Austin Meet-up at flying saucer?
Anyone want to do a meet-up sometime at the flying saucer? Late saturday or sunday is best for me as I still have my apprenticeship on saturdays.

Yes, can only assume that flying saucer. This sounds fun.

Sounds good to me. Plus we've got money from the 10 year party that needs to be spent. Somebody light up the batmonkey signal!

I don't get out much so I've never heard of the Flying Saucer (among hundreds of other places. Nice menu, the Sheboygan Side-by-Side looks great. A Sunday afternoon would work great for me.

I'm game. I was actually thinking of starting a meetup thread sometime but hadn't gotten around to it yet. When are we going to do this, next weekend?

Hey, there's a couple of bocce courts at the Triangle. Does anyone have a bocce set? I go to there for the Wednesday farmers' market from time to time and recall that there's a bocce set available somewhere in the Triangle.
I don't want to talk shit, but apparently I'm a Hot Bocce Player (I've been honing my skillz at the Shuck Shack). I'm probably going to be getting a full ride scholarship on bocce for next semester, so if anyone wants to show up and get their ass kicked by a (soon to be) pro, feel free. Better bring your A-game.

I'd be interested. I've only been on trivia nights but it fills up fast. 10pm on a Tuesday can mean standing room only. Parking usually isn't a problem though, with the garage at the triangle.
Sunday is TX pint night, $2.75 and Saturdays will likely be full of UT sports fans.

Can we do something not-so-late on Sunday for those who have somewhere to be early Monday? I'm thinking 6:00pm or earlier for a start time.

djduckie: Does anyone know if we can call ahead?
I'm pretty sure it would be no problem to call, but in my experience it's not all that hard to find a table for a group of 5-10 people unless there's something in particular going on (trivia, UT game, etc).
I go to the Saucer more frequently than I'd like to, since a number of my friends are in the drinking club thing that they have (drink 200 beers, get a plate on the wall with your name on it and a "free" party for you and your friends -- free in quotes because you're spending well over a thousand dollars on beer over the course of the 200). I generally think that the staff and a sizeable portion of the clientele are kind of jerkish and that the atmosphere is sort of corporate-douchey. And the guy that runs the trivia is a fucking moron. And the beer list is too long and way too heavy on European imports rather than craft-brewed American beers.
Overall, though, I guess it's okay. Kind of pricey. Mostly, I just get annoyed when my friends say "Drinks at the Flying Saucer!" because it means that I have to drive all the way up there while they just have to walk or bus for a couple minutes.
It's probably a really good place for a meetup, though, since they have a fair amount of space and generally seem pretty crowd friendly. I'm still game, just letting you know my impressions of the place.

As a corporate douche, I am incredibly offended.
Weekends are going to by tricksy now that football season is upon us. Would there be any interest in a weekday meetup? I don't have strong feelings about it.

I have no problems with The Flying Saucer, but I'd like to point out that nobody can remotely classify Dog and Duck as corporate-douchey. Just sayin'. I think a few meetups have been done here, so if the venue is played out by now, it ain't no thang. Disclaimer: I'm currently studying at the bar here now. Well, taking a break from studying just to check this thread, then it's back to the books.

I'm pretty sure you get the bocce balls from Flipnotics, but I could be wrong. I'll go anywhere (but probably complain about it).

Well i just saw that flying saucer had a huge beer menu and i was kind of interested in seeing if they did beer flights so i could try a bunch of different types of beer, that an i wanted to meet some new people. I'm no bocce champ but i do enjoy play it. All that said i am totally okay with a venue change if the place i picked totally sucks.

Nah, it doesn't totally suck -- if you haven't been there, it's worth checking out. They do have a huge beer menu and they have flights, as I recall, though I've never gotten one. I'm a fan of the Dog and Duck, but maybe for next time.

This is about 2 minutes from my house, so if I don't show up, it's just because I'm having a particularly misanthropic day. Sunday afternoon works perfectly, time-wise.

djduckie sent me a personalized invite via Mefimail, but I don't think we'll be able to make it this time - a friend is debuting his new home brew on Saturday and I doubt I'll be awake Sunday morning.
That said, me and mudddude will be up in Austin on October 3rd for an ACL after-show. We are probably looking for somewhere to hang out pre-show and just plain -show, as we're not going to ACL.

You can't tell what will be on in this market until a few days beforehand (I use this site).
If they're not on TV in Austin, I may ask that the Metatalk Players act out the game with me.

That place usually has a waiting list spilling out into the parking lot. I think somewhere that the volume is below 90 decibels and has space available would trump raw beer selection, since we'd ostensibly be getting together to talk. I'd say that was my main complaint about the last 2 places -- the piped-in music was loud enough to hinder my being able to hear very well, so somewhere quiet and with a reasonably good selection of food & beverages would be my preference.

Flying Saucer is usually quite empty and talk-able in the early afternoon on Sundays. And it's Texas pint day. Independence, (512), Real Ale, here I come.

Look for the table of about 8:1 glasses to non glasses wearing faces. I realize this may be a contentious claim, but I have anecdotal evidence.
Also I've got those "Are you from the Internet?" signs from the 10th still kicking around somewhere, though no promises on being early...
