Desuetude Does Dallas... er... Houston November 18, 2009 2:56 PM   Subscribe

Hey Houston: desuetude is coming to town at the beginning of December. Let's get together so she can teach you how to pronounce her username!

She's arriving on the afternoon of the 5th and departing the morning of the 10th. She can correct me, but it looks like Tuesday is the only day that is absolutely out for a meetup that wont keep everyone up past their bedtimes.

Suggestions for a cool evening meetup place?

Neato. Anvil, Alice's Tall Texan, Brasil, Marfreless? [I was going to make an alphabet of suggestions but I apparently forgot what comes after 'b' and/or lost steam.

Marfreless? Is there going to be some dry-humping going on?* Because I may make the drive to Houston for that.

*Paging WolfDaddy.

Hell, man, whatever it takes for a ColdChef-WolfDaddy reunion.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I feel compelled to point out that things have mellowed at Marfreless since the days of oil men taking their special extra-marital lady friends for daytime romps upstairs. (Which, by the by, I only have on rumor and intrigue.) It's just a cool mellow bar now. There's not even making out upstairs anymore. I didn't even link to their website because it (falsely) claims a "romantic atmosphere." For the haters, there's beer served in chalices at Alice's. (Or whatever else people want to do.)

Heh. Glad to see that greekphilosophy hasn't lost his Most Welcoming Mefite status since leaving Philly. I'm all awwwww ZOMG a meetup MeTa just for meeeee? (And I don't even talk like that!)

I could tell you how to pronounce her username, but I'm going to let you find out for yourselves.

hint: it's not pronounced desjardins.

I've changed my mind. ColdChef should stay at a distance because it cracks my shit up to hear "Hello ColdChef, this is WolfDaddy."
posted by *s at 6:39 PM on November 18, 2009

We're in Texas, desjardins. We can do French. It just doesn't sound like French. Some call it "Creole" - I call it Frexan. There's a road near my house - Vauthier - which is pronounced "Vo-shay." So I'm thinking desjardins would come out "daey, zhowr, dayunz."

I dunno about you, but I've always pronounced it "Goddamn, that chick is fucking awesome."

It's pronounced "De-sooey-toody". Don't tell me otherwise.

While you guys dream up the location, I only care about the date - I'll come if it is Tuesday or Wednesday (8 or 9). I'll also be in town, for work, based near the Galleria.

Help me enjoy Houston! Good food and good company is good stuff.
posted by whatzit at 11:35 PM on November 18, 2009

Ooh, then let's aim for Wednesday, December 9 so that we get both desuetude and whatzit! After work with sufficient time for people to be there: 8pm sound good to people for a nosh and a drink somewhere fun?
posted by greekphilosophy at 1:09 AM on November 19, 2009

8:00 is approximately 30 minutes before my bedtime but I'll do my best to stay up late. Looking forward to it.
posted by pomegranate at 4:44 AM on November 19, 2009

Lurve good food and good drinks. If dry-humping is required at our chosen venue, I claim greekphilosophy as my partner, though.
posted by desuetude at 8:34 AM on November 19, 2009

Can I watch?

greekphilosophy is really very pretty
posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 11:31 AM on November 19, 2009

In terms of *s's suggestions, I'm most interested in Brasil and Anvil.

I also liked Ruggles Green when I went there a couple weeks ago. (And I know this isn't the obnoxious namedropping thread, but I totally saw Selma Blair there.) They have a nice patio, and a pretty relaxed interior, so that a crowd of us showing up in dribs and drabs wouldn't be a problem. But it looks like a meetup wouldn't be a problem at most of the other places either.

Of course, I'm also a fan of Chuy's. Though, I kind of remember some of you turning your noses up at Chuy's.

And whether the rest of you are coming or not, I'm taking desuetude to House of Pies Guys.
posted by greekphilosophy at 12:54 PM on November 19, 2009

I still haven't been to Anvil! Or we could try to meet at Beaver's like last time and hope everyone's plans don't all go up in flames at the last minute again.
posted by casarkos at 3:24 PM on November 19, 2009

Sorry I'm late to the thread. Did I miss the dry-humping pie guy house of anvil green? And did ColdChef mention a ball gown?

At any rate, I'm down for what/whenever. I'm easy.

But not cheap
posted by WolfDaddy at 6:34 PM on November 19, 2009

Oh I'm in if I'm not working! Down for what/whenever too.
posted by dog food sugar at 6:41 PM on November 19, 2009

Ok, to summarize: Wednesday, December 9, 8 p.m. (ballgowns, dry humping, and WolfDaddy's cheapness and/or easiness to be determined later)? In the interest of getting something on the books, can we say Anvil, and if people want food, they can work it on the fly (Anvil also has some food)?

I like you, greekphilosophy, but am perplexed by your attachment to Chuy's, unless you like to reminisce about how sweet and naive a time it was when the Bush twins got busted for underage drinking at the Chuy's in Austin and that was a Big Deal. And I guess, who doesn't?
posted by *s at 9:47 AM on November 20, 2009

Actually, I think my attachment is magnified by the fact that I can't eat wheat anymore, so I covet just about anything wrapped in a tortilla. Last night I ordered a black bean burger at Baba Yega, and I was really just interested in the whole wheat bun. (And damnit, I ate that whole bun, over the protests of my date AND the waiter. And I loved it.)

I salivate any time I pass a Taco Cabana. So it isn't about quality, really. It's just about filling tortillas with as many calories as possible and then drenching it with sauce and cheese. And let's remember that I've just spent five years north of the Mason-Dixon line. And three of those years were in a small town in New Jersey, where they consider a "burrito" to include things like steamed carrots and cauliflower. Seriously, people.

Sounds like a good plan to me, *s. And Anvil is centrally located to all sorts of other food in case it doesn't offer anything especially enticing to our assembly.

I will be there. My first meet-up.

I'll try to make it. I need to bring pomegranate some purses anyway.

I need to bring pomegranate some purses anyway.

I read this as "I need to pomegranate some purses anyway," wondered if it was some sort of crazy euphemism, and wanted [whatever it was] anyway.
posted by desuetude at 3:55 PM on December 1, 2009

Woah Nellie this is turning into a seious meetup! Can't wait!

I will pomegranate all your purses desuetude. Unless it I a euphemism for... Well... You know...
posted by greekphilosophy at 6:10 PM on December 1, 2009

I'll take a purse or two from pretty much anyone.* If by "purses," you mean dry-humping. Or vodka.

*And you damn well better show up. It's SO lame to say you're coming and then write some ridiculous excuse..."oh, I had a ballgown emergency/sudden allergy to cornchips/attack of the vapors and can't make it."..on this thread an hour into the event.
Get over it. We're zitty, old, fat, boring, on Xanex, terrible spellers, 7-year lurkers, whatever. We all sit around at meetups and stare at our smartphones. Some jackass showed up at a recent Houston meetup and totally dominated the conversation and he hadn't even bothered to join Metafilter - if he can make it, you sure as hell can. I guarantee you we will LOVE you. And most likely not call you a jackass. Maybe even make eye contact and keep our smartphones in our purses, provided Mr. Bill brings enough of them.

See you soon!

If people are going to trade dry-humping for purses, it's gonna be the Best Houston Meetup Evar.

I'll settle for a hug from pomegranate and anybody else who cares to give one though. I'm still all verklempt from the bagels, pie and friendly checkup visits after Amy's death. Realizing that People Do Care makes such a difference.
posted by mrbill at 8:50 PM on December 2, 2009

Garrison Keillor is going to be in town on the 9th. Forget the purses. I'll bring the duct tape, someone bring a spiky club...
posted by greekphilosophy at 1:46 PM on December 3, 2009

In the spirit of all this camaraderie and dry-humping...
Any of you passing through the Galleria area and want to go together?

(I have no idea where this place is or how to get around Houston, but I'll find a way there regardless.)
posted by whatzit at 12:15 PM on December 4, 2009

I am planning to pick desuetude up, and we can zip over to grab you if you'd like whatzit! I'll be leaving from work in Galveston at 6, and barring freak weather like what we're having today, I should be up to get her by 7. We can zip over to get you in the Galleria and still be to Anvil by 7:30 or 8 to put on our fedoras and look conspicuous in a corner.

greekphilosophy: That'd be awesome! I get to join the pre-party! I'll send you a email with the relevant stuff :-)

Am I hearing correctly that it is fucking snowing in Houston?
posted by desuetude at 2:34 PM on December 4, 2009

It's true. Snow. Today. But don't worry, by the time you get here it'll be 70 degrees again. That's how we roll here: freaky ass weather.

Anyone need a ride in from the hinterlands of Katy? I'll try not to dry hump your ballgown. Too much.
posted by Mamapotomus at 7:08 AM on December 9, 2009

Awesome - according to Street View, it looks like BJ's Oldies a few doors down (a place where Amy bought many bits of furniture) has gone out of business, and they have a huge parking lot.
posted by mrbill at 2:35 PM on December 9, 2009

mrbill -- I think BJ's Oldies is still around, but in a different location down the block and/or across the street. It's down with all the other old-stuff shops between Dunleavy and Woodhead, I believe.
