Dice rolling in Portland OR January 19, 2010 4:27 PM   Subscribe

Portland, OR, it has been too long. I propose a meetup, as I haven't managed to make any since cortex got back from his Meeting Metafilter trip.

While I am of course open to our usual process of assembling at a bar and drinking, I'm also aware that a number of you had a good time getting together at Powell's on Christmas Day and playing games, and as a big fan of games, I think that's a good idea for future meetups as well. If folks are willing, we could plan on something similar for this time, and get together either at Powell's or at Guardian Games, which has a lot of room and I think games for rent. I also own several games, including Arkham Horror, and Settlers of Catan. I know there's enough of us that not everyone could play a single game, unless it was something like Apples to Apples, but I think it would still be fun to have several groups of MeFites in the same area playing games. Thoughts? Ideas? Preferences? Go nuts, and let's work something out.

First, apologies that I still haven't managed to get the photos up from Powell's (and I haven't forgotten your offer, gecko, nor your lens cap).

Secondly, fuck yes meet-up, obviously. I would like, perhaps, to propose a two part (!?) meet-up? Perhaps like late afternoon games then drinks someplace close? Not that I think beer is an integral part of a meet-up or anything...

One of the nice things about Guardian Games is it's really not that far from the Green Dragon, which is one of my favorite bars in Portland.

Is Sunday 7 February too near? You could have a guest if it isn't.

I will be out of town setting up an installation at a gallery mid February (in other news, I am going to have an installation in a gallery!). But if the schedule does not conflict, I would be delighted to meet up, as always.

I haven't made it to too many Portland meetups (they seem to fall everytime I have an out-of-state visitor at my house and I feel too guilty to say 'O hey, haven't seen you in a while. Uh. Yeah. Leaving to go to a MeFi meetup, back later.') but I'd love to go to the next one...
posted by ugf at 10:25 PM on January 19, 2010

Yes! I love meetups. Friday is the best day for me, followed by Thursday, then Saturday. I like Powell's and drinking and am a bit sad that we cannot do the one in the other, because that would be an awesome meetup and I like board games too, even though I can't remember the last time I actually played one. I also support Lutoslawski's proposal of a migratory meetup.
posted by maqsarian at 12:24 AM on January 20, 2010

Oh, and congratulations on your installation, idiopath. That is a cool thing.
posted by maqsarian at 12:25 AM on January 20, 2010

I'm in. Sunday the 7th is fine for me but I'm open to other days too. I think I'll bring my camera this time. A two part meetup with games and then visiting a bar sounds really fun.
posted by dchrssyr at 12:50 PM on January 20, 2010

Is Sunday the 7th too close to mid February for you, idiopath? Would a Sunday work for you, maqsarian? It would be great if we could host an out-of-towner.
posted by Caduceus at 2:37 PM on January 20, 2010

I might have to work on Sunday the 7th, but I'll try my damnedest not to if that's a good date for everybody else. I agree it would be awesome if Sova could come, so please don't eliminate the 7th on my account.
posted by maqsarian at 3:18 PM on January 20, 2010

I was just thinking it was about time to have another meetup.

FWIW, Sunday 2/7 is the Super Bowl and the following weekend (plus 2 days) is Mardi Gras, which probably doesn't impact Portland much but I'll be in New Orleans for it.

Also, I really like the games idea but DAMN the GG website is the worst business site I've seen in quite a while.
posted by turbodog at 3:22 PM on January 20, 2010

I'm guessing that game players overlap less with the Super Bowl than drinkers, so games mid-afternoon during the Game and drinks later might work. We could run with the progressive meetup idea, too - Games at 4, Green Dragon at 6, Lucky Lab at 8, or something like that.
posted by msalt at 3:26 PM on January 20, 2010

Oh please don't mess around with dates for my sake. I'm just saying that I'll be able to come if it's on Sunday, but I'm fine if it's a really bad date for everybody. I might be able to do Monday night also, if that's better (or Saturday as well if you don't mind me "fresh" off a transatlantic flight).
posted by Sova at 3:35 PM on January 20, 2010

Much as I love MeFi meetups (and gaming!), I won't have any idea whether I'll be able to attend until the last minute. It's tax season, you see - my first tax season since I finished my post-bac in accounting last fall - and it would be an understatement to say I've got my hands full at my new job. Plus, even if I'm not actually scheduled to work on the day of the meetup, I'll probably be on call.

If I happen to be available, I will gladly join in. If not, have fun, and I'll see y'all sometime after April 15th.
posted by velvet winter at 7:29 PM on January 20, 2010

You're just worried that if you go, we'll all ask you to do our taxes for us, or answer knotty problems. (Probably right, too.)
posted by msalt at 10:08 AM on January 21, 2010

Heh. Funny you should mention it, msalt, because I actually enjoy solving tax problems, and I don't mind being asked for tax advice at all, especially when it's MeFites doing the asking.

I'm betting that on the day of the meetup, I'll either be 1) at work, or 2) recuperating from work. But we shall see...
posted by velvet winter at 11:29 AM on January 21, 2010

I had to check with some folks, but yeah I will be gone all weekend that week, but don't reschedule on my behalf, I have been making it to every meetup for a while now.

The plural of moose is moose.

(Just so this thread appears in my Recent Activity.)
posted by spherical_perceptions at 5:27 PM on January 22, 2010

Can we have moose (singular or plural) at the meetup?

Have we decided on a time/date yet? Sounds like it's the 7th at 4 at Guardian Games with a boozy follow up at 6 at the Green Dragon. Anyone want to confirm or pick another time?
posted by dchrssyr at 8:19 AM on January 23, 2010

Sounds good to me. The Chocolate Moose is long closed, I think. So I'm down with Guardian Games => Green Dragon. Hopefully no drums in the middle.
posted by msalt at 8:54 PM on January 23, 2010

Keeping in mind that most games we might play will probably take longer than two hours, and putting forward that I'll probably show up an hour or two earlier than 4 if anyone else wants to as well, I'll stick that up on the meetup sidebar.
posted by Caduceus at 6:13 PM on January 24, 2010

I suspect that piggybacking is naughty, but having never done a MeFi meetup before, I wanted to poke my head in on this thread before breaching etiquette and starting a new thread...

My SO and I are going to be in Portland from the 17th to the 27th in order to scope it out as a place to maybe move to later this year, so I was wondering if anybody would be up for drinks or something, within that time period.

We'd really like to get the feel of the place by hanging with people who actually live there...but is that too soon after this meetup on the 7th?
posted by lhall at 7:36 PM on January 24, 2010

I've only ever been to one meetup (shameful for a PDXer) but I'm up for drinks after the game, I think. And by then I will have gotten over my team not being in it.
posted by Nabubrush at 8:10 PM on January 24, 2010

lhall: I for one (and my wife for two) are happy to repeat; if not a formal meetup, we can use this topic to arrange something casual. Also, please feel free to memail any specific questions.

I shall be there, though I see from the map that it's close to Burnside skatepark, so I might make a pilgramage first.

Yeah, so it looks like I definitely can't make it on the 7th; stupid work is stupid. Have fun, you guys.

I may not be there for the game part, but I'm defo in for the drinking part.

Hey, we all make priorities. Don't judge me!
posted by Lutoslawski at 6:17 PM on January 25, 2010

Sorry, maqsarian. But look! lhall wants to have another meetup later in the month. Maybe if we get our shit together you can go to that one.

I, for one, would be happy to attend two meetups in one month.
posted by Caduceus at 6:20 PM on January 25, 2010

Hey, why don't you guys have a meetup later in the month instead? Loads of people can't come on the date chosen, and I totally understand.
posted by Sova at 6:46 PM on January 25, 2010

I was totally joking about the sullenness. And, like a dork, I missed lhall's comment; yeah, if we can do a second thing later in the month to show the Halls how PDX rolls, or whatever the kids say, I'd absolutely be up for that.
posted by maqsarian at 9:59 PM on January 25, 2010

Ok-

So more folks can come to a later Feb meet-up. So I propose this: for some the gaming and meet-up super-enthusiasts, let's go ahead and have a meet-up on the 7th. This will be the minor meet-up, if you will. Like a pre-meet-up-meet-up, perhaps. It's really only appropriate, considering that as the city of MetaFilter's founding, we should take it upon ourselves to establish layers of meet-ups within the meet-upsphere.

No seriously: meet-up minor on the 7th; meet-up major on the 20th or something.

I would also like to call-out the gazillion pdx MeFites who don't come to meet-ups. I know you're out there. I can see you. Come. We will not eat you. First.

Alright, sounds good to me. lhall, you're the guest later on, do you have a day that would work best for you? It sounds like the 18th through the 20th or the 25th to the 27th would work best for other people.

Plus I would be there for drinks and not gaming. . . sadly.

Thursday 18 or Friday 19 would be perfect for us!

Okay, how's Friday the 19th sound? Where do we want this one? Green Dragon is usually pretty decent, and we've had success at the East Burn, too. Either works for me. Both probably require busing or walking if you don't have a car.

I'm still going to the meetup on the 7th, whoever decides to show up. Worst comes to worst I sit around and teach myself how to play Dominion.

Ok the 19th it is then. Pre-meet-up meet-up still happening this weekend, bigger meet-up on the 19th. Where? I'm cool with East Burn, or we could switch it up.
posted by Lutoslawski at 1:26 PM on February 3, 2010

East Burn means I can walk instead of riding my bicycle, and that means I can drink more beer if I so choose. I vote for East Burn.
posted by idiopath at 1:48 PM on February 3, 2010

I'm planning on coming this Saturday (the 7th) - probably only for the drinking part sadly because my computer science homework needs to get done this weekend so a whole day of meet-up isn't justifiable right now.

7th when, where? (I'm interested in drinks more than gaming, and want to watch the Super Bowl.)
posted by msalt at 1:01 PM on February 4, 2010

Okay.

For the 7th: I'll be at Guardian Games around 2ish with a couple different games (and I'm pretty sure you can rent games from them, too). Whoever wants to join me, cool. After, we'll head over to the Green Dragon for drinks, aiming for 6ish; people who only want to do the drinking can show up there and then.

For the 19th: Drinks at East Burn. I might not be able to make it, or might have to leave early, depending on what time we do and how I feel that day about my other possible engagement. Anyone have a preference on time? Is 6 okay?
posted by Caduceus at 9:34 AM on February 5, 2010

6 at East Burn on the 19th. Be there. There will be eating and much drinking. If Cortex comes I'll buy him a scotch.

Well, turns out my aforementioned job circumstances have changed. As in, I have joined the ever-swelling ranks of the unemployed.

The good: Count me in for the East Burn meetup on the 19th.

The bad: it may very well turn out to be my last Portland-area meetup.

I have been unable to find another job that will allow me to stay where I am, and my only other viable option is to move in with my mom until I can get back on my feet. So unless something comes through for me before the end of March - which isn't looking too likely in the middle of this ugly recession - then I will have to leave Portland indefinitely.

So any MeFites who really do want I-Am-Not-Your-Accountant, This-Is-Not-Tax-Advice tips from me should plan on hitting me up at Friday's meetup, since it may be your only chance.

Fun meetup last night! Nice to see so many familiar faces. I had to cut out early, but of course it had nothing to do with the company, which was awesome as always. As I told geckoinpdx, I get awfully jittery in crowded, noisy bars where I'm struggling to hear a good deal of what's being said from across the table. I reached my limit sooner than I had expected.

It was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you, lhall, and I wish you luck on your relocation efforts! Portland is a great city for all kinds of reasons, and I doubt you'll regret moving here. Unless of course you're highly educated (read: "overqualified") and need to, say, get a job that pays enough to live on or something.

Really, I love this city something fierce, except for the dismal job market.

And now, back to last-ditch job-hunting...
