Was the MetaFilter server down for a couple of hours earlier today?

I think so. I couldn't get on for a while.

*wipes sweat from his forehead, sighs deeply*

Yeah. It was.

Ok, I thought maybe it was my ISP.

Big time. I've been trying since 5:30 EST and just connected.

I thought it was a shakedown for more donations. "You want MeFi? Do ya? Be nice to have a better server, wouldn't it?"

Now that it's back though, the anti-climacticalizationalishness is a little like being a guilty smoker - you re-indulge, and then go "Well, that wasn't quite as pleasant as my anticipation promised it would be..."

Or maybe that's just the beer talking. Somehow, subconsciously, I expected there to be all these new posts, but I guess nobody at all could connect, including me.

Disappointing, but praise be to the bitgods (and Matt) that MeFi is back. *bows*

tell me about it, stavros, i was to-tal-ly freaking out. i thought: 'maybe matt's installing the new server? but that can't be; it's too soon! have the terrorists already won? administrator, please hope me!'

then i thought that maybe the domain name wasn't resolving properly and i tried to connect using the ip number...to no avail. with no metafilter, i've had to 'do work' all morning...and it wasn't fun, let me tell you.

what a relief.

Friday at work without MeFi would have just about done me in. I might have actually had to do some work or something.

Does anyone else feel that their dependence on Metafilter is a bit, well...unhealthy?

Denial ain't no river in Egypt.

Yup.

I have MetaFilter with my coffee every morning - it's much better than doughnuts. This morning I kept thinking of the picture of the cup of coffee on the MetaFilter server, while I drank my own. Considering all of the things I could have been thinking of, I have to say, why yes, luser, you may be on to something!

I clicked and clicked and clicked. Even the assclowns site didn't work.

And when I also couldn't post to blogger, I thought my company had caught on and started shutting me down, which would leave me with my home connection (which truly runs at about 50 bytes per second -- I read faster than the letters come out of the line sometimes).

Which left me wondering: is there a place where people can go to check the status of all big sites? If not, shouldn't there be? Matt would post there when metafilter is down. Ev would post there when blogger's down. One big site health site. (And a mirror in case the status site itself is down.)

Zowie!
Good thing, I'm working a night shift and slept late and missed it. If MeFi was down for a couple of hours I would've needed some methadone.

I had started to organize my favourites so I would have somewhere to go, and *boom she back*. They will stay messy for a while longer...and I thought I was only addicted to controlled substances.

Is Mefi a he or a she ? Has this ever come up?
posted by bittennails at 9:07 AM on April 12, 2002

Metafilter is an it - philtrum is neutral in Greek and Latin. Meta, of course, is an adverb or preposition so it has no gender. But if you still insist on sexing this little cherry of ours, bittennails, then I'd say it was a he as Metafilter becomes masculine in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and French(and Romanian too, probably). So: il metafiltro; o metafiltro; el metafiltro, le metafiltre. It's also masculine in German(filter).

So I'd definitely say "Bless MetaFilter and all who sail in her." Huh? ;)

Que es mas macho: Mefi or Fark?

Considering the way it has most of us tied up in knots, wrapped around its electronic fingers, and obsessed with its every move... I vote female.

"This vessel... I give, she takes. She won't let me live my life, I've got to live hers... Now I know why IT's called *she*... flesh... woman... to touch, to hold... beach to walk on, a few days... no braid on my shoulder... No beach to walk on..."

Goddamn I am STILL SUCH a geek!!!!!!!!!

But back to the topic - would it be at all possible for some fine and upstanding member to crack us open a page for the sole purpose of mutual support for MeFi addicts when the server's down? You know, just for reassurance? That would be nice. Slightly illicit but nice.

no, i don't think you guys get it. i looked for the metatalk pages of the5k (down; no guerilla mefi) and went to wholelottanothing (down; no 'announcements' about metafilter or anything) to see what i could see. i was composing an email to rusty, asking if he'd host some sort m4 refugee camp...and then it came back.

Now that is a higher power if I've ever seen one...

We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of kitties and porn...

I'm glad that it's back up. . .I neglected to get Matt to agree to any refunds when I sent in my money to him. . .

I don't want to get snotty here, Miguel, but isn't philtrum also that groove under the nose, that runs from septum to the upper lip?
