SF MEFI GDC 2010: the acronym-ing February 15, 2010 12:19 PM   Subscribe

Anyone up for a San Fran GDC meetup? March 9th - 13th is the target.

I am going to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. This will be my first time visiting SF, so I can not really pick a spot, and I may be very busy, but I do hear great things about you SF mefi members and it would be splendid if we could meet up.

I do suggest if there are other mefi out-of-towners going to the GDC that we not meetup at the conference. I have done internet-meetups at cons before and neither of them went very smoothly.

If I'm in town, I'm for it...may be down under.

Slow response likely due to pres day and the fact that we just had a meetup 2 days ago.

That said, if I'm in town and not working, I'll be there!

I'll be in town and can almost certainly make it there! We did just have a meetup, but Moscone Center is about 50x closer to me than Berkeley, so I'm down =)

I suppose it's only polite to return the favor and make that long westward trek over the bay. Depending on the time it starts (i.e., early enough that we can get back before the BART stops running), sounds like fun!

Ah. I wasn't sure if the proximity was going to be a factor or not, I should familiarize myself with California's geography. Plus it's a month away.

I seem to be a habitual sufferer of bad timing.

*checks*

It's at Moscone. The Chieftain, House of Shields, & 21st Amendment are nearby bars.
posted by Pronoiac at 8:15 PM on February 15, 2010

I have enjoyed The Thirsty Bear, which is nearby.

My friends prefer Nova, which is right next door to 21st Amendment. I think either would be good for a meetup, and both are probably far enough from Moscone that they won't be completely swamped by other conference-goers (unlike bars immediately around Yerba Buena).

Hey all,

Long time lurker, rarely a commenter. But just wanted to chime in and say that I own House Of Shields and would have no problem holding our upstairs for you to come hang out.

Feel free to email me: schlomo at the gmails

Anyway, just trying to help an old community I keep coming back to read. I got this thread from a google vanity email, and thought I'd pop in and offer some space.

That's excellent schlomo! I am down for that if anyone else is.
posted by hellojed at 6:42 PM on February 16, 2010

At the House of Shields!? Hell yeah!!

Now we just need a date. The 10th is pretty poor for me, incidentally. 12th or 13th sounds much better, being Friday/Saturday.
posted by barnacles at 9:39 PM on February 16, 2010

I actually would favor Thursday, since it'll be a little quieter and so on. But either way, I probably can't not go to a meetup that's just a few blocks from my house! So I'll be there!
posted by aubilenon at 2:28 AM on February 17, 2010

I think I'll be available on the 12th. I'm going to go ahead and peg it for 7:30.

So. 7:30 pm on the 12th at the House Of Shields in San Fransisco. It's a date.

Holy crap, you *are* a long time lurker, schlomo. This is awesome by the way. Wish I could attend this meetup; sounds like lots of fun!

I will try to be there.

Never been to a MeFi meetup before, but there's no time like the present. Or Friday, y'know. I should be able to make it.

Hmm, the DC Snopocalypse moved our SF vacation to next week. Not sure how Mr. Arkham feels about getting dragged to a Meetup on vacation, but count us as a "maybe".
posted by JoanArkham at 9:22 AM on March 3, 2010

Does he like beer? If yes, drag him along.
posted by special-k at 9:54 AM on March 3, 2010

If Mr. Arkham doesn't want to hang out with a bunch of weirdos from the internet but he still likes beer, he can just sit at that table way over *there* and pretend we don't exist. Which, since we're invisible friends from the internet, should be easy enough to do!

Seconding special-k in calling for The Whelk to start another meetup thread. We can set a record!

Oddly, the promise of this "beer," as you call it, seemed to work. See you then! (Me= tall redhead, him=short professor/mad scientist type.)

Oh man, I'm going to be in Oregon, and won't be able to go!

Oh well, I'll just have to go to the other three San Francisco meetups coming up.

wow, i think this might be synchronich enought to motivate me to my first meetup.

How easy would it be to take public transportation from the San Jose area? I've been told that CalTrain it's about 40 mins. Is there a good resource like wmata.com is for DC?
posted by now i'm piste at 5:03 PM on March 6, 2010

now i'm piste - I tend to use 511.org in advance, & Google Maps when I'm on the way.

(It's nice that we can worry less about getting hellojed really really drunk.)
posted by Pronoiac at 5:30 PM on March 6, 2010

Within the city, check nextmuni.com if you need to get to/from the Caltrain other than taking a cab. It gets arrival times from GPS data rather than published schedules.

Enjoying sf.. its colder than I expected!
posted by hellojed at 4:56 PM on March 9, 2010

It's colder than most people expect. We like watching the tourists cringe as they walk around in shorts during the summer.
posted by tantivy at 11:43 PM on March 9, 2010

I might not be there tonight. I'm feeling increasingly crappy, and might just need to go to bed early.
posted by rtha at 12:55 PM on March 12, 2010

After a long week of work, moving and no sleep, I just don't have the energy to make the trip up from the South bay this time. Which is such a cryin' shame, because after a long week of work, moving and no sleep a meetup sounds so damn good.
posted by sambosambo at 4:28 PM on March 12, 2010

Plus, like, it just started raining horizontally.
posted by sambosambo at 4:34 PM on March 12, 2010 [1 favorite]

It's back to vertical rain in the East Bay. Well, mostly verticle with a bit of angle-y-ness. Back to vertical. Anyways, here's to hoping it's still vertical (or better: nonexistant!) when I trudge over to the BART in a few hours!
posted by barnacles at 4:43 PM on March 12, 2010

It looks like with weather, wedding planning, and work, we may not be able to make it either. Drat.
posted by mostlymartha at 5:08 PM on March 12, 2010

Horizontal rain and the fact that I converted my filing cabinet at work to minibar = me not coming.
posted by special-k at 5:43 PM on March 12, 2010

Holy crap, sunshine over the bay!
posted by barnacles at 5:55 PM on March 12, 2010

That ties in with national radar, which indicates the rain is probably done for the evening.
posted by barnacles at 5:56 PM on March 12, 2010

I'm super worn out from walking in the rain all day. Not looking like I'll make it at this point...

People left by 10 pm because there was going to be a live music show, or something. I can't do roll call here because I STILL don't know your names, despite having met you at Jupiter and/or Mission Bar.

If Afroblanco offers to take you to a Karaoke bar, you should totally do it.

Only if they have "No Children': I do a great version of that.
