MeFi's own eotvos is organizing a tenth anniversary meetup in Antarctica. We have officially conquered this planet.

Anyone know anyone currently on the ISS?

Also, doesn't this now give Antarctica the highest 10th anniversary meetup attendance per capita?

Sorry Item, I was in a car accident in which my car was totalled, and I can't afford the train + bus fare to get to Chicago. Thanks for making me feel pathetic though!

We could have a meetup on one of those floating ship "countries," except they know we're all like LOLBERTARIAN around here.

> We could have a meetup on one of those floating ship "countries,"

Problem is most of those are still in the drydocks, so it would probably be more like hanging out in jersey...

All well and good, but what happened to that RPM project, you lagasses at the pole? Huh? Out with it!

This raised the question for me of what time zone Antarctica occupies. Of course, the internet had an answer.

Item: "No problem!

sorry
"

it's okay, that was tongue-in-cheek. ;) I am really disappointed that I can't go, though.

I would rather rule the group that rules the planet. How much for cabal membership again?

Jesus Christ. There is no cabal.

check your mefimail. Hope you've got adequate funds in the bank.

I'm ashamed for the country of my birth that there is no meet-up in Iceland.

I bet it's Delaware's fault.

No meet-up in Chile
and traitorous signal is going to Argentina's.

We have people in Antarctica? We have people in Antartica.

I'll ship a few cases of black paint down, someone in the cabal needs to check our Google Maps insiders for the next satellite fly-by. I want MeFi shout outs in Antarctica, stat.

And at the height of the Austral winter no less. eotvos if I had a Paypal account I would refund your $5.00.

Someone point eotvos to the shoutout sheets that fandango_matt put together a while back. I's do it but I can't remember where they are, and anyway I'm off to bed in a minute.

Europe seems terribly poorly represented. Nothing in Spain, France, Germany, any of the low countries. Here in Southern Spain, my nearest meet is in London - 1616km away as the crow flies (according to Wolfram|Alpha). Shame...

Well, if there's a meetup in Argentina, then the fake meetup on the Appalachian Trail is unneccessary now, no?

I think a lot of the Dutch mefites are actually going to the London meetup.
posted by atrazine at 12:44 AM on July 4, 2009

benzo8 I think this is the occasion to have a bigger european meetup.
I got a bit tired of the Dutch meetups that tend to be 2 - 3 people. So I tried to organise a meetup for the whole of europe in Berlin. When that fizzled I joined the London meetup.
Short version: join us in London. I'm sure you can crash on some local mefites couch.
although I wish we could all convene in Granada

Is it just me, or is that meetup no longer scheduled/showing up on the map?

It's not just you. Over in the official thread it says:

[Updated the location to the South Pole, but Google Maps is having trouble placing a marker.]

I don't know what conditions are like at the pole (besides cold even for a Canadian I'm guessing) or whether station members are allowed to go outside but if they can it would be very awesome for them to make a quick trip around the pole during the meet up there by allowing us to claim a meet up in every longitude. IE: an atomic around the world meet up.
