Not THAT kind of Revival.... March 20, 2010 1:51 PM   Subscribe

Auckland, lets meet.

Sure this could have been a better post, but function over form, number 8 wire and all that. Lets meet up.

When? Weekends work better for everyone, right?

What area? CBD? Somewhere close to Britomart? Viaduct maybe?

Where? I'm guessing beer over wine, but overall, alcohol over no alcohol?

Summer's gone away, but we aren't scared of autumn, right?

So how about it. Lets hear some suggestions and meetup!

Who's down, who has restrictions, and who has good ideas?

This is my favourite time of year. Beer is my favourite drink although I like wine too. Metafilter is my favourite website. Talking to people is my favourite activity. So all signs point to yes.

I can do weeknights or weekends except this Saturday evening because we're going to see Minuit (which I recommend everyone else does too, they rule). I get around by bus so bars anywhere central townish works well otherwise on a bus route. Apparently Squid Row does a cheap cocktail hour every evening from 5 to 8, I recently had fun at the Nuffield St Brew Bar, I've enjoyed the Bluestone Room in the past, the Loaded Hog makes great beer, and I'm always up for somewhere new.

Hustling people behind the scenes to point out this metatalk thread can be effective (done in moderation), kiwis can be laid back to the point of not actually doing stuff but we have fun once we're going.

Oh and I don't need alcohol to have a good time FWIW. So daytime hanging out is also fine assuming someone comes up with an idea (since I'm a bit short on those right now).
posted by shelleycat at 3:44 PM on March 20, 2010

I just paid my $5 (actually my $7.24 NZD) to say a meet up would be great. Britomart / Viaduct is great for transport or parking. Weekends are best for me!

Well, I might be in for this. Can I suggest the Mezze Bar in Durham Ln?
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 6:09 PM on March 20, 2010

Oh, and I meant to say, hal_c_on, that's a neat trick with your profile! We all need more broccoli.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 6:10 PM on March 20, 2010

How soon were you thinking? Wouldn't mind coming up from Chch, I've been meaning to visit friends up there anyway.
posted by tracicle at 1:05 PM on March 21, 2010

I just moved to Waihi, so it's a wee drive (though a long walk, and I'm currently carless). Nevertheless, I'll pay attention and hopefully the general concensus of a date is one I can make it up for. Later rather than sooner would be better for me, if it comes to it.

Oh, and a vote for beer and wine.
posted by twirlypen at 3:33 AM on March 22, 2010

We can always do both, meetup now and again later! But in reality organising a bunch of scatty Aucklanders takes time anyway so waiting a few weeks probably makes sense.

Then you can all hear my exciting tales about macrophages, thesis writing, and publishing priority fights.
posted by shelleycat at 1:15 PM on March 22, 2010

Hooray, an Auckland meetup! I'm definitely in. Another vote for an alcohol-enhanced, weekend, conveniently-CBD event.

Miss Otis' Egrets, I was JUST at the Mezze Bar and I agree, it's great. Or we could get a big table or room at the Elliott Stables just off Queen Street-- that way everyone could find something they like to eat and drink...
posted by oceanmorning at 5:37 PM on March 22, 2010

Sure, I'm keen no particular worries about where and when.
posted by scodger at 11:18 PM on March 22, 2010

So maybe we should start narrowing things down a bit? I'm actually busy all this weekend as I just remembered that Boyd's doing The Duel on Saturday (I'll be dragging him along btw, he's friendly despite his non-mefite ways). But I'm free next weekend either day.
posted by shelleycat at 11:24 PM on March 22, 2010

How about one evening the week after Easter? I can't do the week after or the week before.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 2:30 PM on March 24, 2010

I'd forgotten about Easter. I'll be around (and working bleh) but I imagine most people have better things to be doing. Specially after the dearth of public holidays this year.

If I look through April I see that the 17th is bad but every other Fri or Sat is free at this point. I looked at the Mezze website and it does look nice (I had to stop looking at the menu because it was making me hungry), so I'm happy with that option.
posted by shelleycat at 3:15 PM on March 24, 2010

I'm going to put in a solid date request: Thursday 15 April at ... anywhere ... Thursday because it's nearly the weekend but not quite and because it will give me some incentive to finish an assignment that is due on Saturday 16th.

Place: I'm fine with any place that has decently priced drink and decently priced food to soak up that drink.
posted by nixit at 11:02 PM on March 24, 2010

Ack. My assignment is due on Saturday the 17th. So much for my proofreading skills.
posted by nixit at 11:03 PM on March 24, 2010

Hmm. Pretty sure I'm tramping in the Whirinaki that whole week. Wonderful bird life but the food's not great and there's no beer. Unless I've got my weeks mixed up - must check when I get home.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 1:35 PM on March 25, 2010

I can't do Wednesdays or Thursdays. Boyd's also busy either Mon or Tue of each week in April but which one varies from week to week.
posted by shelleycat at 2:03 PM on March 25, 2010

Hello all, allow me to de-lurk and summarise: Ruling out Easter, Mondays (Me, also shellycat's Boyd half the time), Tuesdays (Boyd half the time, general keeping-things-simple and too-early-in-the-week principals), Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturday 17th (shellycat), The week of the 12th (Miss Otis' Egrets, unless he has mixed up his weeks) and Sundays (hal_c_on) the days still available in April are:

Fri 9th
Sat 10th
Fri 23rd
Sat 24th (the day before ANZAC day)
Fri 30th

Not captured there are preferences for "weekend" (nixit, who paid $7.24 to say so, but maybe "weekend" can include Fri evening?) and "later" (twirlypen).
posted by Canard de Vasco at 4:34 AM on March 28, 2010

Definitely out of town 12th-16th. My preference is for Fri 9th or Fri 23rd.
posted by Miss Otis' Egrets at 2:13 PM on March 28, 2010

I'm usually free on Fridays (and Saturday's actually) so I think the 9th and 23rd are OK but I left my diary at home today so I'll need to double check and confirm later. I've had to start outsourcing the remembering part of my brain since I've run out of room for it in my skull.

Lots of the midweek stuff is just general Phd student end of thesis crap where I work a million hours a week while my supervisors attempt to increase my workload for no reason. But by Friday I've run out of steam so I get an evening off.
posted by shelleycat at 6:47 PM on March 28, 2010

For example I have no idea what I'm doing on the 17th but I was looking at my diary when I declared it busy so I'm guessing it must be something!
posted by shelleycat at 6:49 PM on March 28, 2010

My diary says I'm free every Friday and all other Saturdays in April so 9th, 23rd or even 30th would be fine.
posted by shelleycat at 10:50 PM on March 28, 2010

9th, 10th, or 23rd for me.
posted by oceanmorning at 7:49 PM on March 29, 2010

I'm leaning towards the 23rd personally simply because I'm completely utterly exhausted right now and I should be less so by then. But I'll drag myself out for mefites next week if I have to and you can marvel at the black rings I'm generating under my eyes.

I may be able to fly up the weekend of the 23rd-25th. Just need to persuade husband it's REALLY important.

Yep, flights are cheap enough. So I'm putting my name down for the 23rd or sometime that weekend.

I think the Mezze bar sounds good and it had a couple of supporters already. How big is it, how loud is it and how easy to get a table? Somewhere we don't need to worry so much about exact numbers could be useful for encouraging last minute joiners. But I'm not fussy either, the other places sound good. (unhelpful I know!).

Do you want me to post a new thread pointing to this one (maybe in the morning for all the work-place metafilterers)? More exposure is always good.

Any of those places have wifi?

I look at metatalk every day and if I didn't see it on the sidebar then I guarantee most other people won't either :-P

(I did see it a couple of days ago but only because I already knew to look there)

I've booked my flights, so I'll be there for sure! I'm staying with a friend in Ellerslie and she's not home until 5:30ish, so I may not get there until closer to 7.
posted by tracicle at 2:28 AM on April 7, 2010

tracicle: I live (and work) in that area. I plan on catching the train from the Ellerslie station. Maybe we could coordinate our getting-to-the-meetup efforts?

I'd love to come up from Welly for this (thanks to tracicle for suggesting that) but I don't think I can manage at this point. Have fun folks!

joe's_spleen: Another time, then. Miss Otis' Regrets, that would be fab. I'll wear the pink carnation.
posted by tracicle at 10:27 PM on April 7, 2010

We should all wear pink carnations. It sounds like the kind of thing we could buy fake and cheap from Geoff's emporium.

I don't know what time I'll arrive because it's too far way but I'll have an idea closer to the time. It will be some time after-work-ish.
posted by shelleycat at 10:59 PM on April 7, 2010

I am coming for sure and we will be two. Probably sometime around six but I can confirm that early next week.

I was at The Neighbourhood (the Macs bar) in Kingsland last night and man, awesome. My friends arrived at about 4.30 I think so scored a good table but it actually wasn't that busy in the back all evening (we had the best view too). But Kingsland is probably a bit far out for everyone else and I don't think they do bookings as such, and the closer-to-town version, Nuffield St bar in Newmarket, is much smaller, less fun and is busier on a Friday.

But otherwise I'm not really all that fussy at all. Anywhere is going to be busy and noisy on a Friday I'd say and I haven't ever made an actual booking in town (am not that organised!). So am not helpful but am happy without whatever happens.
posted by shelleycat at 12:02 AM on April 17, 2010

Actually Macs has the Northern Steamship Bar right down by the waterfront and apparently they take bookings. I've never been there and don't know how big it is, but I assume the food and beer is the same (and excellent) as the others. Might be worth at least giving them a ring? Better to have a booking we cancel than trying to get everyone to decide and ending up hanging in Albert Park.
posted by shelleycat at 12:13 AM on April 17, 2010

Sorry about the non-response, as I was doubtful about making the Mexican Cafe. Anything on the waterfront/Viaduct would suit me - better parking, more choices etc. However driving on the Southern Motorway in rush hour kinda freaks me out, as I haven't done that for 10 years, and it's got much much worse.
posted by arzakh at 7:03 AM on April 17, 2010

I hate motorway driving too arzakh and try to plan my whole life around never having to do it. You can get around a lot of Auckland without the motorway (Great South Road for example), although it's much slower and more annoying and there's still traffic. The slower part can be better though, more time to work out what's going in when you're crawling at 20 kph, heh. Also, depending on where you're coming from, you could look at driving to a train or bus station at Ellersie or somewhere similar (I'm not sure where's the best place to park) and use public transport for the rest, we have a couple of people coming in by train already. I hope you can make it, then we can all bitch about the traffic.
posted by shelleycat at 3:35 PM on April 17, 2010

What's the booking under? As in, who should we ask for? I should get there sixish, possibly a little after but not earlier.
posted by shelleycat at 6:51 PM on April 17, 2010

Awesome, got the memail thanks. What time are others expecting to be at Ellerslie station? We can swap cell #s, maybe.
posted by tracicle at 8:09 PM on April 17, 2010

Looks like train leaves Ellerslie station for Britomart at quarter to the hour, so I'm not sure whether I'll be there just after 6 or just after 7. Miss Otis' Regrets, what are your plans?
posted by tracicle at 8:13 PM on April 17, 2010

tracicle, I think you were looking at the Saturday timetable. The Friday train leaves Ellerslie at 5:35 or 6:00. I'll be catching the 6pm, getting to Britomart 6:18, Northern Steamship 6:19 for anyone wishing to join me in a light spot of public transport.

So thinking back I actually managed to talk about all three things last night, not intentionally but clearly that's what's on my mind. Boyd and I both had an excellent time and definitely like the idea of a repeat performance.

I agree though, it was pretty bloody loud. Fortunately I'm good at lip reading.

Yeah, I really don't understand the New Zealand attitude where the less people in the pub, the more they turn up the music. it's nothing to do with being old either, it's bugged me since I was a teenager. I think the only way to avoid that is go somewhere focussed more on the food side of things (so a cafe rather than a pub) or possibly go during the day.
