NYC Meetup?

I met some of you lovely people during MeFi 10 NOLA (and others over Thanksgiving a few years back) and while NOLA is a bit of a blur (understatement), I do recall someone or some folks (you need not reveal yourself) asking me to call a meetup when I was next in New York. (I absolutely superpromise not to prattle on about federal sex offender registration this time.) I'm around Saturday May 1 through Tuesday May 4. How does a Sunday (May 2) afternoon or evening outing sound? I'm staying in the W. Village, but happy to travel.

There isn't such a thing as federal sex offender registration, is there? Jaysus.
posted by grobstein at 10:56 AM on April 16, 2010

Perhaps "national" would be a better word than "federal." It seems from their website that the federal government has a sex offender registration website, but all it does is provide a unified interface for accessing the states' sex offender registration information. I don't have any special knowledge about this, but my impression is that there's no actual "federal registration," just data hosting by the federal government.

I promised! But in short: yes, there is federal sex offender registration. Failure to do so subjects you to potential federal criminal penalties including imprisonment up to 10 years. I consider this not violating my promise because I am being brief.

I'll be there!

...but not to do the sex offender shuffle.

Sorry, I will be in LA. Enjoy your time in "the Big Apple"

I would like to attend. I promise to consume less alcohol (and therefore produce less spittle) this time around!

Sounds great ! I can only say 'likely' for now, though, with a slight preference for evening.

If I'm still alive and not in jail, I'd love to hang out!

I can personally vouch for *s. Her "strip-club manners" are impeccable. She is an absolute delight and if any of you choose not to meet her in person, the angels will weep for you.

Oh, and at the risk of it becoming a habit for NYC MeFites, you should definitely make time for a visit to Marie's Crisis while you're there.

I'm down.

Yrrr, I'll still be out of town!

If my legs haven't given out from the Great Saunter, I'll come.
posted by HotPatatta at 5:55 AM on April 17, 2010

If it's after 5:30, I'll come down after work!

Aside: I can never remember which is a real place and which is just made-up fairy land: the West Village or the Lower West Side. I've embarrassed myself a lot with that one.
posted by amicamentis at 6:55 AM on April 17, 2010

"Lower West Side" makes me think of the LES wearing a Spock-goatee.

I could be induced to leave my comfy Suburban Surroundings to venture forth into the very bowels of Manhattan.

Sweetness. The last time I was with y'all, we were at Revival. I'll throw that out there because I'm out of touch with where the kids go these days and I trust you'll let me know if that particular selection would deter you from showing up. How about early evening, like 5:30 or 6? (if you have a better venue idea, go for it.)
posted by *s at 2:53 PM on April 18, 2010

Oh, here we go.

Prepare yourself, *s! And welcome.

I'm in.

I was against Revival until I remembered that they have a lovely back patio. For the sake of organization and boosting this to the sidebar, how says everyone about 5pm on Sunday, May 2nd at Revival? Yea? Yay?

I'm bringing my pet otter. You may not interact with him while he is brining me absinthe.
posted by digitalprimate at 7:14 PM on April 21, 2010

I've never cared for brined absinthe. It's just a major hit to my sodium intake for not a lot of benefit.
posted by edbles at 6:05 AM on April 22, 2010

I have a big birthday thing to go to on the 1st and may be too hungover to cope with this, but if not, I'm there!
posted by Dormant Gorilla at 8:10 PM on April 22, 2010

Probably there!
posted by defenestration at 9:47 PM on April 22, 2010

Perhaps one could use absinthe as brine? Throw some dill and a couple of cucumbers in there...
posted by griphus at 6:58 AM on April 23, 2010

It's a good thing I ran into defenestration on the street today--otherwise I'd have totally missed this. I'll be there.
posted by ocherdraco at 1:04 PM on April 23, 2010

I've been running into people on the street and subway almost every day (give or take a few here and there) for a month or so now. It's eerie, but I really like it.

I mean, it makes sense that I'd run into ocherdraco, seeing that we work near each other, but other occurrences are seemingly less explainable.

I just noticed via Twitter that the Recumbent One is going to be flying here soon... I wonder if he'd be able to stop by as well?
posted by TrishaLynn at 5:31 AM on April 28, 2010

I think I'm there. Smokers, please allot one extra cigarette for me, since I've stopped smoking entirely except at meetups. I'll buy you drinks and make you feel weird when I insist you also take a dollar bill.
posted by zoomorphic at 11:30 AM on April 28, 2010

I won't feel weird!

Haven't been to Revival in a while, and a Sunday no less!
posted by smackfu at 7:46 AM on April 29, 2010

I've stopped smoking too, but have decided that vacation smoky treats do not count.

...make you feel weird when I insist you also take a dollar bill.

Not as weird as you'll feel when I actually take it.
posted by griphus at 7:48 PM on April 29, 2010

As a smoker I used to shamelessly bum cigarettes when I was out, but since I've "quit" I feel like I'm banished from the cabal and can no longer enjoy bumming privileges. Now I'm back to perversely insisting real smokers that they need my sweaty dollar bill in exchange for a precious, precious Marlboro light.
posted by zoomorphic at 1:30 PM on April 30, 2010

Speaking of smokers, consider this your friendly annual outdoor meetup reminder that in any given cluster of people where there are four or five cigarettes going at at any given time, some of us can't enjoy ourselves. If the main meetup action winds up happening outdoors, please keep this in mind.

Alas! It looks as if my pet otter an I have been preempted. I will raise a glass to you all in absentia.
posted by digitalprimate at 3:51 PM on May 1, 2010

I'll be there. Warning, I've been experimenting with make up all week long so I might show up looking a little funny (I like to field test shit).
posted by kkokkodalk at 7:48 PM on May 1, 2010

I might come to this; first meetup for me.

We're coming! Somewhere between 5 and 6, I believe.

Good luck IFDS, SN9! Take the F from York St to 14th!

Damn, OK I feel bad backing out, but I came home at 6 am last night...er...today. So I'll have to bow out as I do some non-fun things before the start of the work week =(.
posted by kkokkodalk at 12:13 PM on May 2, 2010

I'll be there as close to five sharp as I can manage in my current state. Looking forward to seeing everyone! I made snacky treats for you, but I left them on the counter in my haste to make a 7 a.m. flight. Boo.

Wow. Totally spaced on it. Although there was no I way I was leaving Brooklyn in this weather. It is balls outside.

No worries, the funk wasn't permanent. Nothing some air conditioning, a little Jane Austen, and a phone call to my folks couldn't fix.

Do I remember correctly that I started both a Metafilter Film Club and a Metafilter Weight Lifting Club?
posted by zoomorphic at 11:18 AM on May 3, 2010

(I think the latter was a joke but the former was not?)
posted by nobody at 11:30 AM on May 3, 2010

MeFi Film Club would be great. We could always incorporate the weightlifting and do reps while we discuss mise en scène.
