Manchester May MetaFilter Meetup Madness!

Men and women of Manchester: might you manage a meetup on the 19th or the 20th of May?

(Meaning 'Manchester, UK', in case of misunderstanding.)

The marvellous jonathanstrange (on a mission from Melbourne) and myself will be in your metropolis, and it'd be a massive mistake if we didn't make the most of this moment and meet some MeFites!

So, can you make it? (And maybe one of you can moot a meeting point?)

Gah! Ten days later and this could have been my first meet up.

Hope you have a wonderful time in Manchester.

Sounds super *fine* to me.
Somewhere near Manchester Victoria??

Gah! Two to three weeks later and this could have been my first meet up.

Hope you have a wonderful time in Manchester.

I'm entirely down with this shit.

If it had been at a weekend I might have made the trip over from Ireland. Sigh.

I'm entirely down with this shit.

You'd better be, what with flaking out on the last Manc meetup due to an alleged "baby".

As to venue, the Marble Arch has been the location for previous meetups, but either the Briton's or the Marble's sister establishment the Knott Bar would be suitable.

(The Briton's P has an entirely ludicrous selection of malt whiskies, while both the Marble Arch and the Knott Bar belong to the excellent microbrewery Marble Beers.)

Pics or it didn't happen

And I have it on very good authority that Electric Dragon is neither electric nor a dragon.

For shame!

Oh, poo, I'm in a play that week in Northenden. I guess I could make it into the city centre* and say hello.

* Can we write "centre" if we're discussing a UK meet-up? I think so!

Yay! I'm looking forward to it! Can't wait.

LOOK AT THE ARTIFACTS CLEARLY FAKE DUPLICATED SMOKE TRAILS SHOW US THE REAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE.

Ahem. Sorry. Not long off a 13 hour plane trip and still a bit wired. Jet lag not kicked in yet.

I'll be there. Any further location thoughts? The B's P looks mighty fine (plus all would get to see me gag on fine malt whisky) but is pretty far from victoria; seanyboy, would you be okay braving the trams/buses/pavements?
posted by thoughtless at 7:40 AM on April 29, 2010

Gah! 2 weeks later and I would bring another blue(-ish really more green) cake. You guys have fun though, and if the Marble's too far away, they just opened another micro brewery on Thomas Street. I was in there today, the first every customer, and can reassure everyone they are doing the cheese plate there too.

Marble! Marble! MARBLE! MARBLE!

Mindblowing cheese board!

Scientology impersonators!

Megahyperbeer!

The sweetest barley wine you'll ever throw up after!

And so, so close to Victoria. Alternately, there's a new Marble just opened on Thomas St, just behind the MadLab, but it may be prone to passing hipsters, with its' edgey Norther Quarter location.

pavements. Not trams. trams scare me.
posted by seanyboy at 8:47 AM on April 29, 2010

The B's P has the advantage of that beer garden we can (possibly) avail ourselves of.

Yes. I'm making weather based plans for a Manchester meet up.

I have a business trip (get me etc.) happening at some point in May. If the meet coincides with me being in the Dark True and Tender North I may well pop along.

I may be in Manchester on business that week, I'll try and make it.

I may or may not be able to make it - haven't planned that far advance yet... Hopefully I'm not supposed to be doing anything important then though.

I'm in!

Just noticed Sova's account is disabled. :( I hope it was over something more benign than that mess of a MeTa thread I see looming so large in her comment history.

So are we saying the 19th?
posted by Jofus at 2:46 PM on May 2, 2010

Let's.
posted by chrismear at 4:57 PM on May 2, 2010

I've put it on the sidebar thingummyjig for the 19th. Which I assume can be changed if necessary and I haven't buggered everything up for everyone. Now to decide on the venue.
posted by idiomatika at 5:38 AM on May 5, 2010

Venue: though I do love the Marble Arch, in all its majestically beery, foody glory, my vote goes for the Briton's Protection, in the spirit of trying somewhere new and of imploring Manchester's dour rain god to look upon us poor drinkers kindly.

I agree with thoughtless - plus there's a beer garden.

Am I repeating myself?

/checks.

Yes. I am repeating myself.

Also it is just up the road from the Peveril of the Peak. I have a personal belief that any pub named after a Walter Scott poem must necessarily be excellent.

I'm in. Probably.

The Briton's P has an entirely ludicrous selection of malt whiskies

This sounds very promising.

Also, thanks for sidebarring, idiomatika!

Can I ask for a re-run once I'm back in the UK next month?
posted by handee at 7:23 AM on May 6, 2010

How about a re-run in the form of xchmp's sheffield meetup proposal, or the long-mooted leeds meetup?
posted by thoughtless at 8:52 AM on May 6, 2010

Briton's Protection then? 7-ish on 19th?
posted by idiomatika at 4:11 AM on May 11, 2010

Well a long-mooted leeds meetup would suit me down to the ground, as that's probably where I'll be living when I get back to Blighty...
posted by handee at 4:32 AM on May 11, 2010

The Briton's Protection from 7-ish on Wednesday 19th it is!
posted by chrismear at 9:22 AM on May 14, 2010

OK! let's lock it in! Agreed, idiomatika... 7ish on the 19th at Briton's Protection.

See you next week!

Arse! Just realised that's wednesday, when I'm talking in Leeds about TBC. If you guys promise it to make it a late one, I'll catch you there! PROMISE! it's good for your foursquare badges.

Photos up here. Great beer + great snacks + great banter = another excellent northern meetup; 'twas a pleasure to meet you all either again or for the first time.

So I wondered what this "foursquare" thing is, and there's a rather neat summary of it here.
