SXSW/Austin meetup?

The karaoke meetup thread never really got off the ground, but I assume that we still want to have a meetup for SXSW. How does Sunday, March 14 look for y'all?

Note that the entire mod staff will be in Austin for SXSW; I have no idea if any of them besides me has specific plans on Sunday (I don't), but I'm pretty sure we're down with a meetup of some sort in general.

I was just about to post something like this. We all get in early, and the convention times are packed with a billion parties at once, so how about Thursday night meetup? There's nothing going on that night except I think jessamyn lands around 6pm. Maybe 7pm Thursday at a bar with decent food somewhere?

I'm down for Thursday.

Can I come?

I don't get out of class until 8:30, and then it takes me an hour to get back to Austin, but dayum if I wouldn't like to say hi.
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 6:28 PM on February 22, 2010

We could make it 8 if 7 is too early. My flight gets in at 6:15, so a little more breathing room would be okay with me.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:30 PM on February 22, 2010

Well don't change it on account of just me. The Austin meetups tend to run about 3 hour long, give or take. What kind of atmosphere are ya'll looking for? Beer, food, tables, casual? Every meetup I've attended seems to stick to that formula. It works for this town.

But if you want a foam party, we can probably arrange that.

I'm very interested in Thursday the 11th.

(And I keep meaning to get some karaoke going, so don't give up hope. It's just likely to be after SXSW.)

Oh I am soooo tempted to drive up for this. Sunday is much more tempting than Thursday, but I'm just a poor country lawyer who doesn't understand all this convention party schedulin'... :) But I'm also very tempted by Thursday.

For some reason I was thinking it was a bit early to go into SXSW scheds, but I'm totally in, schedule allowing. Plus I've got $20 to throw in toward drinks.

If it's a place with smoke, I'll send the dosh over to someone else (or we can use it at the 1st post-SXSW meet-up, y'all's choice).

Totally in. I work downtown, so that is handy, or I am happy to ferry folks from the convention center area to wherever.

Thursday night works for me too.

Should we try to settle on a bar downtown, or do the out-of-towners have access to cars?
posted by donajo at 6:23 AM on February 23, 2010

I'm in - either downtown or away from the crowds.
posted by nightwood at 6:52 AM on February 23, 2010

Quorum! Cool!

I'll be there, when/where ever. I like the idea of downtown, both because I expect it's going to be easiest for the out-of-towners, and also because I like the idea of MetaFilter representing, so to speak. But since I don't have a good specific suggestion I'll go where ever.
posted by dirtdirt at 7:38 AM on February 23, 2010

I'm in.

Weather around SXSW has been fickle. Last year's SXSW meetup at Mother Egan's wound up being on a patio and a little too cold for my tastes. Not sure how the out-of-towners would feel about venturing away from downtown, but that would give us better options for a large-ish meetup.

A few places come to mind: Hoover's has a full bar, competent waitrons, and takes reservations, which may be an issue around SXSW. It also has some of the best BBQ around here. Red House is a pizzeria/bar that would probably have room for us. Good thin-crust. The Parlor is another pizzeria/bar that might work (I'm thinking of the one on Guadalupe, not North Loop). More of a punk-rock dive bar atmosphere.

I'm likely coming through Austin on the 14th. Sadly I'm going to Texas for a different conference so I won't be able to make a meetup any other day, but if y'all do Sunday, I'll try to join in!

Aww. I was hoping there'd be a SXSW meetup, but we're only going to be in town the 18-20. Sad.

I'll be getting in on the evening of 13th. And now I am sad, knowing that I will have missed you all by two mere days. But MeMail me if anyone wants some impromptu, much smaller meetups. (IE- beer sessions, party going, and general rabble-rousing.)

I'm in. Happy to go wherever (trusty digital recorder in hand!)
posted by slappy_pinchbottom at 2:08 PM on February 23, 2010

I'm in as a local Austinite. Another option would be to hold a meetup away from downtown, and then I (and/or other Mefis) can drive and transport out-of-towners from downtown to the meetup. Any bar within walking distance of downtown will be crazy and packed; in fact, probably any bar from 30th street until Johanna St. will be quite busy.
posted by Peter Petridish at 5:42 PM on February 23, 2010

I can attempt to hit up a bar for some reserved space, if y'all want. Since music won't have started they might not be averse to some guaranteed drunks.
posted by restless_nomad at 6:26 PM on February 23, 2010

I think a bar might be our best bet too, due to the come-and-go nature of a meetup.
posted by donajo at 8:14 PM on February 23, 2010

I vote for Dog and Duck, because it's a bit distanced from 6th Street and therefore hopefully not as crowded, and they have a parking lot.

But hey, if it's Mother Egan's or Hoover's (ZOMG HOOVER'S IS SOOO GOOD, EVEN FOR VEGETARIANS), I'm game. Wevs.

I'm good for wherever, and will have a car. ariannavontrauma might join as well.
posted by milquetoast at 4:53 AM on February 24, 2010

I will also have a car to ferry a few people if needed, and probably a Mr immlass to bring with.
posted by immlass at 7:32 AM on February 24, 2010

How about Fado? They have private rooms, and a full menu. I've never eaten there, though, so I can't vouch for the food.
posted by donajo at 8:09 AM on February 24, 2010

I'm gonna nominate Scholz Garten, which was where the big Tenth meetup was held. It's big, central, indoor, no smoke, great wings, and I also recently learned that my Grandmother got drunk and danced on a table there when she was a student at UT 50 years ago. (She swore she only had 1 beer)

It's pretty bus accessible, even the airport flyer (100) gets you 2 blocks away.

We'll likely be bussing/walking to any location downtown. Our apartment has open parking, and is just south of the river. We could host a kind of park & ride thing if it would help people coming from farther way avoid the nebulous nightmare that will surely be downtown parking.
posted by fontophilic at 10:41 AM on February 24, 2010

I forgot about Scholz Garten. Sounds good to me!
posted by donajo at 11:06 AM on February 24, 2010

It sounds fine to me esp the part about being able to get the airport flyer there. Should we call it for seven there?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 11:31 AM on February 24, 2010

I think Scholz is a good choice. When you factor in the outdoor area it's BIG, there is decent parking nearby, especially during non-business hours and non-football games. The website says they even take reservations and have private rooms, should anyone feel so inclined (and we decide that it is the place).
posted by dirtdirt at 11:31 AM on February 24, 2010

Scholz's also has a really nice patio if the weather cooperates. Being SXSW, there will probably be live music (or maybe they won't schedule bands until the 2nd week).

Their calendar has the 14th blocked off for "Powered, Inc.", so they'll probably have the patio to themselves.

.....aaaaaand looking up "Powered Inc.", it says they're a "social marketing" company, and they seem legit. But if we wander out to the patio and they're advocating scummy SEO tactics maybe we could smash our bottles to make shivs and get stabby.
posted by spikeleemajortomdickandharryconnickjrmints at 11:38 AM on February 24, 2010

I think we are talking Thursday the 11th, when the only social marketing evils will be the ones we bring ourselves.

As much as I like Scholz' in general, I thought that their space did not work well for a large meetup.
posted by adamrice at 11:53 AM on February 24, 2010

I just called Scholz, and they won't take a reservation for the 11th (I thought we had decided for that date) because of the Boys Basketball UIL tournament, and they generally don't recommend that we try to join that crowd.

So, options currently on the table are:
Hoovers (bbq/soul food; is this vegetarian-friendly?)
Red House (pizza)
The Parlor (pizza)
The Dog and Duck (pub)
Fado (pub)
posted by donajo at 11:59 AM on February 24, 2010

Hoover's has veggie plates, salads, portobello sandwiches, and fish dishes (for those pescovegos). Here's their menu (pdf).
posted by adamrice at 12:28 PM on February 24, 2010

My votes are for Hoover's and The Parlor, because they look interesting and I have not been to either of them before. I love Dog and Duck but I feel like it would likely be crowded.

posted by restless_nomad at 12:49 PM on February 25, 2010

I can get pizza anyplace. All things being equal if the vegetarians can get fed at the soul food place and there is enough space, I'd prefer it.

Polvo's is a great restaurant that's within walking distance from your trailer. They have a salsa bar, they make their own tortillas, and they squeeze all their own fruit for margaritas and Mexican martinis. I recommend their migas (with cheese) for breakfast.

Across the street and a block or so down the road is Torchy's Tacos, which are the best tacos in town IMHO. They have $2 tacos (3 ingredients) and specialty tacos for ~$1.50 more. Try the dirty sanchez and the fried avocado tacos.

It was lovely to meet everyone that I got to meet, and I'm a little sorry that I needed to go to bed worse than I needed to continue on with the festivities (but that mac & cheese and pinot not-noir was the best sleeping pill I've taken in AGES). I'm down here pretty regularly for work, I will try to catch some future Austin meetups so I can meet more of you and see the rest of you again.

Yay, fun meetup! Good to see all of the mods in the flesh for the first time (except for jessamyn, who we saw at the last SXSW meetup).

Let's do it again soon, yes?

Awesome time. It was great seeing folks (and a couple folks again); wish I'd talked to more of you but it was pretty sardines in there.

Yeah next time maybe we should skip dinner and go straight to the drinking.

Nice meeting y'all, and thanks yet again to donajo for setting this up.

How late did you folks stay at Fado? I had to bail right after dinner to finish an assignment that was due at midnight :-(

Maybe an hour?

We bailed around midnight, so yeah, hour-ish.

I got to request a pony face to face, so that was cool.

I got my comments deleted face to face, that was also cool.

Over at the unloved end of the room, we were speculating about what an in-person banning would look like.

I believe "messy" was the verdict.

Does anyone have photos?

I have some not-too-great photos which I will post shortly. I saw someone else snapping 'em too, but I don't know if he's listening.

I have a picture of my food!

Wow. Did I say "not too great?" I meant terrible. Please tell me someone did better.

I didn't really bother trying to fix these up, they're so bad to start with. My excuses:

1. Poor lighting.
2. Poor camera (Motorola Droid).
3. Poor photographer.
4. Beer.
5. Felt awkward trying to take pictures, not much experience getting this phone to work, didn't really try hard enough.

Oh, well.

I have a picture of my desk. I'm posting it to Lifehacker.

The photos I took last night are added towards the end of that album. At first I forgot setting WB, then I forgot setting ISO... sigh. I blame the great time I was having!

Man, I wish I'd hidden in jessamyn's larger backpack and snuck to TX with her.

I think I just got called out on the radio. That's a little weird.
