Bay Area Meet-up. February 3, 2010 11:02 PM   Subscribe

SF Meetup - February Edition.

I'm back in town after many months and I'd like to get out and see the bay area crowd this weekend or next ?

A few options I'm thinking of:

1) Jupiter - (East Bay (that's right, I said it)) - right off of bart...beer + pizza = good.

2) The Trappist (timing is tough) or Pacific Brew Co (1 - 4 blocks from BART - (also East Bay, downtown oakland).

3) Somewhere in SF that hasn't been hit in a while by the local crowd - must be BART-able...

Right now I'm leaning towards Jupiter or The Trappist, even though The Trappist is packed...all the time.

Totally down for a meetup, any day but this Friday.

And as much as I support the idea of an East Bay meetup ... I'd be lying if I said I could guarantee my presence.
posted by Afroblanco at 11:15 PM on February 3, 2010

Well, as intimidating as the East Bay is, I'd like to try and get some folks over here, the places I suggested are either 5 stop or as few as 2 stops from Embarcadero. But we'll see what the general consensus is and go from there. I work in the city so I don't really mind going in for another afternoon/evening.
posted by iamabot at 11:25 PM on February 3, 2010

I'd support an East Bay meetup, but it's tax season so I probably won't make it.
posted by BrotherCaine at 11:37 PM on February 3, 2010

I'm looking at google maps and I like how close Jupiter is to BART. And I like how close the fremont BART station is to San Jose. So I'm voting for Jupiter. As for time, this weekend works best for me. Can I side bar this now?

Oh, so Jupiter is literally, 20 feet from a bart exit...

I will be there if it's at Jupiter.
posted by twiggy32 at 11:47 PM on February 3, 2010

Jupiter is a great place for a meetup! We could always hit Beckett's, Thalassa, Spats or another place later on too. My vote is for next weekend (the 12th or 13th).
posted by iamkimiam at 11:58 PM on February 3, 2010

Maybe we could do Jupiter for a while and then go to Berkeley proper (west Berkeley) and hit up my favorite places - Lanesplitters or Acme? On San Pablo, just off of University - very close to North Berkeley Bart? Either way - if you come to my side of the bay - I will attend.

Holy shit, folks, yes. Berkeley / East Bay meetup? Let's do this thing. Jupiter is awesome.
posted by barnacles at 1:35 AM on February 4, 2010

gingberbeer will be sad if it's this weekend, as she's going out of town. I'm probably a yes!, though, especially if it's at Jupiter. Or somewhere in SF. But not Frjtz.
posted by rtha at 5:24 AM on February 4, 2010

Yes,I will be sad. I will also be in Dallas this weekend.
posted by gingerbeer at 7:26 AM on February 4, 2010

I'd like to see Berkeley, 'cause I pretend taking a trip all the way to SF is as daunting as San Franciscans pretend a trip to the East Bay is.

I will be visiting Frisco Feb 15-22 and Mrs. Bartfast will be stuck at a conference. Plus, I love the Jupiter!

Did I mention I love Frisco?

Frisco!

I grew up there.

Bring the boy along! You couldn't ask for a better first date than one that includes a bunch of half-drunk "friends from the internet"!

In, if I'm not working that day. And I'm making it a goal to not get falling down hammered this time.
posted by mollymayhem at 11:09 AM on February 4, 2010

Totally in!

So just to be clear, we all arrive at different times, leave and then complain about how no one showed up, right? Isn't that how east bay meetups work?
posted by special-k at 11:45 AM on February 4, 2010 [5 favorites]

I'll definitely try to make it. Wow, a 4PM meetup. Damn, you people in the East Bay get started early! I'll be lucky if I'm still cognizant enough to make it home before the BART quits for the night!
posted by Afroblanco at 11:45 AM on February 4, 2010

East Bay Meetup? Yes! Yes! A thousand times yes!
posted by brundlefly at 12:04 PM on February 4, 2010

Yay for East Bay!! And bless the hearts of you SFians willing to ride BART.

I will be a little late, and I will bring a civilian friend because she's taking me to see Loudon Wainwright at the Freight after!
posted by serazin at 12:20 PM on February 4, 2010

(Also, we could consider meeting a little later if 4 feels early for a lot of folks - but I'm definitely fine with 4 if that's what's good for most people)
posted by serazin at 12:22 PM on February 4, 2010

4pm is a starting point (and really flexible, I just needed to designate a time), meetups have been known to run in to the half a dozen hours range.

We can adjust later, it was a try to get people out if they had commitments later in the evening or just wanted food and beer.
posted by iamabot at 12:46 PM on February 4, 2010

Jupiter can get really crowded - so I'll try to get there at 4 and snag a table.
posted by The Light Fantastic at 1:17 PM on February 4, 2010

I figure we'll try to get upstairs on the street side and start snagging those little tables as we have people trickle in ?
posted by iamabot at 2:12 PM on February 4, 2010

We could always hit Beckett's, Thalassa, Spats or another place later on too.

Spats is closed and has been for ages now. No clue what happened; it's just sad and empty inside.

But I'm in for Jupiter. (My first meetup!)
posted by asterix at 5:17 PM on February 4, 2010

Thalassa is a bad idea on weekends.

Jupiter, Triple Rock, and Manny's Taproom are probably the best bets. I'll probably be able to make it, so see you all on Saturday!

This sounds like fun, but I'm afraid I'm not much of a drinker...
posted by extramundane at 10:37 PM on February 9, 2010

Nice! Hopefully this will be the first Bay Area meetup I will actually be able to make it to. I think I'm gonna be spending later that night with my better half, but 4pm is early enough that it should work out.

(btw depending on how averse you guys are to walking, we could always head over to the patio outside of Missouri Lounge later!)
posted by cobra_high_tigers at 11:57 PM on February 9, 2010

extramundane: Jupiter is actually a great place to find yourself if you're not much of a drinker, since they have lots of tasty food and all of their beers are like $3,000 a pint anyway.
posted by cobra_high_tigers at 11:59 PM on February 9, 2010

Jupiter is definitely a good place for non-drinkers, and if there are going to be some non-drinkers at this meetup, I'll happily have lemonade in solidarity!
posted by serazin at 11:15 AM on February 10, 2010

hmm, I might be able to haul my lazy self all the way from Oakland for the first East Bay meetup in like a zillion years. It mostly depends on how much homework I have this weekend.

extramundane, Jupiter has the totally yummy Thomas Kemper Root Beer on tap and lots of food. Don't let not drinking stop you from coming out.
posted by oneirodynia at 7:50 PM on February 10, 2010

Ah, in that case I will be there!

Not just yeah, but hell yeah.

And this will probably be my last since I'm moving.

And yeah, Jupiter is a great place ... for non-drinkers too (whoever that was up there whose handle I have already forgotten) (because I was educated in state funded schools) (shut up).

Yeah, and all that.

And if that fails, just walk up to somebody and ask if they're friends of Matt.

The patio will be quite superb, methinks. I'm tempted to bring a small game...maybe some bones or a deck of cards?

Nikon D80 body, that was a 50mm 1.8 lens, and an SB400 flash, the big lens was an 18-200VR but it takes crud pictures in the dark.

Really if you want to get in to it, D80 is pretty much overkill still these days. You can find used D40 bodies for pretty cheap and they do pretty good.
