omg omg omg I just got invited to a party in NJ that weekend. Now I just need a job so I can afford the trip...

I suggest an afterparty in lower Manhattan, because lower Manhattan is awesome.

Barring that, how about the beergarden in Astoria?

Anything but midtown.
posted by Afroblanco at 3:04 PM on July 23, 2009

Afroblanco, if it's lower Manhattan you want, maybe one of the places on Pearl Street, like Ulysses Folk House? Shouldn't be too crowded on a Sunday night and they have tables outside on the cobblestone, traffic-free Stone Street side of the bar.

The only downside I can think of is that it can be a pain in the ass getting a cab from there at the end of the night.

I vote for Manhattan, because Astoria is a schlep. So what if I might not be going?

omg d, jr! ♥summerstage♥

Say hello to Lou Barlow for me!

(okay, I don't actually know Lou Barlow. I just saw him play an acoustic set last night that was GREAT.)

Well, for lower Manhattan, there's kind of a secret bar over on C. Yeah, I know, alphabet city is only marginally more accessible than Astoria. But this place is the bestest -- pool table, darts, quality jukebox, outdoor garden, room to move around, never crowded. Hoegarden on tap. It's unmarked and I don't even think it has a name, but I've been going there for years. It's kind of a 'neighborhood' place, but on a Sunday I'm sure they'll appreciate the business.

Other places, let's see.

Manitoba's is always a favorite. They have air hockey. AIR! HOCKEY! Also, shouldn't be too packed on a Sunday. Yeah, we know all about this place and their awesome fucking jukebox and punk rock pedigree. You don't want to hear about it.

Revival has never failed us.

I'm sure I'll think of a few others.

I say we all grab a jug and go to someone's house. I know I will be exhausted and drunk when the show is over. Also, has anyone been to a well-attended Summerstage show? They are not doing ticket pre-distribution last time I checked, but this show could get crowded, and I missed Dino the last few times they were in town so I am getting there and getting in line early.
posted by vrakatar at 12:07 AM on July 24, 2009

Revival was shut down (maybe temporarily?) by the health department earlier this week.
posted by ocherdraco at 3:53 AM on July 24, 2009

Astoria is really far for Brooklynites.

....dude, the G or the B-61 bus could get you there pretty quick.

...For the record, I'm interested in the after-party element -- that may be the day I've planned a stoop sale and may be tied up during the day. (We are now up to roommate #4 I've had in this apartment, and each one has left things behind. I need to get rid of 4 peoples' worth of crap I never owned to begin with.)

Anyone know if a Dinosaur Jr show is kid-friendly? Our 7 year old niece will be staying with us that week (in fact that's her last day before my wife flies her back to Detroit on Monday).

And if Uncle Jared's done a good job of entertaining her for the day, her aunt may just let him participate in the afterparty stuff.
posted by JaredSeth at 5:51 AM on July 24, 2009

I could probably host like 10-20 people at my place, but I'd need to know in advance how many people were coming so that I could adequately prepare.

Darn. Moving that weekend, don't think I can make this one.
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 6:58 AM on July 24, 2009

this sounds awesome. what do you have to do to go to the dinosaur jr show? just show up and wait on line or what?
posted by shmegegge at 8:12 AM on July 24, 2009

I can't think of any reason why the show would be not safe for kids. It will be loud and crowded though, kids might hate it.

Showing up and waiting in line seems to be the method, shmeg.

Maybe I'll manage to make it to this one. I was at a family reunion in Colorado during the last one :(

Now that I think on it, I realize that the day before I am taking over a pal's house and dog while he goes on vacation, so after the show I'll have to hustle over there and take the beastie outside, alas.

I'm not sure that you can ever describe the G or the B-61 as quick. Especially since either would require a transfer to get to a reasonable walking distance of the beer garden.

Not if you live in any part of Brooklyn that isn't Park Slope/Williamsburg/hipsterville.

I'll be working until 7 that evening. I'll be on a bike (work is in red hook, which is more or less inaccessible by any other means), so I'd appreciate a not-Astoria location.

One of my beefs about Revival were/are the broken seats.....and this is New York! Variety!

That said, whether or not I come by the after party will depend on how I feel.
posted by brujita at 11:58 PM on July 25, 2009

Well, I would like to have everybody over at my place at some point, but this event may not be right for it.

First off, we'd be kind of limited for space. Now, most people here know me, and know that I am a rather disreputable individual with little redeeming social value. So for the most part, we don't have to worry about people actually showing up. However, there are a few who don't know me yet, and won't think twice about venturing into my evil lair. And there's the possibility (however remote) that these people will number more than the 10-20 that my evil lair can comfortably accommodate.

Second, it's a Sunday. And I have to admit this is probably the bigger reason. I can have people over on a Sunday, but pretty much everyone would have to clear out around 11 so that I don't anger my neighbors -- who are already a bit peeved about the experiments and evil robots and sharks with frickin' lasers.

So I think I'll have to suggest the secret bar on C, unless you guys are cool with leaving by 11 and being fewer than 20. But this does give me an idea -- I think I would like to have an opportunity for capturing more test subjects happy fun end-of-summer shindig at my place, probably some time in August.

More on this later.
posted by Afroblanco at 9:35 AM on July 26, 2009

So, Afroblanco, what is the actual location of this seekrit bar? Because we can't go there if we can't find it.

Hello New York City.

I may be in town for this.

And for the rest of that week.

I'm not 100% certain of my plans yet, but there it is.

Er so wait, is this happening at someone's house or at Dinosaur Jr? Or is it the afterparty that's going to be at someone's house?
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 7:03 AM on July 28, 2009

Meetup part one is at Dinosaur, Jr.

Meetup part two is at a place yet to be determined. Should probably be somewhere in Manhattan that is easily accessible by subway from Brooklyn and Queens.
posted by ocherdraco at 8:14 AM on July 28, 2009

Yeah, and while I can't play for part 2, may I suggest 151 on the LES (newpotato's place) or an old fave of mine, Dusk, which is down around w 24th or 25th and 7th ave.
posted by vrakatar at 8:26 AM on July 28, 2009

Hell with the move, I'm in for Dino Jr, if not the afterparty.
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 11:04 AM on July 28, 2009

Okay, the secret bar over on C actually DOES have a name. Apparently it's called C Bar, and it's on C between 8th and 9th. Good place, chill, room enough for everybody.

151 is a decent place, but it's kinda small and kinda loud. We've had meetups there before and it was just so-so.

Anyway, I'm down for the afterparty if you all still want to have one. Probably won't be at the show, because it sounds like a lot of hot sweaty waiting in line and standing still for hours. Yuck.

C Bar is pretty much unmarked from the outside. The only thing that gives it away is a small Guinness sign in the window. Otherwise it looks kind of like an empty storefront.

So wait, it's unmarked but for a Guinness sign? Is there a street number or something? East or west? I can't find it on street view.
Given that that OMGMeetups thread revealed that a bunch of mefites actually show up only to chicken out before going into a meetup, I'm picturing a potential fiasco here....Then again, I guess this will weed out the unresourceful.

Yeah, it didn't used to be like that. I think the recession holds the smoking gun on this one. That and the fact that I've rarely ever seen any actual people in that bar.

But still, good place, no? I thought the whole thing was very meetup-friendly. They didn't even seem to mind our locust-like descent on the place. I'd say it was an all-around win.
