Set your expectations low and you won't be disappointed February 23, 2010 9:18 AM   Subscribe

As promised: ChiMeFi MonthlyMichAveMeetup is a GO! 6pm on March 3rd, meeting at the Billy Goat under Michigan Avenue for a quick drink and then heading to a SEEKRIT OUTING!

I've confirmed the SEEKRIT OUTING, so a couple of notes about that:

- The SEEKRIT OUTING will cost $5.
- The SEEKRIT OUTING will leave the Goat at 6:30pm on the dot. SEEKRITS WAIT FOR NO ONE.
- The SEEKRIT OUTING will not return to the Goat! I will update this thread when we leave so latecomers can meet us at the endpoint.
- The SEEKRIT OUTING might be lame. TOO BAD.

Bring comfortable shoes and a sense of adventure! Hooray!

Thanks for this. I had scheduled an appointment for 6:005, not remembering the first Wednesday of the month was special, but just figured I'd meet you guys late. But it's still early enough for me to reschedule.

In other words, I'll see you there.

I forgot I have Hawks tickets that night, so I will sadly not be part of the SEEKRIT OUTING. I hope that this is not a "take the seekrit to the grave" kind of thing where I never find out what I missed. That could actually drive me mad.

I will be skiing. I will also be seeing Guy for like only the second time all winter. So, uh, while I agree with Slack that it will drive me mad if this is a " 'take the seekrit to the grave' kind of thing where I never find out what I missed", I will be driven mad, nonetheless, I have no choice but to miss it. I accept my "Totally Lame" mantle graciously, and hope someone properly looks after Miss Kaz.

I wasn't planning on this being SEEKRIT forever, but now I think it might have to be.

Aw man. And on the night I have class. I'll have to watch the thread and see what happens. Maybe I can catch up.
posted by lholladay at 12:33 PM on February 23, 2010

Oh, and I'll have to leave work early to make it there by 6:30, which means I'll probably be there by like 5:45, so I hope the SEEKRIT frowns not upon those who drink so many tiny beers ahead of time that it's like they had a few normal-sized beers.

Does this outing involve riding the EL?

Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe.
posted by eamondaly at 5:36 PM on February 24, 2010

Well if there isn't, and if beers are that important, we can just drink before AND after the main event.

Obviously somebody's never been to a strip club where they don't serve alcohol.

(Neither have I.)

(And I'm also not implying that's what I think the secret is.)

Eamon, can you give us a feel for how this might affect our travel plans? How far does this take us from the Goat? Do I want to commute by bike that day? Will our suburban sisters and brothers end up far from the Metra lines?
posted by hydrophonic at 8:18 PM on February 24, 2010

Oh, and I'm in regardless!
posted by hydrophonic at 8:18 PM on February 24, 2010

We will be within walking distance from the Goat, so it shouldn't prove any more or less difficult than usual. I would say leave the bike at home if you can: it'll probably be a bit of a hassle.

I am jealous that crush will be skiing, and sad that she won't be there, but maybe it's for the best, because she's METAFILTER FAMOUS® now.

But seriously crush, awesome, awesome, awesome comment. I'd sit through 20 more "ZOMG NOLAWFORASK!" MeTa's to have such a concise, helpful guide to getting and utilizing a lawyer.

Side note: My landlord's name is Zomg Nolawforaski. (Un)true story!

No kidding about that comment. I know what friend I'm asking if I ever need a lawyer!
posted by adamdschneider at 8:36 AM on February 25, 2010

So the SEEKRIT OUTING will be done by 7:30ish? Will we/can we go back to the Goat after the SEEKRIT OUTING? Or will we be wearing the taint of the SEEKRIT, such that Payne or Not-Payne will not allow us to re-enter?
posted by SpiffyRob at 8:52 AM on February 25, 2010

There's travel time to and from the SEEKRIT OUTING, so a wrap-up time of 8-ish is probably more likely. And yeah, we can totally decide to go back to the Goat: I just don't want anyone to count on it.
posted by eamondaly at 9:33 AM on February 25, 2010

This all sounds so absolutely fabulous. I expect to be there by 6:25. Due to recent worplace volitility I hope to be there in time to down one tiny beer, just for the sake of appearances. I picture it like a marathoner stopping at a water station.

YAY SEEKRIT OUTING!
posted by readery at 9:57 AM on February 25, 2010

Okay, with all that said, I'm in. To be fair, I was also in before anything was said.

I would likely be down with a journey back to the Goat, assuming I don't leave the SEEKRIT OUTING a fundamentally changed man.

As your attorney, I advise you to get very drunk, very quickly, before attempting any Seekrit Tatooing of Restless Ghosts. Then hire Zomg Nolawforaski. He's one helluva guy.

For what it's worth: My plans to leave work early tomorrow have been thwarted, so I won't be at the Goat ahead of time, and may have to meet up with you folks in transit or at the SEEKRIT. Luckily I have my beardphone for realtime updates about location.

Man, I miss the old Adam West episodes of the Adventures of Beardman and SpiffyRob. The new stuff is a lot slicker in the FX department, but it doesn't have the same charm.

the Adventures of Beardman and SpiffyRob...

I've always regretted my inability to draw comics, but rarely as much as right now.

Like SpiffyRob, my plans have been thwarted, so I won't be leaving Uptown until 6. So I will attempt to get to you all by 6:30, but will be cutting it close, so will should be able to check in via phone.

The forecast for participation in tiny beers & SEEKRIT OUTING this month is looking grim despite the glorious sunshine outside today.
posted by Bunglegirl at 11:11 AM on March 3, 2010

Don't worry if you're a bit late, by the way. The SEEKRIT OUTING is not far from the Goat, so catching up will likely not be a problem.

Also, there is a hint as to the location of the SEEKRIT OUTING on this page. A free beer to the person who figures it out first!

Thanks for falling on that grenade for me, man. A third would've turned a fun night into a sobbing disaster. Steer clear of seven-dollar screwdrivers in pint glasses!

desjardins, we went on a short guided tour of the Chicago Pedway! And then we walked sixty miles to a karaoke place and sang our little hearts out.

I am really sorry to have missed the pedway tour. There is no sarcasm. I eat that stuff up with a spoon.
posted by crush-onastick at 7:37 AM on March 5, 2010

Indeed, despite

1) yesterday's grogginess (hangover repellent: make yourself a black cow when you get home if you skipped dinner -- of course, the inspiration might come less from somebody's karaoke and more from the fact that it was pretty much the only food in your apartment...still though, hit the spot)

and

2) a mini-black eye that finally showed up in the corner of my left eye (lopez) this morning (from karaoke accident triggered by my own idiocy and lack of grace/personal boundaries...no I'm not kidding...)

I, as always, enjoyed myself immensely. And like crush, I eat up any architecture/local neatness tour-type activities up with a spoon. Even without alcohol or ice cream involved.
