Yes, I was (and am) completely serious: PDX 10.7, 24 April at Enchanted Forest (near Salem). Two-week reminder.

The park is open from 10:00 - 17:00 during weekends in April.

Getting up, much less leaving at 09:00 on a Saturday does not really work for me so I figured we could compromise and meet somewhere central around 11 or so to work out how everyone is getting there (some of us have room for one or two more; I think we can take one).

Alternately we can take the who-where-when offline and just agree to meet onsite at a certain time but I prefer the caravan option myself.

What say ye, Stumptowners?

Woo!

I think it'd probably be best to try and work out the transportation stuff formally ahead of time—establish who is available to drive down and how many they can seat, and when we want to depart for La ForĂȘt EnchantĂ©e.

Doing the actual drive as a caravan sounds like a good plan to me.

I'll second that woo. I'm fairly excited about this; I haven't been to Enchanted Forest in years. I will need a ride, though.

Enchanted Forest

Oh my God, that place is still around? I went to school at Willamette University in Salem, and several of my acting compadres had jobs there working the comedy theater shows. Oh, man, I hope that place is still the gloriously seedy dump that I remember. I'm actually sad I can't make this. We used to get monumentally baked and go laugh at our luckless performer friends. Not that they cared, as they were also stoned out of their minds.

If we all show up and it turns out the place has become like cleaned up and viable, we're gonna feel pretty stupid, yeah.

Their website is gold. The "Storybook Lane" page features some classic "This will terrify your small children beyond lucidity" photos. Have fun with the overfilled garbage cans, scattered pools of vomit, and sobbing kids!

Wait -- will this be in fantasy park for 3rd graders area, or the thrill rides for 6th graders area?
posted by msalt at 1:50 PM on April 9, 2010

Yeah it's still there but it has been cleaned up some. Note that I say some. It still needs a pretty big overhaul.

You can get a rough idea of its current state here.
posted by geckoinpdx at 1:51 PM on April 9, 2010

msalt, it's all one big glorious forest. You need tickets to get on the rides and in the haunted house though.

Is there a hotel nearby called the Enchanted Hunters?
posted by mmmbacon at 5:32 PM on April 9, 2010

I had my first panic attack in the rabbit hole! Wow. Enchanted Forest.

PDX meetups: setting the bar for the rest of us.
posted by catlet at 5:20 AM on April 10, 2010

We could say this is our first family friendly outing, assuming you find this, this or this family friendly.
posted by fiercekitten at 7:42 AM on April 10, 2010

Oh, and we can take 2.
posted by fiercekitten at 7:45 AM on April 10, 2010

Meeting somewhere central would be a good idea, but not too far off the freeway. Any suggestions?
posted by fiercekitten at 7:46 AM on April 10, 2010

I've got gas money if someone can offer a ride.

Meeting up before we leave - maybe a trimet park and ride: by design they are near highway exits and easily accessible by both public transport and by car.

Perhaps the Barbur Blvd. one since we are all headed south anyway? Or maybe more central for us bussers even if some people end up driving north first?
posted by idiopath at 12:28 PM on April 10, 2010

Well for I-5, Barbur TC is right there and it's pretty easy to get to what with the 12 running like every 45 seconds or whatever. I'm just not sure how much room it has for cars and so forth..?

I think there's one right off I-5 in Tualatin (at Bridgeport) but that might be harder for some to get to by bus, the 38, 76 and 96 all go there.

Rose Quarter is pretty central but it's not always easy to navigate.

geckoinpdx: "I'm just not sure how much room it has for cars and so forth..? "

they call it park and ride for a reason
posted by idiopath at 3:32 PM on April 10, 2010

Not sure yet whether I will be able to make it, but I hope I can. If so, I can provide a ride for up to three additional people.
posted by Nothing... and like it at 8:21 PM on April 10, 2010

I'm still in. I'm not sure if I'm taking Jai, so I'll have room for either 2 or 3 people in my car.
posted by Lutoslawski at 12:45 PM on April 12, 2010

I'm reasonably sure I'm in; I'm sad it's happening in the middle of Stumptown Comics Fest, but on the other hand, if I go to the Comics Fest, I will spend money I really shouldn't, so a trip to Enchanted Forest is probably the better plan.

I can either take two or three people, depending on if my girlfriend can go.
posted by Caduceus at 11:02 PM on April 13, 2010

As idiopath indicated, it is indeed a pretty big parking lot - and it's likely to be mighty empty on a Saturday, as well. For whatever that's worth.

In any case I'm in! I'll either need a ride and can contribute gas money, or (given a bit of advance notice) I can rent a car and provide transpo for 3 others.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:49 PM on April 14, 2010

I, of course, will provide gas money to whoever gives me a ride as well. I'm no moocher.
posted by maqsarian at 5:32 PM on April 14, 2010

Unfortunately, I have to work until noon which means fiercekitten and I won't be able to meet up with anyone until 12:15 or so.
We could always just join you all at Enchanted Forest a little late.

Hey everyone! This doesn't actually warrant it's own MeTa post, but it is germane to Portland area meeting-up, so cortex said I oughta mention it here.

This weekend, the 24th and 25th, I will be at the Stumptown Comics Festival! I'll be at table 52A with a delegation of Olympia area cartoonists, selling comics and shaking hands. If any of y'all are gonna be at the festival or were thinking of attending, I'd sure love to meet you! I'll be the devastatingly handsome shave-headed man, and will probably fly the Mefi colors on at least one of the days in the form of a t-shirt.

Much as I'd love to join you out at the proper meetup, festival events have pretty well packed my dance card. But if you're gonna be near the festival, please do pop by and say hello. It's only $6 a day to get in and, as seen in the above link, there's a ton of amazing guests and panels going on that weekend.

Hope to see you there! And in any event, have fun at the meetup! I'll catch you at the next one of those.

As it turns out, I will be unable to make it this Saturday. Bummer.

Oddly enough, I also will be unable to make it this Saturday. Conspiracy? (No.)
posted by Secretariat at 12:37 PM on April 21, 2010

Yeah, I'm out for the same external reason as Secretariat. Sorry, folks! Enchant the hell out that place for us.

I will have to miss this due to the other festival in town, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival, which runs Thursday through Sunday. 168 comics from across the U.S. at 7 venues on upper Hawthorne. If you're a comedy fan, check it out -- lots of smart, edgy, original comedy. Selflink: I'm appearing at the Bar of the Gods Saturday at 7:30pm, 4801 SE Hawthorne.

It turns out there's a book launch that my old grad program is putting on this Saturday, and my girlfriend needs to go to that, and she wants me to come along, which is probably a good idea as far as keeping up with contacts in my field. Sorry, guys. Hope you have fun, and if you want to do it again or move it to a less busy weekend, I'd totally be up for it.
posted by Caduceus at 4:44 PM on April 22, 2010

I'm afraid I have to pass this time around, also due to external factors. Sorry, have fun!
posted by spherical_perceptions at 5:17 PM on April 22, 2010

I'll second the motion to move it to another weekend, if it means a major boost in attendance. I'm not sure I could fully immerse myself in the "ambience" of the place with only a straggling handful of diehard stalwarts....
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:46 PM on April 22, 2010

I would also be fine with changing the date, if more people can come.
posted by maqsarian at 5:56 PM on April 22, 2010

Hey, crazy suggestion, and only because I really like meetups: maybe whoever can make it can still do a standard meetup on Saturday the 24th, say, East Burn at 6:30, like last time, and then we can do the super Enchanted Forest meetup next week, on May 1st, or maybe the 8th, whenever the most people can make it. Feel free to shoot it down if you want, but I for one would totally be up for some double-meetup action.

I'm with masqsarian, as I've been called in to work tomorrow, which sucks, and I really want to go. I even have TWO free passes to the place.
posted by Lutoslawski at 9:16 AM on April 23, 2010

I can't do it on the 1st (come on, people, it's Derby Day for cryin' out loud!), but probably could on the 8th, and I might well be able to make it to East Burn tomorrow evening as well...
posted by Nothing... and like it at 10:55 AM on April 23, 2010

OK so it's East Burn tomorrow, Enchantment in the near future?
posted by geckoinpdx at 1:05 PM on April 23, 2010

To be clear, does this mean that feature set "enchanted" and "mushrooms" will be moved to 10.8, and tomorrow we'll have an official 10.7 release with feature set "drinks"; or is it rather that we'll have a 10.7.1 "drinks" release followed by a later bugfix release "10.7.2" with the full "enchanted" feature set? Or is tomorrow a different fork altogether (probably forking 10.5 then as that had the most similar feature set)?

I'm up for East Burn drinks.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 3:17 PM on April 23, 2010

Like most everyone else it seems, fiercekitten and I can't make the enchanted trip tomorrow.
So, drinks at Eastburn @ 6:30 sounds good.

Concerning the aborted Enchanted Mushroom Trip, I suggested a new date: May 22nd.
This gives plenty of time for all to rearrange schedules, decided on time of day, etc.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:32 PM on April 25, 2010

I will likely be leaving for a two-month assignment on the 17th, so if the 22nd sticks, you crazy kids have fun for me.

(ps spherical...good work! 10.1 was also held at EastBurn as a makeup meetup for dersins)

Except why aren't you guys drinking booze in those pictures

What is the matter I am really worried now do you guys feel okay
posted by churl at 4:42 PM on April 28, 2010

No, we totally boozed it up, as best we could. The only problem was, there were no perfect manhattans, or manhattans perfect, to drink.

NOW WHY WAS THAT I WONDER
posted by maqsarian at 5:06 PM on April 28, 2010

Yeah forgot to add that I'm sorry I missed it too. My excuse was that, uh, well I was just assigned to a huge project at work and I'm kinda freaking the fuck out about it not to mention there were ...domestic influences in play.

So anyway what's the verdict on 10.8? Enchanted or not? And when?

nobody missed the marshmallows, ok I see how it is
posted by geckoinpdx at 11:06 PM on April 28, 2010

I have witnesses to attest to the fact that I mentioned marshmallows first thing when sitting down at the table. But never fear, we managed to successfully cope with our disappointment using large quantities of beer.
