slightly longer notice Melbourne meetup?

not only did I miss the short-notice meetup last friday, but we have new folks in town who also didn't make it along.

so who's up for a few pleasant ales (or your other drinks of choice) in the next couple of weeks?

I'll suggest workshop on friday the 22nd - not because I'm particularly wedded to that plan, but the haggling has to start somewhere and the venue seems to have worked well for our last couple of meetups.

anyone?

jezus, are you from Melbourne or Adelaide? Everyone know Melburnites is spelt without an ‘o’.

spent my childhood in adelaide, but I'm actually from canberra... which might explain a few things...

i'm gonna be in melburne next week (10th-17th May, more or less) and possibly maybe a few days of the week after that.

OK, how about the 15th or 16th then?
posted by russm at 10:33 PM on May 6, 2009

friday (15th) would probably be better for me.

Woooo, woooooo. Melbourne meetup wooooo.

Nah, sorry, can't make it.

15th works for me, and it's just about my birthday too, so you can all buy me drinks.

Huzzah!

well, not mattoxic, I suppose.

Bloody piker.
posted by pompomtom at 2:25 AM on May 7, 2009

Yes, I can almost definitely make that.

15th is looking good... works for me, anyways...

15th is my wife's birthday, but I'll try to be there.
posted by robcorr at 4:34 AM on May 7, 2009

Nah, I'll be there with knobs on. Can we try and scam some lucre out of Howie and pretend it's a 10th thing- and go down the pinnies instead?

ah, i see krudd money has turned us into a nation of freeloaders.

heh - we should all dress as sharpies! anybody know where the two authentic cardigan shops are?

Try any Salvos between Moorabbin and Frankston and you should be able to find one...

I always thought the proper salutation was Melburnians, cf. Ubu.

I'll have you know, Ubu, that I was a proud member of this nation of freeloaders long before Mr Krudd came along.

we could use multiple sockpuppets to hit matt up for extra subsidies.

hang about... mattoxic... you know somewhere in town with pinnies? last I saw (apart from the occasional poorly maintained pub machine) was when TimeZone shut down back whenever it was...
posted by russm at 4:36 PM on May 7, 2009

maybe sydney bought them all up...? pub pinnie competitions are as big as pub pool comps these days.
posted by UbuRoivas at 4:59 PM on May 7, 2009

goddamnit - now you've given me a reason to visit sydney...

so it looks like next friday is the go... anyone got a venue suggestion other than Workshop?
posted by russm at 5:14 PM on May 7, 2009

I work til 8.30pm on Fridays, so not sure if I'll be up for it. Would prefer a Saturday.
posted by goshling at 6:02 PM on May 7, 2009

slightly longer notice... but not long enough as I already have plans for next Friday. Have fun!

Down near the bus depot on Nicholson Nth Fitzroy is the last bastion of the noble machine- and I believe they have the odd 40c job (I was last there in '96 so don't rush down). There was a place in Huntingdale- but sadly it recently burnt down.

how about the 15th when ubu can make it (since *everybody* stood him up last time) and then a saturday night for the 10th in another couple of months?
posted by russm at 7:54 PM on May 8, 2009

Friday the 15th would be best for me.
posted by mattoxic at 1:43 AM on May 9, 2009

yes, and you all owe me drinks for standing me up!

I'll be working. Have a good one.

Bother, something just came up, dragging me and pompomtom away. Maybe we can start with a drink at workshop. Relatively early, possibly.
posted by wilful at 6:17 PM on May 11, 2009

does it open before business hours, in the morning?

Awesome. I'm in!

we have cameras!

(only, mine's at home)

Bdave - unless anyone's got a better suggestion, yeah workshop seems to be the go...
posted by russm at 6:17 PM on May 12, 2009

OK, this sounds like fun. As liquorice asked, what time should I start nervously wandering around Workshop trying to figure out who the mefites are?
posted by gooddoggy at 10:57 PM on May 13, 2009

that's good question... I was assuming pompomtom and wilful would be there from 5-ish or so, but they're otherwise occupied tomorrow... I probably won't be along until 6 or 6:30... dunno about anyone else...
posted by russm at 12:12 AM on May 14, 2009

these things normally start about 6ish.

Maybe, maybe not see y'all there.

Stood up again Ubu?
posted by tellurian at 7:36 AM on May 14, 2009

no...not yet...

I should be there ~6-ish... shaved head, red atari t-shirt...

I wonder if I have any chance of convincing my parents-in-law to swap a fancy restaurant dinner for a meetup tonight...
posted by bunglin jones at 8:34 PM on May 14, 2009

i'm sure we'd all agree to going to the fancy restaurant on their credit card, but would the workshop door bitches approve your in-laws' fashion sense?

Is there a strict dress code here? Do I need to do anything special? I mean, I won't be wearing tennis shoes, but I wasn't planning on dressing up either.
posted by mosessis at 11:10 PM on May 14, 2009

not likely to be a problem. melb doesn't have sydney's shitty dresscode attitudes, probably because everybody dresses so well here.
posted by UbuRoivas at 12:02 AM on May 15, 2009

Is there a strict dress code here?

not in the slightest. I'm in jeans, some ratty old trainers, and a t-shirt.
posted by russm at 12:16 AM on May 15, 2009

i'm leaving in about 20 minutes. Be there at 7ish.
posted by bdave at 1:30 AM on May 15, 2009

That was great fun. It was lovely to meet you all.
posted by mosessis at 7:11 PM on May 15, 2009

true!

as an aside, there was surprisingly little talk about the site, compared with other meetups i've been to. at least, as far as i noticed.

yeah, it was a good turnout and a good night... nice to meet y'all...

but we really do need to find somewhere not quite so loud...

oh look at that we are having another one soon ... thanks russ.
posted by nomis at 6:30 PM on May 18, 2009

russm: here was that site i was talking about - tried to fpp it but we collectively killed their server so it was deleted, not once, but twice! shame, really: much promise for fun & seriousness in equal measure.

and yeh, the noise was probably a factor in less site-talk. if you have a bunch of ppl around a table in a quiet venue, in order to find common conversational ground it often turns to "so, did everybody see when username flamed out?".

when you can only hear the person next to you, and only if they are speaking directly to you, it's probably more like regular conversation.

ubu: yeah, that is cool...

oh, i thought you'd been permabanned, turgo.
posted by UbuRoivas at 2:43 AM on May 20, 2009

a temporary ban is like telling a person they shouldn't drink so much. it only makes them resentful.
posted by turgid dahlia at 2:51 AM on May 20, 2009

so you did get tempobanned, then?
