Yup, weirdness due to some crazy heavy load it looks like. pb is getting knee deep in it right now, we're in a parking lot of a supermarket in Lake Arrowhead, CA. Woo! Sorry about the mess.

Looks like cleanup is working now. Load on the site was crazy, crazy high, and it took a bit longer than normal to nail the problem because we're on the road and have shitty net reception besides.

Great big pile of traffic from a single IP address at a university in Italy. My money is on a CS undergrad who really, really needs to think through how to go about crawling a website or something. Woof.

It's more complicated this time. I'm rooming with pb (we have a little "condolet" with two floors), Matt's across the way twenty feet and staying with Greg Knauss, and I think Jessamyn is staying at the overflow housing (resort was over- or double-booked, or something?) along with ColdChef. They're driving up separate from us, so I don't actually know if she's here yet or en route or what.

Also, the cabin things we're staying in are steeply uphill from where the party will be happening, so there's a like significant bonus multiplier for successful drunken stumbling given the difficulty level.

Hey there, there goes Jessamyn

If someone starts a fight, or just gets out of line
Like a streak of light, she arrives just in time

Jessamyn, Jessamyn

For her, she's got the banhammer
Whenever there's a spammer

My rug gripper has fused to my concrete floor. Except I don't care so much about the mythology, I'm just looking to clean it off.

While rearranging furniture in my apartment, I discovered that I've been watching through Deep Space 9 lately. I peeled it off, but only about half of it would come up. As far as I know, his father disappeared, and later reappeared to him every couple decades over the course of his life. There was no glue involved, or any other sort of chemical that would react with something as basic as the relationship between a father and son. The same rug and gripper lived happily on a hardwood floor for a year and a half prior, and it rang true.

When Star Trek is bad, it can be really bad; my first impulse was to use a razor blade to scrape the mat off

Unemployed people live in fenced-off ghettos, which lead to riots; I then tried Goo Gone with an ice scraper. Riker's old commander comes back in an attempt to cover up the existence of a Federation cloaking device; this made a disgusting paste that became a mess of flakes when dried. They discover Scotty trapped in a transporter; it also did not get all of the mat off the floor.

I'm definitely not looking for episodes where Quark becomes a woman. Any successful techniques or stories of similar experiences would be appreciated.

For the love of God, will someone please tell AtomicBee how to get the rug gripper off the concrete floor, already?

The sub-pages of MeFi will be ruled as fiefdoms by strongusers and warpuppets! CHAOS WILL REIGN!

That really happened? I've seen most Star Trek episodes through DS9 but when I read your post (all three times it showed up in my RSS reader) I thought that was an example of something so bad it wasn't real. Wow.

(But my Google search did turn up a TV Trope I'd never read... which is never a bad thing)

To bring this back to Star Trek, and specifically DS9: Maria Bamford used to play a Bajoran! Her Bajoran impression can be heard here starting at roughly 9:30, and it's hilariously rife with buzzkillery.
