For those lucky enough to be going, what bands are you excited about seeing at SXSW?

I'm really looking forward to Kosheen. Sugary drum and bass is my guilty pleasure. And Spoon always rocks.

Any suggestions?

Not that I'm going, but I'd suggest that they drop Kill Rock Stars in favor of someone with talent.

if i were going i'd most likely want to see:

girls against boys, man or astroman?, add n to (x), atom and his package, chicks on speed, her space holiday, departure lounge, supersuckers, tsol, nashville pussy, marcy playground, luna

but i'd really be upset if i missed girls against boys, man or astroman?, chicks on speed and the supersuckers. catch them if you can.

All good bands...

But what about:
The Damned
Neil Finn
Rasputina

No slouches there.

I'd like to see Dressy Bessy too. They did some nice stuff on the "But I'm a Cheerleader" soundtrack.

Dexter Romweber is awesome, and I'm excited to see that Victim's Family has stayed together after reforming last year. We can only hope that Genitallica and The Catheters are on the same bill.

The Weakerthans do an electric live show - folk-punk from a former Propagandhi member.

Bullfrog's got mad, positive funk, soul and hip-hop, and it features Kid Koala, virtuoso, on turntables.

Tom McRae and Ed Harcourt would both do interesting mope-folk shows, methinks...

Wish I was there.

If I were going, I'd see the Sadies. Country psycho-punk stuff. Good.

Wait. There's music at SXSW?

Ok, so I'm not going, and I really haven't heard any of the groups I'm going to second-hand recommend.

Bare Jr.
Cowboy Mouth
Luna
Man or Astroman
Marcy Playground
Riddlin' Kids
Starsailor
ulu
Umphrey's McGee
Wayne
The Weeb Brothers

Several of those have some sort of connection with Aware Records, whom I HIGHLY recommend.

Marcy Playground ... is still around?

Starsailor ... if you can take the singer's voice, they're really good.

Man... or Astroman? do a kick ass show by any standard.

Ick. Starsailor (like Haven, or, frankly, Travis) is a lousy alternative to the quality mope-rock of Coldplay or Elbow.

Riddlin' Kids are a very good punk band. And, since they're local, if you miss them at SXSW you can probably catch them at a bar in town later.

The Mendoza Line. Greil Marcus just gave them props and their new album rocks. Don't be put off by the web site. They've got presence and wit.

Oh, yeah: One of the members is in my book club. Another one is a drinking buddy. And I'm doing their next web site. For free because I like their tunes. I've got a couple of live show and fooling-around CDs here somewhere that I'm gonna try to convince them to let me post on the new site.

Hanson! I am so there. And the band "I am the WTC" has been around for years, I think they released a statement after the attacks.

I fucked the girl in Hanson, you know.
