No hotlinking to images, please. February 8, 2002 4:17 PM   Subscribe

funny. i get snarked at for hotlinking an image, but i don't see any snarking for just plain cut and pasting content.

maybe i'm just not looking hard enough, but i don't see a difference.

Cutting and pasting doesn't pull bandwidth from a server that is not yours. As one of the snarkers, my only issue is that posting an image on MeFi is going to cause a lot of traffic to that server. Links are traffic intensive enough but an image loads every time the page loads. If it's your server, or one that you pay to use, fine. If it's not, you could be sapping someone's precious traffic quota and, in an extreme case, costing them money just because you don't take the time to copy the image to your server space.

oh i know that, but as i said before, i don't think 4 or 5 hits on a 3k image is going to hurt anyone. and anyone who's going to see that image is more than likely going to visit her site. so i think the small amount of bandwidth would be worth any visitors she'd get.

i think search engines would have more impact on her than my silly little live journal.

but i do see your point. let's go get some pancakes.

So certain are you.

Did you ask her?

Do you know how many hits on that image there were as a result of your link?

If it had happened to me, I would have been more than a bit annoyed.

"So certain are you."

jcterminal: if Meg Pickard wants people to leech bandwidth, then why would she be replacing images on her site to counter act it?

"if Meg Pickard wants people to leech bandwidth, then why would she be replacing images on her site to counter act it?"

boredom!

that's why i occasionally change my library of aim buddies into small snippets of man/watermelon porn.

what other reason COULD there be?
