Request canceled or ignored by serverServer busy or unable to fulfill request.

I'm getting a lot of these today. Is it my ISP or something else? Anybody else?

I recall within the last couple of days Matt mentioning that he's reworking a lot of the database queries. I'd search for the thread, but it keeps timing out, y'know. :)

Matt mentioned it here

It's simply too many people making too many requests at once. I have to do a lot more optimization to handle the ever increasing load of visitors.

Matt, are you maxed out on ram on the box? Can we pitch in?
posted by machaus at 2:45 PM on February 8, 2002

Yeah, I haven't got any spare cash, but I could probably lay my hands on a gig or so of RAM. Maybe even a faster processor or two (I think I have a couple of PIII 733's that aren't needed).

Matt, are you up for hardware donations? Will the server support a faster CPU?

I was encouraging Matt to do a server drive, since from the sounds of it, a new box may be in order to improve performance significantly and scale as we grow. Who's up for an old-fashioned Server Drive? Yee-haw! Or maybe we can get someone to pitch in? Wouldn't Dell or IBM like to donate a box? I know times are rough, but think of the good-will of such a gesture. Anyone have any connections out there?

We could have a bake sale.

Or a wank-a-thon. Heh. I'm going door-to-door to collect my pledges right now.

The bank collector called and the orphanage is going to be repossed by sunday unless we kids come up with $2,000. I know! Let's throw a barn dance and save the day!

I have 2Gb of ram in 133Mhz DIMM sticks, but I need a new dual processor motherboard with processors. I've looked at some high end dual 1.5Ghz AMD setups, and I think a full blow computer could cost up to 2k, but a mobo + procs would probably be less than a grand. Dunno if I need to replace all my RAM with that new DRAMM crap though.

I'm asking around for hardware donations.

I'd gladly pitch in a fifty if there were a seperate paypal account for hardware. Not that we demand fiscal oversight on MetaFilter donations, just that it's nice to have a tangible sense where your money is going. "That IC on the mobo was all because of me, baby!"

You're going to want DDR for the box to really hit its stride. You can get away with reusing what you've got, but replacing it would probably be the next hardware upgrade you'll want to take on.

My offer still stands to donate one whole CPU if someone will pony for the board and other processor. I've got memory out the yang on hand but it's all PC133, so it's of no use as a donation.

Matt, I have a semi-insider at Dell, and a higher-up at my company who is a fan of MeFi and a regular reader although not a contributor, who also has the authority to open the purse strings a bit.

Would you be averse to some ad space in trade for a server? Maybe a "sponsored by Company X" at the bottom? I know it's one of those "Ewww, Matt sold his soul" kind of things, but a little space on the front page might help me swing the deal. Let me know what's kosher with you and I'll push a proposal as far as I can.

Wow, even after that wank-a-thon thing? ;)
