PDX: In Ur City, Drinking Ur Beerz May 27, 2010 8:55 AM   Subscribe

Portland, OR: I am here, lets drink some beer.

Still recovering from the 17 hour drive yesterday, but I am not starting work until the 7th, so I am flexible for just about any time / kind of meet up between now and then.
posted by mrzarquon to MetaFilter Gatherings at 8:55 AM (67 comments total)

Oh, man, you drove straight through? Crazy person. Anyway. Yeah. Beers. Hooray for beers. If work doesn't intervene I'm always up for (down with?) beers, 'cause, y'know, beers.
posted by Nothing... and like it at 9:02 AM on May 27, 2010

beer beer beer beer beer beer beer.

And while I seriously am still waiting for the Enchanted Forest (I already got my tickets, dammit), beers in the interim with mrzarquon are in order.

What about June 5th at the usual place (East Burn, 6:30?)??? Or should we give mrzarquon a more proper Portland introduction and take him to Sassy's.
posted by Lutoslawski at 10:21 AM on May 27, 2010

Uh, I'll pass on Sassy's....

Cortex mentioned Prost as a potentially awesome meetup spot, German beir, outdoor seating, foodcart proximity.

I'll be visiting Portland on June 5th!
posted by anoirmarie at 10:38 AM on May 27, 2010

Prost is indeed pretty great, based on the first improvised visit me and Secretariat gave it a couple weeks ago. Atmosphere is basically just a bar, but the food and drink are the closest I've been to Munich in years. Lots of nice Bavarian taps. And they'll serve you a liter mass.

It's got a big outdoor patio with picnic tables, so if it's not raining there's plenty of space for a meetup crew, and their patio connects to a small fleet of food carts so if you're not so down with the German food you've got a bunch of options.

Right on Skidmore and Mississippi, so it's pretty accessible from most places by bus.

Breakside Brewery just opened. Their own beer isn't ready yet, but they have deep-fried pickles…

Yay! June 5th is a good date for me, and I'll go anywhere.
posted by maqsarian at 11:08 AM on May 27, 2010

This could be a warning or a suggestion: the Starlight Run and Parade are June 5th, so most of downtown will be a big mess of people for most of the evening. It'll also have an impact on buses and MAX on both sides of the river.

joking about sassy's.

Prost sounds fun. I've never been, but I've heard great things. I'm down.
posted by Lutoslawski at 11:17 AM on May 27, 2010

5 June would work for me (I hope). I'd love to try Prost-- haven't been there yet despite the fact that it's totally within nice-weather walking distance of my house.

Somebody please bring me a voodoo donut!
posted by anoirmarie at 11:21 AM on May 27, 2010

The sad truth about voodoo donuts-- and I fully expect to be excoriated for this-- is that they're not actually very good. They're funny and and all, but most of their donuts sacrifice being good for the sake of being wacky. Come on people, you may not want to admit it, but in your heart of hearts, you know it's true.
posted by Nothing... and like it at 11:35 AM on May 27, 2010 [1 favorite]

Some of their donuts are more good than stunty, though, and that's enough for me. The bacon maple bar is unimpeachable, for example.
posted by cortex (staff) at 12:06 PM on May 27, 2010

I've never had the bacon maple bar, though I really want to. I don't go to Voodoo very often, and when I do, I invariably get distracted and order something else.
posted by maqsarian at 12:20 PM on May 27, 2010

Donuts aside, I can't wait for this meet up! It will be my first.

it's true that the stunty, doughnuts from voodoo are really not good at all. But the French crawler? Oh man....pretty damn tasty. Of course, they've got nothin' on Annie's.
posted by Lutoslawski at 1:38 PM on May 27, 2010

When I got the maple bacon bar, it was 1:30am at Voodoo Too and they had no bacon. Despite the outraaaaaage, the porkless maple bar was still damn tasty.

You know, I was JUST thinking about suggesting a meetup last night. Beaten to the punch.

OK, 10.9 at Prost on the 5th (and damn the suburbanites), and 10.9.1 at Enchanted Forest on the 20th? Or is that too soon?
posted by geckoinpdx at 3:49 PM on May 27, 2010

um. that's awesome.
posted by Lutoslawski at 3:55 PM on May 27, 2010

I don't think the 20th is too soon (the more meetups, the better, I say), but could we do Enchanted Forest on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday? I have to work the other days.
posted by maqsarian at 4:18 PM on May 27, 2010

So, are we decided on Prost on 5 June? Should we start early-ish to beat the Saturday crowds? 6?
posted by Nothing... and like it at 4:50 PM on May 27, 2010

I was looking at the wrong month, apparently. How's the 19th sound?

Also, 6ish works for me but I'll be late, as per.
posted by geckoinpdx at 5:23 PM on May 27, 2010

I can't make the meetup but I'll offer some party favors. If anyone who is attending is willing to swing by and pick them up, I'll pass along 100 tickets to the Chinese Garden that are good anytime.

It's a perk of my job and God knows there aren't better people in the world to give them to. If you're able to take them to the meetup, memail me and I'll leave them in will call with your name on them--just give me a day or so to get them in will call.

whenever I trying to write comment in Hindu Astrology sections it is saying that the thread is closed what to do
posted by KPAstrology at 11:27 PM on May 27, 2010

Hi, KPAstrology, and welcome to MetaFilter! As you seem to have noticed, we don't have any open threads on Hindu astrology at the moment. MetaFilter threads close after 30 days, and there is no way to comment in them after closure. However, we do have many open threads on a variety of topics; perhaps you would be interested in commenting on one of them. Who knows, eventually, someone may make a post about Hindu astrology! After you've commented for a while, you'll have the ability to make a front page post of your own if you want to, about something interesting you've found on the Internet. If you decide to make a front page post, be sure not to link to your website (like you did in your comment above) or to any of your friends' websites in the post; this could cause your account to be closed. If you have any questions, be sure to check the Frequently Asked Questions, or you can send a message using the Contact Form. One of our friendly administrators should be pleased to hope you. Thanks, and enjoy your time on MetaFilter!

What he excruciatingly politely said. Link removed, do not try that again, KPAstrology, if you have any interest in not being banned for linkfarming, though that's totally what's going to happen because you pretty clearly signed up to linkfarm. But it's kind of neat to have you announce your intentions in public like this so hey.

Random, but Portland MeFite related thing (and I'll probably be asking this at the meetup as well, so I can say its on topic, or more on topic than Hindu Astrology): I am trying to help find a home for a four month old corgi puppy, currently staying with a family member in Ohio who is unable to care for it. I figure its Portland, so statistically someone here would want one or know of someone who wants one.

Anywhere there is a good home for the animal, right now. Just trying to sort out options with the family.

fiercekitten and I will be there.
Concerning doughnuts, we could bring some of the 'burbs finest from Sesame Doughnuts.
Perhaps someone could bring in some Voodoo and we could have a taste off.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:02 AM on May 31, 2010

Oh... I like Sesame Doughnuts. When I eat the actual seed covered ones I can pretend I'm eating something super healthy.

We could probably bring Tonalli's donuts, if we are having a taste-off. Prost does offer some german food, but I think they're pretty ok with outside food- there's a bunch of food carts in the lot right next to their deck that have pretty much anything you could want (except german beer or donuts).

But...but...German beer and donuts are such a natural combination!!

posted by Greg_Ace at 8:21 PM on May 31, 2010

Speaking of donuts and hamburger, I had a Voodoo doughnut hamburger at The Original downtown recently. It was quite a bit better than I thought it would be, but I don't think it's the kind of thing I would order again. I did not have German beer with it, unfortunately.

I can't make the meetup but I'll offer some party favors.

I have these, and will be bringing them with me. Thanks, karmaville!

Looks like I won't be able to make this one, I'm afraid. My girlfriend is graduating and there are a series of activities involved with that all day and evening on June 5th. Prost is super awesome, though, except that it's very small inside. If you can somehow avoid the Rose Festival's cursed rain and sit outside, though, you'll have a blast. Good luck.
posted by Caduceus at 12:26 AM on June 1, 2010

yeah! I'm in town visiting family, so I will be able to come to my first Pacific NW meetup, and possibly meet a mod IRL for the first time, provided you're coming cortex.

We are, by far, the most modest. No other city can dream of matching our modesty. Any other city who tries ends up weeping in the corner, astonished and frightened (and a little aroused) by the sheer might and awesome power of our glorious modesty.
