Philadelphia meetup in July?
We've been pretty good about having regular meetups lately--let's keep the streak going. I've been wanting to check out City Tap House in West Philly and just got a "tweet" that their local drafts are $2 off on Fridays this summer. If people are interested, how about July 16 or 30?

I'm probably in if it's on the 16th. It'd be my first meetup!

That is very near where I live. Chances are, I would attend.

I'm down if it's wheelchair accessible. If it's not, no biggie.

It's accessible, angrycat. The door to the elevator is between a coffeeshop and a JimmyJohns, go down the hallway, take elevator up to second floor.

The food is good but overpriced. The draft list, however, is extensive and excellent.
two lights and I would be more likely to make it on the 16th.

I definitely can't make the 16th and likely not the 30th, but I wanted to chime in and say hi so you don't think I don't love you anymore.

(It's well within the Penn Absorption Zone, for anyone concerned about heading into West Philly.)
And it's the middle of Summer so students are thin on the ground, for anyone concerned about heading into the Penn Absorption Zone.

There're Jimmy Johns in Philly? That's pretty great, I had no idea they went that far east.
I have just got to move to PA...

Wait, a location easily agreed on, it's accessible, and only one person has scheduling problems? Impossible. Obviously this is a trap. We need to cancel immediately and re-establish the necessary levels of uncertainty and debate.

I would love to attend another Philly meetup! The 16th works best for me as well. The 30th is right out.

Eh, I know they're beloved, but given that we invented the hoagie here, I get my sammiches from mom & pop shops.
I definitely can't make the 16th and likely not the 30th, but I wanted to chime in and say hi so you don't think I don't love you anymore.
Much appreciated, slacker.

Let's call it for the 16th. Someone set a time and we'll move over to IRL.

Aww, sorry schroedinger! Yes, please come to the next one. So that $2 off deal only lasts until 7pm. Want to make it for 6pm? Personally, I prefer a later time on a Friday, like 8pm, but if people are up for cheaper drinks, let's make it a happy hour... Any opinions?

I would very much like to get in a few cheap drafts, but I work just a few blocks away, so if we do make it 8 I might head over a bit earlier than that anyway. Anyone else is welcome to join.

I just realized that wasn't very clear. Phrasing, man!
How about this: I will be there at 6-6:30. Anyone who wants to join me for happy hour is more than welcome, even if we make the official start time 8 p.m.

Compromise and make it a 7pm start time? And mefites will be there at happy hour, so that option is available too. Ok, off I go to IRL.

Btw, is it wrong to say "University City?" Like, is it just "west Philly?" I do not claim to understand the politics/motivations involved in naming areas of the city. I mean, apparently I live in G-Ho, but I would never say that.

There is a vocal contingent in West Philly that flyered the neighborhood a while ago with the slogan "It's West Philly, 'University City' is a marketing strategy.'" I see where they're coming from in wanting to undermine the University's attempt to bolster its image among the parents of prospective undergrads by segregating itself from the surrounding neighborhoods which while less safe are also more racially diverse. But I also think there's no point in denying that there is a bubble around Penn and calling the area within that bubble Univeristy City makes sense to me. I don't feel very strongly about it one way or the other.

I see why it would be a marketing strategy like The S. reports (when I worked at Penn I heard both equally, depending on the context - UPHS as a neighbor vs. where the ED shooting victims came from), but there are plenty of other parts of West Philly that have sub-names (Overbrook, Carroll Pk, etc).

The bitterness towards calling things University City seems to be most concentrated, say, between 46th and 50th; I don't think anyone really objects to calling 40th and Walnut University City.
That being said, most of the "vocal contingent" that flyered the neighborhood probably wouldn't be in the neighborhood if it weren't for Penn. I don't think too many of them are affiliated with Penn, but Penn has enough influence that the neighborhood is probably different than it would be otherwise.
