bug? youtube embed disappeared February 18, 2010 5:00 PM Subscribe
The embedded youtube arrow thingy has disappeared for me.
I thiought it was due to my installing and activating plutor's greasemonkey script, since that's the last thing I did before noticing the loss, so I mailed him to tell him, but after an email exchange that led me to discover that it's not related to that. The only other significant change I've made recently is upgrading to firefox 3.6, I suspect that must be the culprit.
Plutor asked if I had any errors reported via the error console. No errors per se, but several warnings.

You've checked your preferences via the link in the top bar, right? "Display YouTube Video inline?" is checked?

hey, I have the same problem wilful. I'd installed flash three or four times before I decided that it had to be something else. When I get home to my laptop I'll see if the preferences got screwy.

I didn't realise the inline embed was maybe flash? and flashblock could have been blocking it? But no, that's not it, still not there with flashblock disabled.

But that doesn't matter. Preferences are computer-specific and not updated until you click 'save' at the bottom of preferences. On this computer, for examples, I can see favorite counts, because it is my roommate's computer; if I click over to my preferences, it will say "don't show favorite counts," even though I can see favorite counts, because that's the preference set on this computer; and it won't stop showing preferences until I click 'save' on the preferences page.

But note that I've never changed that preference, did upgrading (from 3.5 to 3.6) break that?
I don't know how that works, but I expect the explanation is beyond me.

It works through cookies on your computer (I think). So when you upgraded your cookies probably got deleted somehow.

When you click "save" on your preferences page, MeFi sets a cookie on your browser that says, "show inline youtube links". If for some reason that cookie isn't present, you won't get inline youtube links. There are several reasons the cookie might go away. Maybe you saved preferences at some point in the past without that option checked. Maybe you manually removed cookies at some point. We've even had cases where Firefox reaches some sort of internal cookie maximum and starts randomly dropping cookies. So it's probably impossible to tell why you didn't have the cookie in this case, but clicking "save" resets those display preference cookies so it's a good thing to try if you're having display problems.

Maybe it was when I also installed Weave immediately after the upgrade, which shares cookies across computers.

Well, what's odd is that there should be absolutely nothing you do to your computer (barring drastic stuff) that would make that happen at all. Even if you changed your preferences (which you didn't) your preferences page shouldn't have had that option checked unless you'd changed them again on another computer. Do you have a different computer you look at Mefi from sometimes?
Of course, even if you do, you haven't changed prefs, so... yeah, I think this is beyond me, too.

Having never really looked at it before (despite being a briton), that unicorn and lion remind me strongly of the bit in the simpsons where santa's little helper and snowball, desperate for attention, learn to walk on their hindlegs and say "we ... love ... you". yellowbinder, yep, it's only on MeFi. No plans to add it to the other sites right now because there just aren't as many youtube videos at the other sites. Here's a past discussion about it. We've always figured that unless there's a compelling reason to add the player (and the problems and overhead that come with it) at the subsites we'll just let it be on MeFi.

Okay, so after making that last comment I went out to go meet a friend for coffee and on the way I listened the latest Bugle podcast and Andy Zaltzman quoted Olympic snowboard crosser Graham Watanabe on what it meant to him to be at the Olympics: "Try to imagine Pegasus mating with a unicorn and the creature that they birth. I somehow tame it and ride it into the sky in the clouds and sunshine and rainbows. That's what it feels like."
Heh, I thought, what are the odds of that.
And at that very moment a pink cadillac drove by with a pegasus unicorn painted on the side.
