "People get together in real life and then get married and that is neat." One, what are you Matt, Jane fucking Austen? Everyone has to get married in the end to be happy? How's 1950 going Matt? Two, you know what, I happen to think that the non-real life related aspects of Metafilter are by far neater than getting together with a bunch of nerds in a bar and taking each others digital photographs. You think I don't get enough face time with smelly nerds? Cause I can assure you that I do. While some people may choose to interact with one another in real life, I think that they should do that in private and not be so "in your face" about it. So, I wholly approve of not posting pictures of your sordid little "meet-ups." I find them disgusting. I even find e-mails and me-mails and cyber-chatting (I think that is what you call it) far too intimate for my tastes. One on one communication is too intrusive, too personal. People are meant to type things about things to a general audience of people that they have never met. Every other kind of interaction is base and I want nothing to do with it. Kindly continue to keep it to yourselves.

Your American Express card has a color? How déclassé. All the Hollywood celebrities and Washington elite have the new Conceptual AmEx. It's not a actual card, just a certain combination of physical stance and facial expression that combines with just the right sense of entitlement to act as a signal to waitstaff, hair colorists and shopgirls around the world. They will know immediately who you are, and how to process the appropriate charges to your Conceptual account.

By "black" I mean it is a void in the universe, a small 3 by 2 void, but a void none the less. Light (and small consumer products) goes in and never come out so it appears black. I actually never use the card itself (just the numbers) because if I take it out of my wallet it's mass will throw off the tides.

MetaFilter: The Home Game

The goal of MetaFilter: The Home Game is to receive an invitation to join The Cabal. Game play involves navigating threads about politics, gender, race, Macs vs. PCs, your favarite bands, books, TV shows, and movies, and steam-punk unicorn pr0n; relationshipFilter and should I eat this questions; and MetaTalk free-for-alls - all while collecting linked-by contacts, favorites, and best answers and posting FPPs. Points are lost if you are flagged, deleted, unfavorited, or removed as a contact. Lose a turn if you are temp-banned or push the big, red button. Lose the game if you are caught self-linking.

Unfortunately, the rules don't state how many points you need to accumulate to receive your invitation to join The Cabal, since there is no cabal. Therefore, one can never actually win MetaFilter: The Home Game. One can only lose.
