Brooklyn meetup at Speak Low January 2, 2010 7:13 AM   Subscribe

I'm leaving NYC for Denver and I want to call a meetup before I go. It'll be in Brooklyn!

I've sort of casually discussed having it at this place for awhile, but I think it's time to do it before I go. It'll be at Speak Low in DUMBO, easily accessible from the A, C or F. There is no signage outside, but it's located inside of Rice. Just go down the steps next to the take out window.

They specialize in delicious cocktails and from 5-7 they're all half off! If there's a large enough interest here I can talk with the people at the bar and see if they'd be interested in extending the happy hour for us. Regardless, I will be there at 5, come whenever you're free!

Also, they make the best Dark & Stormy I have ever had in my life. Ever.

It's starting to seem like it. This will be the third Brooklyn meetup in less than two months. Maybe we should just put it on a schedule.

Scrutiny, let us know when you are in Denver and we will have a meetup to welcome you.

I was thinking Thursday, 1/14

fieldtrip - thanks! I plan on leaving nyc on 1/18 and slowly driving across the country. I start work on 2/1, so maybe sometime during the last week in January?

Ick. A Thursday? I wouldn't be able to make it. If you end up settling on a Fri or Sat I'll buy you a farewell drink.

You know I'll be there! Then again, I'm still plotting ways to stop you from moving away.

I will definitely be there regardless of the final date or time, so just tell me when.

I would love to come, and will if i can! I'll keep my eye open for the final date.

Some ex-NYer friends of mine started a community blog that I posted in MeFi projects: Is There Life After New York?. I think there's a Colorado contingent on the site.

fieldtrip: “Scrutiny, let us know when you are in Denver and we will have a meetup to welcome you.”

scrutiny: “fieldtrip - thanks! I plan on leaving nyc on 1/18 and slowly driving across the country. I start work on 2/1, so maybe sometime during the last week in January?”

My excitement about you coming, scrutiny, is just barely compensation for the disappointment of putting off the next meetup - I was actually just about to call one for a few weeks from now, as it's been about a year (well, two months) since we had one here. I guess we can wait until then... somebody should throw about it up on Meta, how about...

Frank Grimes: “Some ex-NYer friends of mine started a community blog that I posted in MeFi projects: Is There Life After New York?. I think there's a Colorado contingent on the site.”

When Bernard DeVoto (a Utah-raised historian) moved away from NYC, all his friends said: "but won't you miss the lights, the parties, the people? Isn't it all so beautiful?"

He replied: "Sure it's beautiful - if you can forget what a hill looks like."

There - posted a thread proposing a Denver meetup. Here's a link, for you weirdos who only peruse metatalk through "Recent Activity."

thanks koeselitz! I'm really excited to meet everyone there!

Concerning the date for this meetup, I'm not free from Friday 1/15 on, but if Friday is a better day for people, we could do it this weekend, Fri 1/8. My schedule is completely open from now till 1/14.

He must not have bicycled to visit his friends in Inwood.

I will make this, friend, and drink myself delirious to numb the pain of losing you and your lovely wife to Denver. Fresh air is overrated.

Ok, I was holding off on the official date for some info from the bar itself, but I've got it now and it turns out to be - unfortunately - irrelevant. So, paying no attention to that bit of info, the consensus seems to be either anytime or Friday works, so let's go with Friday.

Speak Low
5pm-whenever
Friday, 1/8 (that's this weekend)

Happy hour is from 5-7 and all their specialty cocktails are half off ($5), so I will be there at 5!
posted by scrutiny at 5:00 PM on January 4, 2010

Also, the irrelevant bit of info is this (from email correspondence):
The first Thursday of each month all the galleries in DUMBO open up to the public. We extend happy hour until 10
NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!11!!!!!

I will be there, and will drink Dark & Stormies, and will salute you as you head for parts West.

I will be there at 5 on Friday (with a babby). Anyone else getting there early?

This may be just the after work (which for means after 8) kick-off to a lowkey birthday weekend mini extravaganza that I'm looking for.
posted by vrakatar at 9:57 PM on January 4, 2010

Hey, I think I can make this one. Would be able to get there maybe six-ish, I think.
posted by yarrow at 9:32 AM on January 5, 2010

Hmm, with my work schedule I'll probably get there more like 7 ish; if later than that I might have to pass. I don't mind missing out on the happy hour, I just don't want to get there and see no people around =(.

Finally a Brooklyn meet-up I can make! I'll be there.

After-work also means after 8 pm for me, but if someone could MeMail me train directions, I may be in!
posted by TrishaLynn at 11:50 PM on January 5, 2010

I will endeavor to make it. I haven't been to one since the great cortex karaoke adventure.

I *will* make this one, durnit. I can be there at from about 6 - 7. Because then I'm going to a rodeo. I'm serious. A RODEO.
posted by functionequalsform at 4:52 PM on January 7, 2010

I think I'll come to this one unless something else gets in the way. This time I don't want to get as drunk as last time.
posted by fuq at 6:00 PM on January 7, 2010

I will make it, because I keep saying I will attempt to make it and I keep failing.
posted by thejoshu at 9:19 PM on January 7, 2010

....Dammit, I think I may scrape together the funding for this one because I NEED TO HEAR MORE ABOUT THE RODEO.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 10:35 AM on January 8, 2010

I'm in, will be taking the F train from the Flatiron district after 6pm, so, should be there sometime before 7pm.

Just about to head out the door at the office. Hope to be there before 8.

Closest I got was yelling back and forth with vraktar across the subway platform on his way there. If that was any indication of how fun it was, it must have been the best meetup ever.

No fights, hookups, or expulsions?

Also, Scrutiny, don't go!

I have rodeo pics I took specifically for y'all, and will post soon.

Scrutiny! I can't believe I missed this! Because I can't see the sidebar on the iPhone site :( are you going already??

Guys!

Okay. So. Pics, and it did happen.

After stumbling (thanks to jalapeno gimlets and you guys) out of Speak Low, I definitely ate my weight in spicy sausages and drank beer with a straw out of a cup as long as my forearm. We were appx. three rows from the front— close enough to see a youngin' by the name of Shane Proctor take the whole $1 million prize.

But, the best part was a phenomenon called "Mutton Bustin'." They introduced some kids and made them ride SHEEP. Like, just hang on. The little boogars burst through the gates and dang straight if a little girl didn't win it.

There was one spilt drink. On someone. No names will be mentioned.
posted by ihadapony at 5:23 PM on January 10, 2010

At that bar? Year that was me. I spilled it on scrutiny's wife in the narrow window between imbibing my third jalapeno gimlet and making OC take me home NOW NOW NOW because I was a cheap, cheap date that night.
