Anybody up for a meetup in the Cincinnati area?

I've long wanted to have a few drinks with my fellow local MeFites so I decided to finally make the meetup request! I know some of you guys and gals live somewhat nearby. Here's what I'm thinking:

- Maybe spend some time at the Khron Conservatory
- Go somewhere for drinks/food
- Hope we remember the next day

If anybody is up for some drinks or food and have any suggestions for where to meetup around Cincinnati let's hear 'em! Nowhere too upscale please, I am a college student surviving week by week.

Well, we could go the the Krohn for a bit and then slide down to Zip's on Mt. Lookout Square, and get ourselves around some tasty Zipburgers and beers.

Oh, wait. I live in Florida.

please drink a beer for me and say hi to the cacao tree at the Krohn.

I'm in Dayton, but I would be willing to go down to a meetup in Cinci if there's enough demand! We have a lot going on this summer, but I could probably hack a weekend night in mid-May or June.

I'll keep an eye on this thread and contribute ideas if I get any. :) [Planning brain is mush, just now, but I did want to raise my hand!]

Sure - sounds great. The Krohn is nice, but eats nearby in Mt. Adams tend to be pricey. There's a nice place on Eastern Avenue, Maribelle's Tavern, that has a semi-private room in the second floor front.

But if you don't like that idea, I've got plenty more!

I'll promise to show up, but probably won't. It's how I roll.

Depending on the date--weekends will be better--I might be willing to road trip down from Fort Wayne.
posted by valkyryn at 3:30 AM on April 30, 2010

Depending on the week, I'll try to be in town. I love Zips, love love love Zips, but it's a little cramped, space-wise, and unless we're meeting in late afternoon on a Sunday, (after the Reds game is over) then we'll not be able to hang out and chit-chat because of the constant flow of people.

I suggest for meet-up purposes, we go to Milton's or Arnold's. I lean a little more towards Arnold's since they have (delicious) food and tables and a courtyard that allows for some talking.
posted by banannafish at 6:26 AM on April 30, 2010

Arnold's is a good choice - lots of room, tasty food, good atmosphere.
Deacon_blues, did you have a date in mind?
posted by tizzie at 7:39 AM on April 30, 2010

I'll be coming back to Cincinnati (from Boston!) for the Summer in about another week. So, I'd definitely be down for a meetup.

Also, I'd agree that Arnold's sounds like a good suggestion.

I could be convinced to go to either Maribelle's or Arnold's (or Milton's for that matter), depending on the sitter situation and travel schedule. Somebody thrown down dates so I can be more specific.

It's a terrifying prospect (socially speaking) but I'd do my best to come meet all of you. deacon blues, I think this is your baby since you suggested it...dates?

Cooker girl, I hope you do come! I have always wanted to meet you since I followed your askme questions about your kitchen.

Really, tizzie?! How lovely! And I see you're one of my favorite food writers! We have much to discuss.

MetaFilter rocks.

I was thinking the end of May, perhaps the 28 or 29 (Friday and Saturday)?
I should be free both of those evenings, and really as far as places go I haven't been to most of the suggestions thus far - totally open to whatever you guys would like to decide on.

The Conservatory is open until 5 P.M. on both days, and the Butterfly Show is currently ongoing - I've been before and aside from the conservatory being beautiful on it own the butterflies are really fantastic.

Well, if you guys are going to Arnold's, it is probably best that I cannot go. We are sure to run into my dad there, and he will ask me who are all those assholes with me who are making all that noise, and it will only go downhill from there.
posted by toodleydoodley at 7:08 PM on April 30, 2010

Aw, shucks! Thanks, cooker girl.

And toodleydoodley, if your dad is cool enough to hang out at Arnold's, then he's probably already on Metafilter.

*looks around fearfully* - You think somebody mighta gave my dad a computer?!

No, my dad's the scary, old (really old) guy drinking quietly by himself by the front door, gently haranguing Laura (the bartender) and scaring the crap out of drunk hipsters by "accidentally" letting them see the enormous Marine Corps tattoo he had put on circa 1950-51 when he participated in the landing at Inchon and the Chanjin Reservoir campaign.
Please do not feed or tease him or offer to buy him drinks. He will gravely decline them while giving you a funny look, and you will be left looking nervously over your shoulder the rest of the night.

Aaah, Arnolds and its wonderfully varying clientele.

I'm down with Arnold's, but the prior description just gave me a pang of paranoia. Last thing a slightly tipsy young gay man needs is toodleydoodley's father watching him out of the corner of his eye.

One small caveat - I am a poor college student, so nobody be too surprised when I order one appetizer and spend the rest on drinks. Theoretically we could have a little picnic-type deal on the conservatory grounds on a budget but that is of course theoretical.

I'm a poor planner it seems :( I want to do this though guys and gals, I'd really like to get to meet you in person. How does the 28th sound? And again, I'm totally open to suggestions on where to eat/drink but happy hours and cheap bar food are always a plus.
posted by deacon_blues at 3:57 PM on May 1, 2010

28th sounds good to me. I'm not too familiar with Cincy proper however, so I can't really suggest any locations.
posted by aheckler at 4:46 PM on May 1, 2010

toodleydoodley, we'll just slap a fake mustache on you and you'll be good to go! The 28th works best for me, so I'll cross my fingers that's the day that's decided upon.
posted by cooker girl at 4:54 PM on May 1, 2010

The 28th is a weekend I'll be out of town -- so raise a glass for me!

Maybe if this meetup goes well, we can plan another? I've been dying for a MetaFilter meetup!

Oh, sorry deacon - he is not that kind of menace at all. First of all he's 80. It's really just that, as an 80-year-old ex-Marine, he has the kind of finely-developed hairy eyeball that makes people nervous, particularly people who are fucking with him. He will not start anything with you, ever.

I have been with him when drunks tried to cut the fool around him, and he just fixes them with a hawk-like stare, and then they fall over trying to get away from this little old man with a cane and a fishing cap.

Friday the 28th works for me, and I can be pretty flexible time-wise - afternoon or evening or both.
posted by tizzie at 7:18 AM on May 2, 2010

Alrighty -

Friday the 28th, at Arnold's (no offering toodleydoodley's father drinks!) - what times are people working with? I don't even know if the conservatory is an option considering its a Friday and I imagine most people are going to be busy during the day. What time works well for those planning to attend?

Is Arnold's the kind of place we might want to make reservations for on a Friday evening in Cincinnati?
posted by deacon_blues at 12:17 PM on May 2, 2010

deacon, you are a gentleman and a scholar ;-)

If I'm lucky enough to be in town that week, I'll see you guys there - and I'll keep the old man off our backs!

8pm or so? I can't stay out too late, I have a wedding the next day in Columbus.

PS- What should I shout as I come in the door to ensure I find my fellow MeFites in short order? Vote your preference:

1- "Who here likes pancakes?!"
2- "Barkeep, one plate of beans please!"

I just bought a plane ticket to return to Cincinnati on the 26th, in honor of this meet-up.*

Also, it's a Firework Friday after the Reds/Astros game, so if we're at Arnold's, we should plan on getting there after first pitch is thrown out and staying until after the game is over to enjoy the fireworks!

*Not entirely true.

This could double as my going away party (well, my third going away party; the more the better) as I will be an expat MeFite soon: I am moving to London (start my next four years of college there in the Fall) and leave in June (read: this means all of you will always have an air-mattress to crash on should you visit the UK)...

Where is Arnold's?

Tizzie - it will be so nice to see you again!

What's the parking situation like near there? Metered on the street, or maybe there's a garage nearby?
posted by aheckler at 3:20 AM on May 10, 2010

Usually plenty of metered spots nearby.

don't think they police the meters after 5-6 pm, IIRC. I have never had to walk more than a block or two, even on friday night

Consider yourself partially convinced already. I figure if we do $5 tickets by the time the whole Arnold's thing is over we could effectively walk into the stadium in the 3rd and you can sit anywhere.

We're driving up to Madeira(?), but might not mind meeting up with you all if you're out at midnight-ish.
