Summer Party in Central Vermont July 5, 2010 10:56 AM   Subscribe

turtlegirl and I are having our annual bash on 24 July this year and wanted to extend an invite to MeFites who may be interested.

The party will be an all-day affair (2pm-?) to let people drift by when it is convenient to them, but it also helps us as we have limited parking. Out-of towners are welcome to pitch a tent -- or to crash on the floor -- on a first-come, first sleep basis. I can provide a list of somewhat local lodging options if need be.

We'll have a log (small keg) of local beer, some homebrews, and the grill out. Locals are encouraged to bring side dishes if they can. Out-of-towners can bring beverages if they feel a need to bring something. In the evening we'll make a fire so s'mores can be had.

If you are interested in attending:
1) MeMail and I will send you directions and/or answer any questions
2) NO PETS. Sorry. With the llamas we can't have dogs around. Seriously.
3) Please consider carpooling if you can.
4) Bring any acoustic instruments you can!

Hope to see folks.

so, not to derail, but when does metatalk mefi gatherings phase out, and mefirl phase in?

We're still testing and we haven't figured out how the transition is going to specifically work out. Can we please start up a new thread if that's what people want to talk about?

This sounds awesome. Seems nigh impossible, but I will see if I can make it.

I wish I could! Not that I'm stalkerish, but I love living vicariously through your farm pictures. You have beautiful animals.

Oh, I really, really want to, but it's dependent on several factors. So, definitely maybe.

What's the kid-friendly quotient for this gathering? I've got two small guys that are mostly better behaved than dogs...mostly. A three hour drive might be insane for my first meet-up but this sounds like loads of fun.

Also definitely maybe as I'll be in Vermont on this date. Depends on how much I want to drive after having driven up from RI.

victoriab: Well-behaved children are welcome! The no-dogs rule is because we use our llamas to guard the sheep and don't want them to encounter canines so they will react to predators like coyote. Don't want a friend's dog to encounter the llama so we don't lose friends!

It makes me sad that I wasn't a Mefite while I was in undergrad at Dartmouth, or I'd definitely be in for things like this.

I'll come if someone's up for carpooling from Australia.

I will be back from BKLYN for the 23rd and the 24th only, so this works eggsilently for me, barring some home construction disaster. I can drive people from the Hanover/Norwich area too.

Thanks. That's good to know, billtron, because those who need a place to stay may have to look in the Hanover/Norwich area for lodging.

The local law school publishes a list of accommodations in the area. They list how far each place is from the school, and the school is about 5 miles from us:

Updates:

The small keg is now a 1/2 keg (5+ cases!) of Wolaver's Organic IPA!

We will also have a sheet cake baked by our local bakery/friend.

And now that turtlegirl has officially completed her MLIS we will be celebrating that as well!

Looking forward to seeing some of you fine folks!

bookrach and I were just idly wondering what would be good to bring. Ice cream? Fruit? Something for the grill?
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 6:27 PM on July 21, 2010

i think grill items will be a good idea. Fruit would also be nice. I have some sausages and plan to make some burgers. we will also make hummus, a tri-coloured pasta salad, and our black bean & corn salad.

Yay!

Sounds great! I am bringing my broccoli salad, something to throw on the grill, and maybe some fresh veggies in balsamic vinaigrette. See you soon!
