Birmingham, AL: Let's watch some baseball and call it a meetup.
Who wants to watch the hometown team in the playoffs on Friday night (Sept 11)? The baseball game starts at 7, and tickets are $10 (field box), $8 (reg box), or $7 (gen admission), depending on where we want to sit.

The local Birmingham baseball team is, apparently, the Barons; named after the famous Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. In addition to honoring the players of those times, the current Barons are the AA-level minor league club for the Chicago White Sox. As an interesting historical note, the original field where the Birmingham Black Barons played is still standing, and has been evaluated to be the oldest in the country.
Go Barons!
Sorry if this is common knowledge to the people of Birmingham; I knew about the Negro League team, and looked up what the current one was.

The Black Barons team was formed in 1920 - the (plain old) Barons have been playing under the name since 1908 (prior to that year they were known as the Vulcanites).

Elizard and I are so there.
We usually get the cheap tix and then stand behind the seats along the first base line where the smoking section is. It's also near the beer.
Shall we meet at the park, or y'all wanna get some Tortuga's deep-dish Pizza of Awesomeness first?

Side note: Rickwood Field, the oldest standing baseball field in the country (referenced above), is in the process of being renovated and turned into a Negro League museum. Also, Willie Mays was a Baron. So was Frank Thomas. Barons rule. Yay baseball!

Neat!
Also, Birmingham is sister city to the Czech city Plzeň, which lends its name to the pilsner style of beers.

Yay Birmingham! Yay Alabama!
(Though the New York meetup next week is going to be awesome, this is one of those times when I wish I could be home. Baseball and metafilter: now that's a combination.)

I regret to say that I will probably not be making this one. I should be able to catch you guys next time, though.

I'd be there if I was in the 'ham, for sure, and I couldn't give a rat's ass about baseball.
Y'all have fun!

Whee! That was fun. Good pizza, bad baseball (Did the Barons stink on ice or what? Jeez...), fireworks, and excellent company. Elizard and I had much fun, drank too much, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
