Any NYC Mefites interested in a Board gaming group?

Was in London since Jan and had the pleasure of being able to go to a weekly board game group at a pub from about 6-11, loved being able to play with loads of people and varieties of different games.

I'm back home now and the people I know aren't remotely interested in board games, so I thought I may as well ask the grey and see if anyone would be interested in a Bi-Monthly(Monthly/Weekly) board-gaming group during the weekend somewhere accessible in Manhattan (I live in Westchester so I would prefer it be easy to get to from Grand central).

We can discuss all those details later on, but for now I'm curious about general interest. Any takers?

Sadly, I don't live in New York, but that sounds like an awesome idea. If anyone wanted to do this in Seattle, MeMail me (don't comment here) and I'll start a new thread.

YES. I've been meaning to do this myself for some time. I have a lot of "German"-style board games that I rarely get to play.

Once there's a quorum we can see what the consensus about location, time, etc. would be. Personally I usually just ignore Manhattan on the weekends, but I could be persuaded to commute.

I don't know that I'd be available on a regular basis, but I imagine I would pop in every now and again. Yay games!

I listen to (video) gaming podcasts ALL DAY. And I’ve been curious to try some of the more hardcore “euro” style ones. So YES. There’s this lovecraft thing that me and some friends got halfway through, but never finished that I REALLY want to try. I’d be more reliable on a monthly basis.

I live upstate so I'm not in a position to, you know, officially sign up for something like this, but I'll be keeping my eye on this thread. I often visit the city and hope to move there soon, and this sounds like a great idea.

If you're looking for establishments that would be conducive to such a group, 88 Orchard is a little cafe on the Lower East Side that has a lot of board games and a comfy basement-level area.

Not in New York or Seattle, but I would look into finding a good boardgame store and seeing if they have open game nights. When I was at UT I got into boardgames via quiz bowlers who also played board games at Great Hall Games (then) near campus. They had miniature nights and RPG nights, but Friday nights were for boardgames. That led to knowing more boardgamers in general and getting invited to various groups that had weekly games around town including the legendary RussCon.

As Smart Dalek mentioned, there are at least a few MeFites who are also members of NerdNYC. We have a monthly boardgame night at Think Coffee on Mercer St. The next one is this coming Friday, the 11th, at 7pm. It's open to all!

I am very interested, with the proviso that I will be spending at least a weekend or two a month at my apartment in Boston.

I'm also interested in Nerd NYC. Is it just a forum? Can I just show up at one of their events without being a "member"? Cause if a bunch of MeFites go to their board game nights, I'd love to tag along.

Well, those of us not in the big apple could set up some type of skype simulcast board game thing. We'd each have to have our own boards and have to manually manage each one as the game progreses.

Eideteker, NerdNYC revolves around the forum, but that's just the nucleus for a community of NYC nerds. In addition to the board game nights that Miskatonic mentioned, there is also Recess and The Gotham Gaming Guild. For Recess or the boardgame nights, yeah, you can pretty much just show up. GGG takes a bit more planning. Membership is really just a matter of registering on the forum and participating.

Plenty of other bits going on too. I live in the UK now and I really miss my nerds from NerdNYC.

I've been playing the iPod Touch version of Catan for a while. It's one of the games that I play constantly. I don't know how well that experience translates to live gaming, but I'm willing to try. I'm guessing that the metagame is a lot more fun.

So Carcassone is iAvailable?

Guess I'll have to remove more music to make room. I'm guessing that eventually I'll just have games on my iPod.

There's a bpoardgaming meetup group in NJ I drop in on from time to time (http://www.meetup.com/BoardgamesNJ/) so there's bound to be people in NYC itself who do this sort of thing.

I'm in Manhattan more or less every other Saturday afternoon to do a tabletop RPG at the Compleat Strategist and would probably be up for going to a boardgaming thing afterwards, or even making the trip just for a gaming evening. (My usual companion is not a MeFite, but is a much bigger board game geek than I am. I might be able to drag him along.)

For those who are nervous about playing those newfangled games, I find board gamers are more than happy to induct fresh blood in a friendly manner. It's also pretty common for somebody to bring a new game they just bought and try it out on the spot, which puts everyone on an equal footing.

I used to be good-for-my-age at Scrabble, but quit when my classmates stopped being a challenge. This has left me playing like a talented twelve-year-old, which is good for everyone's self-esteem but mine.

Somehow, despite my inherent geekiness, in my formative years I missed out on the board games other than Scrabble and a few other mainstream ones.

I'd be interested in coming if people wouldn't be annoyed by someone who doesn't know what she's doing. I'm going to need some serious training wheels, and I have no idea if this will be something I like or not.

KMZ I've already talked with the people at the Compleat Strategist and they do have a monthly board game night but I feel that it would be very fun for us to have our own metafilter game night, instead of having to explain what metafilter is we can just immediately get to gaming.

miskatonic thanks for the invite, I'm going to nerdnite speed dating at galapagos so I'm missing it sadly, could you give your opinion on Think Coffee as a venue tho?

So I'm not making it official, we will have our board game day long geekabration on Saturday the 26th from 1pm to 11pm, I'll plan on being there the whole time, people can come and go the whole time and its going to be great!

Actually, I'm still confused. So far it looks like a place hasn't been determined? Or has it? I see a date and time, but yea, there isn't an official post/reply that the meetup link is linking too. Also I'm highly unsure about which game is being played or how much we're supposed to know before coming (links to edition rules? list of games to bring? what what now?) For those of us noobs to board gaming beyond Parker Brothers family night stuff, this edition and whatnot talk is probably going a little over our heads.

I'm sorry that it wasn't clear enough, we will be at the Cafe 88 orchard on Saturday 26 from 1pm to 11pm, the link has been put up on the metatalk page and there will be a facebook event made when I get home and off the iPhone.

And don't worry about not knowing anything about boardgames, just think of this as a wine tasting, without the wine and pretension. Honestly I don't remember exactly how most of my games are played, I have 3 that I bought recently that I have no idea how to play I hope someone else will know how it's played.
posted by Del Far at 4:11 PM on June 20, 2010

Now that the location is set, here's the link again for 88 Orchard. That's the Yelp page; the place doesn't seem to have a working website. It's at the corner of Orchard and Broome in the Lower East Side. Or, if you just remember the name of the cafe, you'll automatically know the address.

Just checking in to let anyone know that we had to end it early at 8:42 instead, sorry but they would let us play on the first floor on weekends.

I guess if they won't allow laptops upstairs on weekend, board games are probably out, too. If they're so short on space, though, I wonder why they close the downstairs so early.

I'm at Penn Station now; I just missed the 9:14, so I have to wait for the 10:07...

Just got home. Had a great time. Company was truly awesome. Space was smaller than I'd thought it would be.

The grilled cheese sandwich was heavenly. Artisinal cheese from somewhere. I forget. The awesomeness of the company drowned out the explanation.

I have to say there were two stand out games for me. The aforementioned Cash and Guns and the science one that was like Apples or something.

Both took minimal equipment and lots of ACTING!

Of course I acted the fool as usual. But I didn't win.

We must do this again.

Many thanks go to Del Far for organizing this and being a cool godfather.

Not home yet, car managed to get a flat tire after I left, waiting around for tow truck now, will post my comments about meetup later.

Sorry about the flat tire. That sounds miserable. I hope you made it home soon after you posted the above.

I had a great time playing games with you guys - and I hope we can do this again.

Okay finally got home at about 7am this morning, worst night ever of my life, I'm trying to think about how great the meetup was and the previous few days were to balance out the living hell of last night.

The meetup consisted of a game of Zombie Fluxx, Kill Doctor Lucky, Ca$h & Gun$, Mad Scientist University, and then we split into two groups and played Dominion and Forbidden Island.

I had a lot of fun and can't wait for us to have another meetup, just need to get a whole different place to play at, somewhere with better accessibility and tables. I'm glad I got to play Kill Doctor Lucky and Forbidden Island. Both were fantastic and so much fun, also very easy to understand, glad I went out to buy them before the meetup, they are now 2 of my most favorite games.

Hello to Del Far. Sorry to hear about your trials and travails getting home.

Having said that, what are your plans on posting pictures?

Also, I am spending some time checking out venues that have large areas with tables. I know some bars in Manhattan that might suffice, but I won't post a name until I have more data.

Thanks again for bringing us together. And I apologize if I was loud. I get that way sometimes when I'm having fun.

The thing about Manhattan is that it's generally short of space. Whenever you see a spacious apartment or cafe on tv that's in "New York", you can be pretty sure it's a set, because they couldn't fit the cameras in a real city location. I actually thought the basement was pretty good, for a cafe in that area.

I seem to recall there were a few folks from upstate. If you wanted to move to the suburbs north of the city proper, then any Panera or similar chain will do.

This was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for coming out.

Next time I would like more time and more space. I don't want to venture out of the city (unless it can be made super-convenient, without driving). But maybe we can rent out some kind of private room.

I'll also do a feasibility study of my apartment (I have air-conditioning now!). It's not huge, but it also doesn't have cafe customers and waitstaff bustling around. If I get a folding table and a couple more chairs, I should be able to accommodate 12-ish people for 2-3 simultaneous boardgames.

True I'm upstate, but there's no need to go outside the city on my account. Going further north would actually make my trip longer, since anytime I'm going anywhere near the city, I always start by taking public transportation to Manhattan and then going to my destination from there.

That sounds great.

Del Far, I'm really sorry to hear about your horrendous night after the meetup. Do you think you'll have a chance to upload the photos though?
