I'm in love with Massachusetts! April 1, 2009 8:21 AM   Subscribe

I'll be in Boston between the 7th and the 17th and would like to get together.

I have plans for the 7th and want to go to James Carroll's reading on the 9th, but I'm free the rest of the time.

Jonathan Katz is performing at Improv Boston on the 16th at 7pm. The show shouldn't be more than an hour. My girlfriend and I are planning to attend if anyone would like to join us. Maybe a meetup after?
posted by Diskeater at 9:23 AM on April 1, 2009

Meetups scheduled on a Friday or Saturday evening seem to attract more attendees. That said, I have no idea right now when I'll be available.

Ooh. I just moved to Boston yesterday and would love to meet some of you guys. Still getting settled in, but I am generally free after 7 pm.

crap, the only weekend in that range is Easter weekend. What about the night of Friday the 10th?
posted by xbonesgt at 10:26 AM on April 1, 2009

I'm out of town the 13th through the 15th (look out, Wichita!) but otherwise I'm generally free.

I might be in for anything that is not on a Monday or Wednesday as I have preexisting plans. As long as it is not too much money.

If I were willing to go to a meetup -- which I'm not -- I'd say that Friday the 10th sounds like a favorable date. I had a really great time at Cornwall's last time I went there -- but don't expect me to meet you there. Not to mention it's been a long time since we -- and by we I mean you -- had a meetup in Boston Proper.
posted by Plutor at 12:32 PM on April 1, 2009

Cornwall's is in Kenmore, and April 10 is after Opening Day, but luckily the Sox will be in Los Angeles that night. So we you won't have to worry about baseball crowds.
posted by Plutor at 12:34 PM on April 1, 2009

Cornwall's has a pretty huge selection of board games and such, if we wanted to do the whole commandeer-a-place-to-eat-and-play-games thing again. Not that I have anything against Apples to Apples, but it sort of gets old after like 73 rounds.
posted by xbonesgt at 1:10 PM on April 1, 2009

I'm going to try and not miss this one.
posted by bensherman at 1:16 PM on April 1, 2009

Go to Cornwall's. My wife and I had our first date there. I'm totally not going because of babby, but it's awesome.

Aw crap. Actually, can't do the 10th; that's my Passover seder. (They need me to be the wicked son.) Anyone up for the 11th?
posted by grobstein at 8:59 PM on April 1, 2009 [1 favorite]

The 11th is fine....and it looks like Cornwall's has improved since I lived in Boston. 7pm ok?
posted by brujita at 10:11 PM on April 1, 2009

I'll be out of town from the 10th-12th but I'll really, really try to make the next one. Have fun guys!
posted by Diskeater at 6:29 AM on April 2, 2009

I keep missing these! My family's in town from the 8th to the 12th, so I really had no shot at making this one. Let's plan another one soon, so I can go to it!
posted by shaun uh at 9:19 AM on April 2, 2009

Yes please. So, 7 at Cornwalls on the 11th?
posted by Admiral Haddock at 5:43 AM on April 3, 2009

Well, nuts. I'm not going to be able to make this one. The Providence Contingent sends its regards.

Ok, I'm definitely coming to this one. Maybe someone will play connect four with me? Watch out - I'm pretty sneaky.

Do they have Settlers? Does anyone have . . . Settlers?
posted by grobstein at 2:06 PM on April 3, 2009

I have Settlers! And I just moved here, so I'll try to be there! With Metroid Baby!
posted by ignignokt at 2:49 PM on April 3, 2009

With Metroid Baby!

Knew there was something fishy about those Twitter icons!
posted by grobstein at 2:51 PM on April 3, 2009

It's true, grobstein! Ignignokt and I are special friends!

I'm useless during Settlers, though. Unless you enjoy tired wood-for-sheep jokes.
posted by Metroid Baby at 8:30 PM on April 3, 2009

Aw, c'mon! And there'll be Settlers! Dang!
posted by The Great Big Mulp at 9:01 PM on April 3, 2009

I've never played Settlers....Trivial Pursuit?

Love 'em!

Oooh la la, a Boston meetup that's not in Cambridge! I will try to be there.

I'll be playing frisbee all day but I'll try to make it if we get back in time.

I have Settlers, but I am out of town the 11th.

So, I guess you all can suck it.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 1:54 PM on April 5, 2009

Actually, your revenge will have to wait! Ignignokt says he's bringing Settlers!
posted by grobstein at 5:28 PM on April 5, 2009

I have never played Settlers, and only know about it because of this thread. If I can't make it to the meetup, I will definitely look for the home version. (Of the game. I'm already on the home version of MetaFilter.)
posted by not_on_display at 6:21 PM on April 5, 2009

G-ddamnit. I guess we'll have to have another meetup at some later point for you all to gather WITHOUT Settlers and proceed to suck it.
posted by grapefruitmoon at 7:36 PM on April 5, 2009

Maybe i'll bring Zombies. I think that's the most interesting board game I have, unless anyone gets really hot and bothered by backgammon...

(Can I brag here that I have a chess set that I built from hand out of aluminum bars?)

I'm impressed! Yeah, I'd say that's braggable.

So it turns out my "I won't come" fake-out is now completely true. Have a good time, guys, that's a fun place, and I was looking forward to finally learning Settlers.
posted by Plutor at 5:35 AM on April 8, 2009

I'm not familiar with Zombies either, but I'm game for something new ;-) .
posted by brujita at 9:41 PM on April 8, 2009

Well, I just blew all my spare cash for the month on replacing my misplaced T pass, so I'll have to skip this one :(
posted by mkb at 6:27 AM on April 9, 2009

I am not going to make it, again, I have made plans to be out of town.

Dang. Again.
posted by bensherman at 7:37 AM on April 9, 2009

There is going to be stuff besides Settlers, right? I'm really not much of a gamer, except for the kind of games where you draw pictures of butts and then everyone drinks.
posted by Metroid Baby at 10:08 AM on April 9, 2009

Zombies!!!

I could also bring a backgammon set. We could wager drinks (the doubling cube could be dangerous...).
posted by backseatpilot at 11:22 AM on April 9, 2009

I can play the drawing pictures of butts and drinking game totally awesomely; you're on! (If I can get there -- chances are good.)
posted by not_on_display at 9:29 PM on April 9, 2009

We could bring some post its and do a live version of that drawing telephone game..

I'm really tempted to bring Race for the Galaxy, but although it is crazy awesome it's pretty rules intensive, so who knows.

Hopefully I'll manage to make it, but Boston is so-far-away (from somerville).
posted by nat at 10:45 PM on April 9, 2009

That telephone drawing game rules!

I'm in Somerville and naively thought it wouldn't be that long by train. Ten stops or so from Davis? About how long would that take?
posted by ignignokt at 10:41 AM on April 10, 2009

It's not that far. Half an hour? But those of us who live in the enlightened Northern Republics rarely venture down into the lands of the Necromancer.
posted by grobstein at 11:02 AM on April 10, 2009

No, it's not that far away, barring public transit fail. I'm just pretty lazy.
posted by nat at 12:09 PM on April 10, 2009

I can come! It's been too long since I did drunk boardgaming.
posted by Countess Elena at 4:11 PM on April 10, 2009

Also, I'm going to J. Cannibal's Feast of Flesh! at the Coolidge Corner in Brookline at midnight or so. They're screening Cemetery Man, and punk rockers Vagiant will play and there's a macabre burlesque by Black Cat Burlesque. Deets are here.

Aw, Settlers! Can't make it, but have fun.

I've put my cell # in my profile (call and text only) and am wearing dark cords and a purple shirt.

Changed my mind. I'll be there.
posted by mkb at 2:09 PM on April 11, 2009

Sorry to say I cannot make it. Please draw extra pictures of butts for me if a Broken Picture Telephone game is started.

I posted some photos--I'm terrible with names, so please be sure to add tags as appropriate.

What a fun night! I really enjoyed the BPT and Settlers (now that I have the hang of them ;-) )Sorry for not posting sooner, but the hotel computer has a dodgy connection.

Unfamiliar faces, many smiles, wait a minute Cornwalls has tables?, great pictures. So wish I had been there.
posted by Plutor at 7:36 AM on April 13, 2009

That was pretty kick ass! I missed some of the completed BPT games, so I hope they get posted, too.
posted by ignignokt at 8:21 AM on April 13, 2009

That was so much fun - I had to leave early to get to a birthday thing and I hated to go... we should do it again, because that drawing game is fantastic!
posted by moxiedoll at 5:00 PM on April 13, 2009

After Admiral Haddock's excellent photos (thanks Admiral!), I'm certainly not going to show my p&s's pathetic attempts... But I did take a photo of one great BPT picture that captures the spirit of this meetup very well, I think.
posted by of strange foe at 7:32 PM on April 13, 2009

That drawing game was so insanely great.

I love the BPT picture. Clearly it is an illustration of that old cliche:

Pretty ladies love young nerds, but old nerds are confused by dog kisses.
posted by moxiedoll at 8:36 PM on April 14, 2009

Yeah, did anyone save that whole thing? I'd love to see it scanned in.
posted by Plutor at 4:06 AM on April 15, 2009

That really was a lot of fun and I'd love to do it again. I know someone saved all the drawings with the intention of scanning... possibly nat?
posted by Metroid Baby at 8:36 AM on April 15, 2009

Yep. I passed the drawings on to em who has a scanner. Look for them soon.
posted by nat at 1:55 PM on April 15, 2009

Ah phoo, looks like we managed to lose the drawings. We'll just have to play again and get pictures this time!
