Not THAT kind of Revival.... March 20, 2010 1:51 PM   Subscribe

Auckland, lets meet.

Sure this could have been a better post, but function over form, number 8 wire and all that. Lets meet up.

When? Weekends work better for everyone, right?

What area? CBD? Somewhere close to Britomart? Viaduct maybe?

Where? I'm guessing beer over wine, but overall, alcohol over no alcohol?

Summer's gone away, but we aren't scared of autumn, right?

So how about it. Lets hear some suggestions and meetup!

Who's down, who has restrictions, and who has good ideas?

This is my favourite time of year. Beer is my favourite drink although I like wine too. Metafilter is my favourite website. Talking to people is my favourite activity. So all signs point to yes.

I can do weeknights or weekends except this Saturday evening because we're going to see Minuit (which I recommend everyone else does too, they rule). I get around by bus so bars anywhere central townish works well otherwise on a bus route. Apparently Squid Row does a cheap cocktail hour every evening from 5 to 8, I recently had fun at the Nuffield St Brew Bar, I've enjoyed the Bluestone Room in the past, the Loaded Hog makes great beer, and I'm always up for somewhere new.

Hustling people behind the scenes to point out this metatalk thread can be effective (done in moderation), kiwis can be laid back to the point of not actually doing stuff but we have fun once we're going.

Oh and I don't need alcohol to have a good time FWIW. So daytime hanging out is also fine assuming someone comes up with an idea (since I'm a bit short on those right now).
posted by shelleycat at 3:44 PM on March 20, 2010

I just paid my $5 (actually my $7.24 NZD) to say a meet up would be great. Britomart / Viaduct is great for transport or parking. Weekends are best for me!

Well, I might be in for this. Can I suggest the Mezze Bar in Durham Ln?

Oh, and I meant to say, hal_c_on, that's a neat trick with your profile! We all need more broccoli.

How soon were you thinking? Wouldn't mind coming up from Chch, I've been meaning to visit friends up there anyway.
posted by tracicle at 1:05 PM on March 21, 2010

I just moved to Waihi, so it's a wee drive (though a long walk, and I'm currently carless). Nevertheless, I'll pay attention and hopefully the general concensus of a date is one I can make it up for. Later rather than sooner would be better for me, if it comes to it.

Oh, and a vote for beer and wine.
posted by twirlypen at 3:33 AM on March 22, 2010

We can always do both, meetup now and again later! But in reality organising a bunch of scatty Aucklanders takes time anyway so waiting a few weeks probably makes sense.

Then you can all hear my exciting tales about macrophages, thesis writing, and publishing priority fights.
posted by shelleycat at 1:15 PM on March 22, 2010

Hooray, an Auckland meetup! I'm definitely in. Another vote for an alcohol-enhanced, weekend, conveniently-CBD event.

Miss Otis' Egrets, I was JUST at the Mezze Bar and I agree, it's great. Or we could get a big table or room at the Elliott Stables just off Queen Street-- that way everyone could find something they like to eat and drink...
posted by oceanmorning at 5:37 PM on March 22, 2010

Sure, I'm keen no particular worries about where and when.
posted by scodger at 11:18 PM on March 22, 2010

So maybe we should start narrowing things down a bit? I'm actually busy all this weekend as I just remembered that Boyd's doing The Duel on Saturday (I'll be dragging him along btw, he's friendly despite his non-mefite ways). But I'm free next weekend either day.
posted by shelleycat at 11:24 PM on March 22, 2010

I'm with the hustler on this; lets start narrowing things down.

When? Lets start to naildown a date in April.

Narrower when? Weekend or weeknight.

Where? I hear Mezze, Viaduct, Elliott Stables, Squid Row, Nuffield St Brew Bar, Bluestone Room, Loaded Hog.

What? Beer, wine, and seriously though...where is alcohol not available?

OH...and this post will probably be on the 5th metatalk page before we actually nail things down, so lets all subscribe to this thread. It'll keep us abreast of whats up.

Now lets start talking about when, where, etc we DONT want to do stuff.

I say no sunday meetup. Not this first one...maybe when we're all comfortable enough with each other...but not the first meetup.

Now I want to hear more "Can't" and "don't" words outta you mefities.

How about one evening the week after Easter? I can't do the week after or the week before.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 2:30 PM on March 24, 2010

I'd forgotten about Easter. I'll be around (and working bleh) but I imagine most people have better things to be doing. Specially after the dearth of public holidays this year.

If I look through April I see that the 17th is bad but every other Fri or Sat is free at this point. I looked at the Mezze website and it does look nice (I had to stop looking at the menu because it was making me hungry), so I'm happy with that option.
posted by shelleycat at 3:15 PM on March 24, 2010

I'm going to put in a solid date request: Thursday 15 April at ... anywhere ... Thursday because it's nearly the weekend but not quite and because it will give me some incentive to finish an assignment that is due on Saturday 16th.

Place: I'm fine with any place that has decently priced drink and decently priced food to soak up that drink.
posted by nixit at 11:02 PM on March 24, 2010

Ack. My assignment is due on Saturday the 17th. So much for my proofreading skills.
posted by nixit at 11:03 PM on March 24, 2010

Nixit, I think we're making progress.

I see a date request, and a request to have it on the how about we nail that down.

Thursday the 15th, or Friday the 16th...evening. Which is better for you? Yes, yes...I know that Date X would work much better for you, but come on, we're planning a night out, not a staff meeting.

Lets figure out the date, and then we can move on to the venue. Knowing the date in advance, we will be able to use that to our advantage in the hopes of having cheaper drinks or free food or something...maybe.

So yeah...write back and tell us which is better, the 15th or the 16th of April.
posted by hal_c_on at 12:01 AM on March 25, 2010

Hmm. Pretty sure I'm tramping in the Whirinaki that whole week. Wonderful bird life but the food's not great and there's no beer. Unless I've got my weeks mixed up - must check when I get home.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 1:35 PM on March 25, 2010

I can't do Wednesdays or Thursdays. Boyd's also busy either Mon or Tue of each week in April but which one varies from week to week.
posted by shelleycat at 2:03 PM on March 25, 2010

So...we were back to Thursday the 15th or Friday the 16th.

Nixit is down for Thursday.
I am down for Thurs or Friday.

Shelleycat has said that she is not down for that Thursday, which still doesn't mean she's down for Friday.
Miss Otis' Egrets has yet to confirm.

Everybody else is quiet.

Also, how about tossing a date in the air, if you shoot something down? That should have a catalyzing effect to this process.

Hello all, allow me to de-lurk and summarise: Ruling out Easter, Mondays (Me, also shellycat's Boyd half the time), Tuesdays (Boyd half the time, general keeping-things-simple and too-early-in-the-week principals), Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday 17th (shellycat), The week of the 12th (Miss Otis' Egrets, unless he has mixed up his weeks) and Sundays (hal_c_on) the days still available in April are:

Fri 9th
Sat 10th
Fri 23rd
Sat 24th (the day before ANZAC day)
Fri 30th

Not captured there are preferences for "weekend" (nixit, who paid $7.24 to say so, but maybe "weekend" can include Fri evening?) and "later" (twirlypen).
posted by Canard de Vasco at 4:34 AM on March 28, 2010

Definitely out of town 12th-16th. My preference is for Fri 9th or Fri 23rd.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 2:13 PM on March 28, 2010

I'm usually free on Fridays (and Saturday's actually) so I think the 9th and 23rd are OK but I left my diary at home today so I'll need to double check and confirm later. I've had to start outsourcing the remembering part of my brain since I've run out of room for it in my skull.

Lots of the midweek stuff is just general Phd student end of thesis crap where I work a million hours a week while my supervisors attempt to increase my workload for no reason. But by Friday I've run out of steam so I get an evening off.
posted by shelleycat at 6:47 PM on March 28, 2010

9th, 10th, or 23rd for me.
posted by oceanmorning at 7:49 PM on March 29, 2010

I'm leaning towards the 23rd personally simply because I'm completely utterly exhausted right now and I should be less so by then. But I'll drag myself out for mefites next week if I have to and you can marvel at the black rings I'm generating under my eyes.

Amazing, guys.
If only we can get scodger and twirlypen to confirm...that would be a 100% confirmation from all participants on this thread...but even now we're at 80%. Amazing.

NOW...where do we wanna rock?

Viaduct, Mezze, Bluestone Room, Loaded Hog, Elliott (I'll second those last three) are the only ones that have more than one vote each. They also are centrally located which makes it easy for walkers, drivers, and transit users. Any other suggestions, or should we try to narrow it down from there?

It only took us 242 hours to narrow down a date...and now we have 550 hours to nail down a venue!
posted by hal_c_on at 11:56 PM on March 30, 2010

I think the Mezze bar sounds good and it had a couple of supporters already. How big is it, how loud is it and how easy to get a table? Somewhere we don't need to worry so much about exact numbers could be useful for encouraging last minute joiners. But I'm not fussy either, the other places sound good. (unhelpful I know!).

Do you want me to post a new thread pointing to this one (maybe in the morning for all the work-place metafilterers)? More exposure is always good.

Agreed, but I already registered it, so we'll always be on the metatalk sidebar (check it out).

I laughed out loud at work...and then realized that this is a group of people who are going to converse in meatspace. that a joke...or for real? No judgement, just wondering...

I think everyone on here owes shelleycat a drink for her proactive enthusiasm. We should turn this into a regular thing; have a regular thread dedicated to the next auckland meetup.
Or...maybe we should wait and see if we like each other. are some places I found out through work that are great at seating lots of people(right now we have 8 confirmed...and I'm guessing there's gonna be some SO's coming...and some lurkers who haven't voiced their opinion...maybe 15...even 20???):

Tanuki (emphasis on "not the cave")-Great for big groups, we take our shoes off sit on the floor and eat at a communal table. Plenty of hot and cold sake, and traditional japanese restaurant fare. On queen street in cbd

Mexican Cafe-Victoria street (off queen street). Can you really go wrong with Tequilla and Aztec ice cream? The great thing about this place is our options:
If we want to make it early and get out early, there's the happy hour menu that starts at 17:00.

We can have a nice dinner, or snacks, or just drinks all the way from 19:00 to 23:00.

BUT, if we kick some ass and stay up after that we will definitely want to embarass ourselves in front of DJ King Salsa. I actually cannot think of a worse stereotypical name for a Chilean in NZ.

Something for everyone.

I'm kinda leaning towards Mexican Cafe...would you guys have a look and tell me what you think? I may be coming from a different opinion...but it seems kinda:
1. drinky
2. fun-inducing
3. laid back if we want
4. cheap-ish for drinks ($6.50 for monteiths, and $20 for a JUG of margaritas).
5. Kinda ok for food prices...although it is around $20 for somewhere in the city on a friday night is kinda a deal.
6. We can do everything online including our group booking.

What do you guys think?
posted by hal_c_on at 11:48 PM on March 31, 2010

I have sampled the Mexican Cafe's margarita by the jug and can vouch for it being a fun time. And not much else because we had several. I like that idea.

posted by scodger at 9:23 PM on April 5, 2010

April 23rd, Mexican Cafe it is!

Now a few more questions so that we can pile on the text in the metafilter servers:

1. The easy question...what time should we start? I may show up at 5pm to start sampling the food (and drinks) during happy hour...but I have no curfew so I'll be staying till DJ King Salsa boots me out. Oh...I guess that question is up anytime after 5pm? Does that sound good?

2. How many people should we expect. This thread has received 9 confirmations for the 23rd, and 7 confirmations for Mexican Cafe. Its going to be a friday night, so I want to be as accurate as possible for booking a table. Guests, Girls, and Boy(d)s, are welcome cuz that's how we I'm kinda wanting to say 20...but I don't want it to be 5 people sitting 3 seats away from the next person so we take up all 20 spots. I'm also hoping that people who didn't write on here will show up...but realistically, its not probable...right?
posted by hal_c_on at 5:54 PM on April 6, 2010

I've booked my flights, so I'll be there for sure! I'm staying with a friend in Ellerslie and she's not home until 5:30ish, so I may not get there until closer to 7.

posted by shelleycat at 10:59 PM on April 7, 2010

Ok guys, can you just make it kinda clear about whether you're coming...and if so, if you're bringing a guest so I can make the booking. They won't accept my "Between 7 and 20", so I'm gonna have to narrow it down and hopefully you'll help me so we can all be seated when we're nerding out.

I was at The Neighbourhood (the Macs bar) in Kingsland last night and man, awesome. My friends arrived at about 4.30 I think so scored a good table but it actually wasn't that busy in the back all evening (we had the best view too). But Kingsland is probably a bit far out for everyone else and I don't think they do bookings as such, and the closer-to-town version, Nuffield St bar in Newmarket, is much smaller, less fun and is busier on a Friday.

But otherwise I'm not really all that fussy at all. Anywhere is going to be busy and noisy on a Friday I'd say and I haven't ever made an actual booking in town (am not that organised!). So am not helpful but am happy without whatever happens.
posted by shelleycat at 12:02 AM on April 17, 2010

Actually Macs has the Northern Steamship Bar right down by the waterfront and apparently they take bookings. I've never been there and don't know how big it is, but I assume the food and beer is the same (and excellent) as the others. Might be worth at least giving them a ring? Better to have a booking we cancel than trying to get everyone to decide and ending up hanging in Albert Park.
posted by shelleycat at 12:13 AM on April 17, 2010

Sorry about the non-response, as I was doubtful about making the Mexican Cafe. Anything on the waterfront/Viaduct would suit me - better parking, more choices etc. However driving on the Southern Motorway in rush hour kinda freaks me out, as I haven't done that for 10 years, and it's got much much worse.

Excellent idea. I'll actually be eating there for lunch/brunch today...will scope it out, and will get a booking in person if it will take us. I'll write back in about 8 hours with my findings.

I hate motorway driving too arzakh and try to plan my whole life around never having to do it. You can get around a lot of Auckland without the motorway (Great South Road for example), although it's much slower and more annoying and there's still traffic. The slower part can be better though, more time to work out what's going in when you're crawling at 20 kph, heh. Also, depending on where you're coming from, you could look at driving to a train or bus station at Ellersie or somewhere similar (I'm not sure where's the best place to park) and use public transport for the rest, we have a couple of people coming in by train already. I hope you can make it, then we can all bitch about the traffic.
